Genesis 13

1 So Abram came up out of Egypt he and his wife and all that he had and Lot with him, towards the South.

Et Abram remonta de l'Egypte, lui et sa femme et tout ce qu'il avait, et Lot avec lui, dans le Midi.

2 Now, Abram, was very rich, —in cattle, in silver and in gold.

Or Abram était fort riche en troupeaux, en argent et en or.

3 And he went his way, by his removals, from the South even as far as to Bethel, —as far as the place where his tent was at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai:

Et il s'avança par stations du Midi jusqu'à Béthel, au lieu où avait été sa tente dans l'origine, entre Béthel et Aï,

4 unto the place of the altar, which he made there at first, —and Abram called there, on the name of Yahweh.

à l'emplacement de l'autel qu'il avait fait au début. Et là Abram invoqua le nom de l'Éternel.

5 Now, Lot also, who was going with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents.

Et Lot aussi, qui voyageait avec Abram, avait des brebis et des bœufs et des tentes.

6 And the land suffered them not to dwell together, —because their substance had become, great, so that they could not dwell together.

Mais la contrée ne leur suffisait pas pour y demeurer ensemble; car leurs biens étaient considérables, et ils ne pouvaient demeurer réunis.

7 And there arose a strife betwixt the herdmen of Abram, and the herdmen of Lot. Now the Canaanite and the Perizzite, were then dwelling in the land.

Et il y eut rixe entre les bergers des troupeaux d'Abram et les bergers des troupeaux de Lot. Or les Cananéens et les Phérésiens étaient alors établis dans le pays.

8 So then Abram said unto Lot Pray let not cause of strife arise betwixt me and thee, or betwixt my herdmen and thy herdmen; for brethren, are we.

Et Abram dit à Lot: Il ne faut pas qu'il y ait de rixe entre moi et toi, et entre mes bergers et tes bergers; car nous sommes des frères!

9 Is not, all the land, before thee? I pray thee, separate thyself from me, —if to the left hand, then I will go to the right, if to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

N'as-tu pas tout le pays devant toi? Sépare-toi donc de moi! Prends-tu la gauche, je prendrai la droite, prends-tu la droite, je prendrai la gauche.

10 So Lot lifted up his eyes and beheld all the circuit of the Jordan, that the whole of it, was well-watered, —before Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the Garden of Yahweh, like the land of Egypt, as thou enterest into Zoar.

Alors Lot leva les yeux et distingua tout le cercle du Jourdain, qui dans sa totalité était arrosé, avant que l'Éternel eût détruit Sodome et Gomorrhe, comme un jardin de l'Éternel, comme la terre d'Egypte du côté de Tsohar.

11 And Lot chose for himself all the circuit of the Jordan, so Lot brake up eastwards, —and they separated themselves, each man from his brother:

Et Lot choisit pour lui tout le cercle du Jourdain et Lot se transporta à l'Orient; et ils se séparèrent l'un de l'autre.

12 Abram, fixed his dwelling in the land of Canaan, —but, Lot, fixed his dwelling among the cities, of the circuit, and moved his tent as far as Sodom.

Abram habita le pays de Canaan, et Lot habita les villes du cercle du Jourdain, et il dressa ses tentes jusqu'à Sodome.

13 Now, the men of Sodom were base and sinful, —against Yahweh, exceedingly.

Or les hommes de Sodome étaient méchants et excessivement pécheurs contre l'Éternel.

14 And, Yahweh, said unto Abram after that Lot had separated himself from him, Lift up, I pray thee thine eyes and look, from the place where thou art, —northward and southward and eastward and westward;

Et l'Éternel dit à Abram, après que Lot se fut séparé de lui: Lève donc les yeux, et du lieu où tu es, regarde au septentrion et au midi et à l'orient et à l'occident.

15 for all the land which thou art beholding—to thee, will I give it, and to thy seed unto times age-abiding;

Car tout le pays que tu vois, je veux te le donner, à toi et à ta postérité, pour l'éternité.

16 and I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth, —so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, thy seed also, may be numbered.

Et je rendrai ta postérité égale à la poussière de la terre, de telle sorte que s'il est possible de compter les grains de la poussière de la terre, ta postérité sera aussi comptée.

17 Rise! go up and down in the land, to the length thereof and to the breadth thereof, for to thee, will I give it.

Va et parcours le pays dans sa longueur et dans sa largeur, car je veux te le donner.

18 So Abram moved his tent and came in and dwelt among the oaks of Mamre, which were in Hebron, —and built there an altar to Yahweh.

Et Abram dressa ses tentes et fit son entrée et habita sous les chênes de Mamré, qui sont près de Hébron, et là il bâtit un autel à l'Éternel.
