Acts 16
1 And he came even unto Derbe, and unto Lystra; and lo! a certain disciple, was there, by name Timothy, son of a believing Jewish woman, but whose father was a Greek, —
Il arriva aussi à Derbé et à Lystres et y trouva un disciple appelé Timothée, fils d'une Juive devenue croyante, mais dont le père était Grec.
2 who was well-attested by the brethren in Lystra, and Iconium.
Les frères de Lystres et d'Iconium avaient bonne opinion de lui.
3 The same, would Paul have go forth with him, and took and circumcised him, on account of the Jews who were in those places; for they one and all knew that, his father, was, a Greek.
Paul voulut l'emmener avec lui; il le prit donc et le circoncit, à cause des Juifs de l'endroit; car tout le monde savait que son père était Grec.
4 And, as they passed through the cities, they were delivering unto them, for observance, the decrees which had been decided upon by the Apostles and Elders who were in Jerusalem.
Dans toutes les villes où ils passaient, ils faisaient connaître et recommandaient d'observer les décisions prises par les apôtres et les Anciens de Jérusalem.
5 The assemblies, therefore, were being confirmed in the faith, and increasing in number, every day.
C'est ainsi que la foi des Églises s'affermissait et que leur nombre augmentait tous les jours.
6 And they passed through the Phrygian and Galatian country, being forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia;
Ils traversèrent la Phrygie et le pays des Galates (le saint Esprit les avait empêchés de prêcher la Parole en Asie).
7 but, coming along Mysia, they were attempting to journey into Bithynia, —and, the Spirit of Jesus, suffered them not;
Arrivés du côté de la Mysie, ils se proposaient d'entrer en Bithynie, mais l'Esprit de Jésus ne le leur permit pas.
8 but, passing by Mysia, they came down unto Troas.
Ils traversèrent alors rapidement la Mysie et descendirent à Troas;
9 And, a vision, by night, unto Paul appeared: —A man of Macedonia, there was, standing and beseeching him, and saying—Come over into Macedonia, and bring us succour!
Paul y eut une vision pendant la nuit; un Macédonien se présentait à lui et lui disait en le suppliant: «Passe en Macédoine et viens à notre aide.»
10 Now, when, the vision, he had seen, straightway, we sought to go forth unto Macedonia, concluding that God, had summoned us to tell the glad tidings unto them.
Immédiatement après que cette vision lui eut apparu, nous cherchâmes à partir pour la Macédoine; nous comprenions que Dieu nous appelait à y prêcher l'Évangile.
11 Setting sail, therefore, from Troas, we ran straight into Samothracia, and, on the morrow, unto New City,
Embarqués à Troas, nous marchâmes, vent arrière, sur l'île de Samothrace; le lendemain sur Néapolis
12 and, from thence, unto Philippi, —which, indeed, is the first city of the part of Macedonia—a colony. And we were, in this city, spending certain days;
et, de là, nous nous rendîmes à Philippes, la première ville de la province de Macédoine et une colonie. Nous restâmes quelques jours dans cette ville.
13 and on the day of rest, we went forth outside the gate, beside a river, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, —and, sitting down, we went on to speak unto the women who had come together.
Le jour du sabbat nous sortîmes des portes et nous nous rendîmes au bord de la rivière, où nous supposions qu'on se réunissait pour la Prière. Nous prîmes notre place, et nous nous entretînmes avec les femmes qui y étaient rassemblées.
14 And, a certain woman, by name Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, devout towards God, was hearkening, whose heart, the Lord, fully opened, to be giving heed unto the things being spoken by Paul.
Il y en avait une appelée Lydie, marchande d'étoffes de pourpre de Thyatire, une prosélyte, qui nous écouta. Le Seigneur lui toucha le coeur, de sorte qu'elle fit attention à ce que disait Paul.
15 And, when she was immersed, and her house, she besought [us], saying—If ye have judged me to be a believer in the Lord, come into my house, and abide [there]. And she constrained us.
Quand elle eut été baptisée avec sa famille, elle nous invita en disant: «Si vous me croyez fidèle au Seigneur, entrez dans ma maison; demeurez-y; » et elle nous en pria instamment.
16 And it came to pass, as we were on our way unto the place of prayer, a certain damsel, having a spirit of Python, met us, —who, indeed, much gain, was presenting unto her masters, by divining.
Il arriva, comme nous allions à la Prière, qu'une esclave, possédée d'un Esprit devin, se présenta à nous. Elle faisait gagner beaucoup d'argent à ses maîtres en annonçant l'avenir.
17 The same, following after Paul and us, kept crying aloud, saying—These men, are servants of the Most High God, —who, indeed, are declaring unto you a way of salvation.
Elle se mit à nous suivre, Paul et nous. «Ces hommes-là, criait-elle, sont des serviteurs du Dieu suprême, ils vous annoncent le chemin du salut.»
18 And, this, she continued to do for many days. But Paul, worn out, and turning unto the spirit, said—I charge thee, in the name of Jesus Christ, to come out from her. And it came out the same hour.
Elle fit cela plusieurs jours; enfin Paul, impatienté, se retourna et dit à l'Esprit: «Je t'ordonne, au nom de Jésus-Christ, de sortir de cette femme.» A l'instant même, il sortit.
19 And, her masters, seeing that their hope of gain had gone out, laying hold on Paul and Silas, dragged them into the market-place, unto the rulers;
Cependant les maîtres de cette esclave, se voyant enlever le gain sur lequel ils comptaient, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, les traînèrent sur la place publique devant les magistrats
20 and, leading them forward unto the magistrates, said—These men, are exceedingly troubling our city, they, being Jews,
et les amenèrent aux préteurs. «Ces hommes-là, dirent-ils, troublent notre ville; ce sont des Juifs,
21 And are declaring customs, which it is not allowable for us either to accept or to observe, being Romans.
et ils prêchent des coutumes qu'il ne nous est permis ni d'accepter ni de suivre, puisque nous sommes Romains!»
22 And the multitude rose up together against them, and, the magistrates, rending off them their mantles, were giving orders to beat them with rods;
La populace se souleva aussi contre eux, et les préteurs leur firent arracher leurs vêtements et les condamnèrent à recevoir la bastonnade.
23 and, laying upon them many stripes, they thrust them into prison, charging the prison-keeper, safely, to be keeping them:
On les frappa cruellement, puis on les jeta en prison, et il fut recommandé au geôlier de les garder en lieu sûr.
24 who, a charge like this receiving, thrust them into the inner prison, and, their feet, made he fast in the stocks.
Celui-ci, pour obéir à cet ordre, les mit dans le cachot le plus reculé et engagea leurs pieds dans les ceps.
25 And, at midnight, Paul and Silas, being at prayer, began singing praise unto God; and the prisoners unto them, did hearken.
Vers le milieu de la nuit, Paul et Silas priaient, chantaient les louanges de Dieu, et les prisonniers les écoutaient,
26 And, suddenly, a great earthquake took place, —so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, and all the doors were [instantly] set open, and the bonds of all were unfastened.
quand tout à coup se produisit un tremblement de terre si violent que la prison fut ébranlée jusque dans ses fondements; toutes les portes s'ouvrirent instantanément, et les liens de tous les prisonniers se relâchèrent.
27 And, the prison-keeper, being wakened and seeing that the doors of the prison had been opened, drawing his sword, was about to kill himself, supposing the prisoners to have fled.
Le geôlier, réveillé en sursaut et voyant ouvertes les portes de la prison, tira son épée et voulut se donner la mort, croyant que les prisonniers s'étaient échappés.
28 But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying—By no means, do thyself harm, for we are, one and all, here.
Mais Paul lui parla: «Ne te fais point de mal, lui cria-t-il, nous sommes tous ici.»
29 And, asking for a light, he sprang in, and becoming, agitated, fell down unto Paul and Silas,
Alors le geôlier demanda de la lumière, entra précipitamment dans le cachot et se jeta tout tremblant aux pieds de Paul et de Silas;
30 and, leading them forth outside, said—Sirs! what must I be doing, that I may be saved?
puis il les fit sortir et leur dit: «Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé?»
31 And, they, said—Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou, and thy house.
Ils lui répondirent: «Crois au Seigneur Jésus et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta maison.»
32 And they spake unto him the word of God, with all who were in his house.
Et ils lui annoncèrent la Parole de Dieu, à lui et à tous ceux de sa famille.
33 And, taking them with him, in that hour of the night, he bathed them from their stripes, and was immersed, he, and his, one and all, on the spot;
Le geôlier les prenant avec lui à l'heure même, pendant la nuit, lava leurs plaies et se fit immédiatement baptiser, lui et tous les siens.
34 and, leading them up into his house, he set near a table, —and exulted, having, with all his house, believed in God.
Puis il les conduisit dans son logement et leur donna à manger; il était transporté de joie, et tous les siens l'étaient avec lui, d'avoir cru en Dieu.
35 And. when day came. the magistrates sent off the constables saying—Let those men go!
Le jour venu, les préteurs envoyèrent les licteurs dire au geôlier: «Relâche ces hommes!»
36 And the prison-keeper reported the words unto Paul—The magistrates have sent, that ye be let go. Now, therefore, going forth, be taking your journey in peace.
Le geôlier rapporta ces paroles à Paul: Les préteurs me font dire de vous relâcher; partez donc et allez en paix.»
37 But, Paul, said unto them—Beating us, in public, uncondemned, men that are Romans, they thrust us into prison; —and, now, by stealth, are they thrusting us forth? Nay, verily! but let them come, themselves, and lead us out!
Mais Paul répondit aux licteurs: «Ils nous ont fait frapper en public et sans jugement, nous, des citoyens romains, puis ils nous ont jetés en prison, et maintenant ils nous font sortir en cachette! Non, non, il faut qu'ils viennent eux-mêmes et nous raccompagnent!»
38 And the constables reported unto the magistrates these words; and they were struck with fear, when they heard that they were, Romans;
Les licteurs répétèrent ces paroles aux préteurs. Ceux-ci, apprenant qu'ils étaient romains, prirent peur;
39 and came, and besought them, and, leading them out, went on to request them to depart from the city.
ils vinrent les apaiser, les raccompagnèrent et les prièrent de quitter la ville.
40 And so, coming forth from the prison, they went unto Lydia, and, seeing the brethren, they comforted them, and went forth.
Quant à eux, à leur sortie de prison, ils se rendirent chez Lydie, ils y virent les frères, leur adressèrent quelques exhortations et partirent.
