Jeremiah 40

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah, which were carried away captive unto Babylon.

La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de Yahweh, après que Nabuzardan, chef des gardes, l’eut envoyé de Rama, l’ayant fait prendre quand il était lié de chaînes au milieu de tous les captifs de Jérusalem et de Juda qu’on déportait à Babylone.

2 And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, the LORD thy God pronounced this evil upon this place:

Le chef des gardes prit Jérémie et lui dit: « Yahweh, ton Dieu, avait annoncé ce malheur contre ce lieu,

3 and the LORD hath brought it, and done according as he spake; because ye have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.

et il l’a fait venir; et Yahweh a fait comme il avait dit; parce que vous avez péché contre Yahweh et que vous n’avez pas obéi à sa voix, cette chose vous est arrivée.

4 And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which are upon thine hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come, and I will look well unto thee: but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon, forbear: behold, all the land is before thee; whither it seemeth good and convenient unto thee to go, thither go.

Et maintenant, voici que je te délie aujourd’hui des chaînes que tu avais aux mains. S’il paraît bon à tes yeux de venir avec moi à Babylone, viens, et j’aurai mes yeux sur toi; mais s’il paraît mauvais à tes yeux de venir avec moi à Babylone, laisse cela. Regarde, tout le pays est devant toi; là où il paraîtra bon et convenable à tes yeux d’aller, vas-y. »

5 Now while he was not yet gone back, Go back then, [said he], to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a present, and let him go.

Comme Jérémie tardait à s’en aller: « Retourne, ajouta-t-il, vers Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, fils de Saphan, que le roi de Babylone a établi sur les villes de Juda, et demeure avec lui au milieu du peuple; ou bien va où il te plaira. » Et le chef des gardes lui donna des vivres et des présents, et le congédia.

6 Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

Et Jérémie se rendit auprès de Godolias à Maspha, et il demeura avec lui au milieu du peuple laissé dans le pays.

7 Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poorest of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon;

Lorsque tous les chefs de troupes qui étaient dans la campagne, eux et leurs hommes, eurent appris que le roi de Babylone avait établi Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, gouverneur du pays, et qu’il lui avait confié les hommes, les femmes et les enfants, et ceux des pauvres du pays qui n’étaient pas déportés à Babylone,

8 then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

ils vinrent vers Godolias, à Maspha, savoir: Ismaël, fils de Nathanias, Johanan et Jonathan, fils de Carée, Saraïas, fils de Tanéhumeth, les fils d’Ephoï, de Nétopha, et Jézonias, fils du Maahathien, eux et leurs hommes.

9 And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, fils de Saphan, leur dit avec serment, à eux et à leurs hommes: « Ne craignez pas de servir les Chaldéens; demeurez dans le pays, servez le roi de Babylone, et vous vous en trouverez bien.

10 As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans, which shall come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine and summer fruits and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.

Pour, moi, voici que je reste à Maspha pour être aux ordres des Chaldéens qui viendront vers vous. Et vous, faites la récolte du vin, des fruits et de l’huile; mettez-les dans vos vases, et habitez vos villes que vous occupez. »

11 Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan;

Tous les Judéens qui étaient dans le pays de Moab, chez les fils d’Ammon et dans Edom, et qui apprirent dans tous ces pays-là que le roi de Babylone avait laissé un reste à Juda, et qu’il leur avait donné pour gouverneur Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, fils de Saphan.

12 then all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.

Alors tous les Judéens revinrent de tous les lieux où ils avaient été chassés, et se rendirent au pays de Juda auprès de Godolias, à Maspha; et ils récoltèrent du vin et des fruits en abondance.

13 Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah,

Mais Johanan, fils de Carée, et tous les chefs des troupes qui étaient dans la campagne, vinrent trouver Godolias à Maspha,

14 and said unto him, Dost thou know that Baalis the king of the children of Ammon hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take thy life? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not.

et lui dirent: « Sais-tu que Baalis, roi des fils d’Ammon, a envoyé Ismaël, fils de Nathanias, pour t’ôter la vie? » Mais Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, ne les crut point.

15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore should he take thy life, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish?

Et Johanan, fils de Carée, parla en secret à Godolias à Maspha; en ces termes: « Que j’aille donc tuer Ismaël, fils de Nathanias, sans que personne le sache. Pourquoi t’ôterait-il la vie, et tous les Juifs qui se sont rassemblés vers toi seraient-ils dispersés, et le reste de Juda périrait-il? »

16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.

Godolias, fils d’Ahicam, dit à Johanan, fils de Carée: « Ne fais pas cela; car ce que tu dis au sujet d’Ismaël est faux. »
