Deuteronomy 4
1 And now, O Israel, hearken unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them; that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, giveth you.
Et maintenant, Israël, écoute les statuts et les lois que je vous inculque pour les observer, afin que vous viviez et parveniez à conquérir le pays que vous donne l'Éternel, Dieu de vos pères.
2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
Ne faites aux commandements que je vous donne, aucune addition, ni aucun retranchement, gardant les commandements de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, que je vous prescris.
3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baal-peor: for all the men that followed Baal-peor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from the midst of thee.
Vos yeux ont vu ce que l'Éternel a fait à l'occasion de Bahal-Pehor; car tous les hommes qui se firent les sectateurs de Bahal-Pehor, l'Éternel, ton Dieu, les extermina du milieu de toi,
4 But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.
tandis que vous qui êtes restés attachés à l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous êtes tous en vie aujourd'hui.
5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the midst of the land whither ye go in to possess it.
Voici, je vous ai enseigné des statuts et des lois, comme l'Éternel, mon Dieu, m'a ordonné, pour que vous vous y conformiez dans le pays dont vous venez faire la conquête.
6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
Gardez-les donc et pratiquez-les, car ce sera votre sagesse et votre intelligence aux yeux des peuples, qui entendront parler de tous ces statuts et diront: Il n'y a de peuple sage et intelligent que cette grande nation-là.
7 For what great nation is there, that hath a god so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is whensoever we call upon him?
Car quelle est la grande nation dont la Divinité soit aussi près, que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, l'est de nous, toutes les fois que nous l'invoquons?
8 And what great nation is there, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
Et quelle est la grande nation qui ait des statuts et des lois justes comme toute cette Loi que je vous propose en ce jour?
9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes saw, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life; but make them known unto thy children and thy children’s children;
Seulement prends garde à toi et veille bien sur toi-même pour ne pas oublier les choses que tes yeux ont vues, afin qu'elles ne sortent pas de ton cœur pendant toute la durée de ta vie; mais que tu les fasses connaître à tes fils et aux fils de tes fils,
10 the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Assemble me the people, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.
cette journée [surtout] où tu parus devant l'Éternel, ton Dieu, en Horeb, lorsque l'Éternel me dit: Assemble-moi ce peuple, afin que je leur fasse entendre mes Paroles qu'ils apprendront pour me craindre pendant toute la durée de leur vie sur la terre, et qu'ils enseigneront à leurs enfants.
11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the heart of heaven, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.
Alors vous vous êtes approchés et tenus debout au pied de la montagne, et la montagne était embrasée d'un feu qui s'élevait jusqu'au sein des Cieux, entre les ténèbres, les nuages et l'obscurité.
12 And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of words, but ye saw no form; only [ye heard] a voice.
Et du centre du feu l'Éternel vous parla; vous entendiez le son des paroles, mais vous ne vîtes aucune figure: il n'y avait qu'une voix.
13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even the ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.
Et Il vous promulgua son alliance qu'il vous ordonnait d'observer, les Dix Paroles, et Il les écrivit sur deux tables de pierre.
14 And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.
Et dans ce même temps l'Éternel m'ordonna de vous enseigner des statuts et des lois, pour que vous les pratiquiez dans le pays où vous allez passer pour en faire la conquête.
15 Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of form on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
Ainsi, veillez bien sur vous-mêmes, puisque vous ne vîtes aucune figure le jour où l'Éternel vous parla en Horeb du milieu du feu,
16 lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
afin de ne pas vous pervertir et de ne pas vous faire d'idole, image d'une figure quelconque, point d'effigie d'un mâle ou d'une femelle,
17 the likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the heaven,
d'effigie d'aucun animal terrestre, d'effigie d'aucun oiseau ailé qui vole dans le ciel,
18 the likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth:
d'effigie de rien qui rampe sur le sol, d'effigie d'aucun poisson habitant des eaux au-dessous de la terre;
19 and lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the host of heaven, thou be drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all the peoples under the whole heaven.
et afin de ne pas élever tes yeux vers le ciel pour te laisser entraîner par l'aspect du soleil, de la lune et des astres et de toute l'armée des Cieux à les adorer et à les servir, eux, que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, a donnés en partage à tous les peuples sous le ciel entier.
20 But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as at this day.
Car l'Éternel vous a pris et vous a retirés de la fournaise de fer, de l'Egypte, pour que vous fussiez son peuple particulier, comme [vous l'êtes] dans ce jour.
21 Furthermore the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, and sware that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:
Et l'Éternel se courrouça contre moi à cause de vous et jura que je ne passerai point le Jourdain et n'entrerai point dans le beau pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en propriété;
22 but I must die in this land, I must not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess that good land.
car je dois mourir dans ce pays-ci et ne passerai point le Jourdain; mais vous, vous le passerez, et vous ferez la conquête de cet excellent pays.
23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image in the form of any thing which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.
Veillez sur vous afin de ne pas oublier l'alliance de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, qu'il a conclue avec vous, et de ne vous faire aucune idole, aucune effigie de rien de ce que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, t'a interdit.
24 For the LORD thy God is a devouring fire, a jealous God.
Car l'Éternel, ton Dieu, est un feu dévorant, un Dieu jaloux.
25 When thou shalt beget children, and children’s children, and ye shall have been long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image in the form of any thing, and shall do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger:
Lorsque vous aurez eu des enfants et des petits-enfants et que vous serez établis dans le pays, si vous vous corrompez, si vous vous fabriquez quelque image ou une effigie quelconque, et faites ainsi ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, pour le provoquer,
26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.
je prends aujourd'hui à témoin contre vous les Cieux et la terre que vous serez bientôt exterminés du pays dont, après le passage du Jourdain, vous ferez la conquête; vous n'y passerez pas de longs jours, mais vous serez détruits, exterminés.
27 And the LORD shall scatter you among the peoples, and ye shall be left few in number among the nations, whither the LORD shall lead you away.
Et l'Éternel vous disséminera parmi les peuples et vous survivrez en petit nombre au milieu des nations où l'Éternel vous emmènera;
28 And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
et là, vous servirez des dieux, ouvrage des mains de l'homme, le bois et la pierre, qui ne voient, ni n'entendent, ni ne mangent, ni n'odorent.
29 But if from thence ye shall seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou search after him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.
Mais de là tu chercheras l'Éternel, ton Dieu, et tu le trouveras si tu le cherches de tout ton cœur et de toute ton âme.
30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, in the latter days thou shalt return to the LORD thy God, and hearken unto his voice:
Dans ta détresse et lorsque toutes ces choses t'atteindront dans la suite des temps, tu reviendras à l'Éternel, ton Dieu, et tu écouteras sa voix.
31 for the LORD thy God is a merciful God; he will not fail thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.
Car c'est un Dieu miséricordieux, que l'Éternel, ton Dieu; Il ne te laissera pas, ne te perdra pas, et n'oubliera pas l'alliance de tes pères, qu'il leur a jurée.
32 For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and from the one end of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been [any such thing] as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?
Hé! demande en effet aux temps primitifs qui t'ont précédé, depuis le jour où Dieu créa des hommes sur la terre, et d'une extrémité du ciel à l'autre, si jamais advint si grande chose, ou s'il en a été entendu une pareille,
33 Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?
si jamais peuple ouït la voix d'un Dieu parlant du milieu du feu, comme tu l'as ouïe, et en demeurant en vie!
34 Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of [another] nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
ou si jamais un Dieu tenta de venir se choisir une nation au sein d'une autre, par des épreuves, des signes et des prodiges, et la guerre, et d'une main forte et d'un bras étendu, et par des exploits grands et terribles, comme tout ce qu'a fait pour vous l'Éternel, votre Dieu, en Egypte devant vos yeux.
35 Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.
Tu en as été rendu spectateur pour reconnaître que l'Éternel est Dieu et que hors lui il n'en est point.
36 Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he made thee to see his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire.
Des Cieux Il t'a fait entendre sa voix pour t'instruire, et sur la terre Il t'a fait voir son feu majestueux, et c'est du feu que tu entendis sortir ses paroles.
37 And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt;
Et parce qu'il aima tes pères et qu'il fit choix de leur race après eux, en personne et par sa grande vertu Il te fit sortir de l'Egypte
38 to drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as at this day.
pour chasser devant toi des nations grandes et fortes plus que toi, pour t'amener, pour te donner leur pays en propriété, comme [il arrive] aujourd'hui.
39 Know therefore this day, and lay it to thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.
Reconnais donc maintenant et mets-le dans ton cœur, que l'Éternel est Dieu, en haut dans les Cieux, et en bas sur la terre, qu'il n'en est pas d'autre.
40 And thou shalt keep his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever.
Et garde ses statuts et ses commandements que je te prescris en ce jour, afin que tu sois heureux toi et tes fils après toi, et que tu passes de longs jours dans le pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne pour toujours.
41 Then Moses separated three cities beyond Jordan toward the sunrising;
Alors Moïse sépara trois villes au delà du Jourdain vers le soleil levant,
42 that the manslayer might flee thither, which slayeth his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in time past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:
dans lesquelles pût se réfugier l'homicide qui aurait tué son prochain sans intention, et sans avoir été son ennemi ni d'hier ni d'avant-hier, afin qu'il pût se réfugier dans l'une de ces villes, et conserver la vie,
43 [namely], Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, for the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.
Betser, dans le désert, dans la contrée de la plaine pour les Rubénites, et Ramoth en Galaad pour les Gadites, et Golan en Basan pour les Manassites.
44 And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel:
Et voici la Loi que Moïse présenta aux enfants d'Israël,
45 these are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses spake unto the children of Israel, when they came forth out of Egypt;
voici les ordonnances, les statuts et les lois que Moïse adressa aux enfants d'Israël à leur sortie de l'Egypte,
46 beyond Jordan, in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, when they came forth out of Egypt:
au delà du Jourdain, dans la vallée, vis-à-vis de Beth-Pehor, dans le pays de Sihon, Roi des Amoréens qui résidait à Hesbon, que battirent Moïse et les enfants d'Israël à leur sortie de l'Egypte.
47 and they took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, which were beyond Jordan toward the sunrising;
Et ils conquirent son pays et le pays de Og, Roi de Basan, des deux rois des Amoréens au delà du Jourdain, au soleil levant,
48 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, even unto mount Sion (the same is Hermon),
depuis Aroër située sur la rive du torrent de l'Arnon, jusqu'au mont Sijon qui est l'Hermon,
49 and all the Arabah beyond Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.
et toute la plaine au delà du Jourdain à l'orient et jusqu'à la mer de la plaine au pied du Pisga.
