Ruth 4
1 Then Boaz went up to the gate and sat down. Just then the near kinsman of whom Boaz had spoken came along. Boaz said, ‘Hello, So-and-so (calling him by name), come here and sit down.’ So he stopped and sat down.
ボアズは町の門のところへ上っていって、そこにすわった。すると、さきにボアズが言った親戚の人が通り過ぎようとしたので、ボアズはその人に言った、「友よ、こちらへきて、ここにおすわりください」。彼はきてすわった。
2 Boaz also took ten of the town elders and said, ‘Sit down here.’ So they sat down.
ボアズはまた町の長老十人を招いて言った、「ここにおすわりください」。彼らがすわった時、
3 Then he said to the near relative, ‘Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is offering for sale the piece of land which belonged to our relative Elimelech,
ボアズは親戚の人に言った、「モアブの地から帰ってきたナオミは、われわれの親族エリメレクの地所を売ろうとしています。
4 and I thought that I would lay the matter before you, suggesting that you buy it in the presence of these men who sit here and of the elders of my people. If you will buy it and so keep it in the possession of the family, do so; but if not; then tell me, so that I may know; for no one but you has the right to buy it, and I am next to you.’ ‘I will buy it,’ he said.
それでわたしはそのことをあなたに知らせて、ここにすわっている人々と、民の長老たちの前で、それを買いなさいと、あなたに言おうと思いました。もし、あなたが、それをあがなおうと思われるならば、あがなってください。しかし、あなたがそれをあがなわないならば、わたしにそう言って知らせてください。それをあがなう人は、あなたのほかにはなく、わたしはあなたの次ですから」。彼は言った、「わたしがあがないましょう」。
5 Then Boaz said, ‘On the day you buy the field from Naomi, you must also marry Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order to preserve the name of the dead in connection with his inheritance.’
そこでボアズは言った、「あなたがナオミの手からその地所を買う時には、死んだ者の妻であったモアブの女ルツをも買って、死んだ者の名を起してその嗣業を伝えなければなりません」。
6 ‘I cannot buy it for myself without spoiling my own inheritance,’ the near relative said. ‘You take my right of buying it as a relative, because I cannot do so.’
その親戚の人は言った、「それでは、わたしにはあがなうことができません。そんなことをすれば自分の嗣業をそこないます。あなたがわたしに代って、自分であがなってください。わたしはあがなうことができませんから」。
7 Now this used to be the custom in Israel: to make valid anything relating to a matter of redemption or exchange, a man drew off his sandal and gave it to the other man; and this was the way contracts were attested in Israel.
むかしイスラエルでは、物をあがなう事と、権利の譲渡について、万事を決定する時のならわしはこうであった。すなわち、その人は、自分のくつを脱いで、相手の人に渡した。これがイスラエルでの証明の方法であった。
8 So when the near relative said to Boaz, ‘Buy it for yourself,’ Boaz drew off the man’s sandal.
そこで親戚の人がボアズにむかい「あなたが自分であがないなさい」と言って、そのくつを脱いだので、
9 Then Boaz said to the elders and to all the people, ‘You are witnesses at this time that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s from Naomi.
ボアズは長老たちとすべての民に言った、「あなたがたは、きょう、わたしがエリメレクのすべての物およびキリオンとマロンのすべての物をナオミの手から買いとった事の証人です。
10 Moreover I have secured Ruth the Moabite, the wife of Mahlon, to be my wife, in order to perpetuate the name of the dead in connection with his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his relatives and from the household where he lived. You are witnesses this day.’
またわたしはマロンの妻であったモアブの女ルツをも買って、わたしの妻としました。これはあの死んだ者の名を起してその嗣業を伝え、死んだ者の名がその一族から、またその郷里の門から断絶しないようにするためです。きょうあなたがたは、その証人です」。
11 Then all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, ‘We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your house like Rachel and Leah, who together built the house of Israel. May you do well in Ephrata, and become famous in Bethlehem.
すると門にいたすべての民と長老たちは言った、「わたしたちは証人です。どうぞ、主があなたの家にはいる女を、イスラエルの家をたてたラケルとレアのふたりのようにされますよう。どうぞ、あなたがエフラタで富を得、ベツレヘムで名を揚げられますように。
12 From the children whom the Lord will give you by this young woman may your household become like the household of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.’
どうぞ、主がこの若い女によってあなたに賜わる子供により、あなたの家が、かのタマルがユダに産んだペレヅの家のようになりますように」。
13 So Boaz married Ruth, and she became his wife; and the Lord gave to her a son.
こうしてボアズはルツをめとって妻とし、彼女のところにはいった。主は彼女をみごもらせられたので、彼女はひとりの男の子を産んだ。
14 Then the women said to Naomi, ‘Blessed be the Lord who has not left you at this time without a near relative, and may his name be famous in Israel.
そのとき、女たちはナオミに言った、「主はほむべきかな、主はあなたを見捨てずに、きょう、あなたにひとりの近親をお授けになりました。どうぞ、その子の名がイスラエルのうちに高く揚げられますように。
15 This child will restore your vigor and nourish you in your old age; for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is worth more to you than seven sons, has borne a son to Boaz!’
彼はあなたのいのちを新たにし、あなたの老年を養う者となるでしょう。あなたを愛するあなたの嫁、七人のむすこにもまさる彼女が彼を産んだのですから」。
16 So Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him as if he was her own.
そこでナオミはその子をとり、ふところに置いて、養い育てた。
17 The women of the neighbourhood gave him a name, saying, ‘A son is born to Naomi!’ They named him Obed. He became the father of Jesse, who was the father of David.
近所の女たちは「ナオミに男の子が生れた」と言って、彼に名をつけ、その名をオベデと呼んだ。彼はダビデの父であるエッサイの父となった。
18 This is the genealogy of Perez: Perez was the father of Hezron,
さてペレヅの子孫は次のとおりである。ペレヅからヘヅロンが生れ、
19 Hezron of Ram, Ram of Amminadab,
ヘヅロンからラムが生れ、ラムからアミナダブが生れ、
20 Amminidab of Nashon, Nashon of Salmon,
アミナダブからナションが生れ、ナションからサルモンが生れ、
21 Salmon of Boaz, Boaz of Obed,
サルモンからボアズが生れ、ボアズからオベデが生れ、
22 Obed of Jesse, Jesse of David.
オベデからエッサイが生れ、エッサイからダビデが生れた。
