< Psalms 124 >

1 A song of ascents. Of David. ‘Had it not been the Lord who was for us’ let Israel say
Canticum graduum. Nisi quia Dominus erat in nobis, dicat nunc Israël,
2 ‘Had it not been the Lord who was for us when enemies rose against us,
nisi quia Dominus erat in nobis: cum exsurgerent homines in nos,
3 then alive they’d have swallowed us up, when their anger was kindled against us.
forte vivos deglutissent nos; cum irasceretur furor eorum in nos,
4 Then the waters would’ve swept us away, and the torrent passed over us clean:
forsitan aqua absorbuisset nos;
5 then most sure would’ve passed over us clean the wild seething waters.’
torrentem pertransivit anima nostra; forsitan pertransisset anima nostra aquam intolerabilem.
6 Blest be the Lord who has given us not to be torn by their teeth.
Benedictus Dominus, qui non dedit nos in captionem dentibus eorum.
7 We are like a bird just escaped from the snare of the fowler. The snare is broken, and we are escaped.
Anima nostra sicut passer erepta est de laqueo venantium; laqueus contritus est, et nos liberati sumus.
8 Our help is the name of the Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth.
Adjutorium nostrum in nomine Domini, qui fecit cælum et terram.
