Matthew 3
1 About that time John the Baptist first appeared, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea:
E, naqueles dias, apareceu João Batista pregando no deserto da Judeia,
2 ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
E dizendo: Arrependei-vos, porque é chegado o reino dos céus;
3 John was the one who was spoken of in the prophet Isaiah, where he says – “The voice of one crying aloud in the wilderness: ‘Make ready the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’”
Porque é este o anunciado pelo profeta Isaias, que disse: Voz do que clama no deserto: preparai o caminho do Senhor, endireitai as suas veredas.
4 John’s clothes were made of camels’ hair, with a leather strap round his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
E este João tinha o seu vestido de pelos de camelo, e um cinto de couro em torno de seus lombos; e alimentava-se de gafanhotos e mel silvestre.
5 At that time Jerusalem, and all Judea, as well as the whole district of the Jordan, went out to him
Então ia ter com ele Jerusalém, e toda a Judeia, e toda a província adjacente ao Jordão,
6 and were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
E eram por ele batizados no rio Jordão, confessando os seus pecados.
7 But when John saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to receive his baptism, he said to them, ‘You children of snakes! Who has prompted you to seek refuge from the coming judgment?
E, vendo ele muitos dos fariseus e dos saduceus, que vinham ao seu batismo, dizia-lhes: Raça de víboras, quem vos ensinou a fugir da ira futura?
8 Let your life, then, prove your repentance;
Produzi pois frutos dignos de arrependimento;
9 and do not think that you can say among yourselves “Abraham is our ancestor,” for I tell you that out of these stones God is able to raise descendants for Abraham!
E não presumais de vós mesmos, dizendo: Temos por pai a Abraão; porque eu vos digo que mesmo destas pedras Deus pode suscitar filhos a Abraão.
10 Already the axe is lying at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that fails to bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
E também agora está posto o machado à raiz das árvores; toda a árvore, pois, que não produz bom fruto, é cortada e lançada no fogo
11 I, indeed, baptize you with water to teach repentance; but he who is coming after me is more powerful than I, and I am not fit even to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
E eu, em verdade, vos batizo com água, para o arrependimento; mas aquele que vem após mim, é mais poderoso do que eu; cujas alparcas não sou digno de levar; ele vos batizará com o Espírito Santo, e com fogo.
12 His winnowing-fan is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor, and store his grain in the barn, but the chaff he will burn with a fire that cannot be put out.’
Em sua mão tem a pá, e limpará a sua eira, e recolherá no celeiro o seu trigo, e queimará a palha com fogo que nunca se apagará.
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him.
Então veio Jesus da Galiléia a João, junto do Jordão, para ser batizado por ele,
14 But John tried to prevent him. ‘I need to be baptized by you,’ he said, ‘so why have you come to me?’
João opunha-se-lhe, porém, dizendo: Eu careço de ser batizado por ti, e vens tu a mim?
15 ‘This is the way it should be for now,’ Jesus answered, ‘because we should do everything that God requires.’ So John agreed.
Jesus, porém, respondendo, disse-lhe: Deixa por agora, porque assim nos convém cumprir toda a justiça. Então ele o deixou.
16 After the baptism of Jesus, and just as he came up from the water, the heavens opened, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and resting on him,
E, sendo Jesus batizado, saiu logo da água, e eis que se lhe abriram os céus, e viu o espírito de Deus descendo como pomba e vindo sobre ele.
17 and from the heavens there came a voice which said, ‘This is my dearly loved son, who brings me great joy.’
E eis que uma voz dos céus dizia: Este é o meu Filho amado, em quem me comprazo.
