Esther 8

1 At that time King Ahasuerus gave the property of Haman the Jews’ enemy to Queen Esther. Mordecai was made one of the king’s personal advisers, for Esther had disclosed his relationship to her.

El mismo día dio el rey Asuero a la reina Ester la casa de Amán enemigo de los Judíos: y Mardoqueo vino delante del rey; porque Ester le declaró el parentesco que él tenía con ella.

2 The king also drew off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman. He gave it to Mordecai, and Esther placed Mordecai in charge of Haman’s property.

Y quitó el rey su anillo que había vuelto a tomar de Amán, y diólo a Mardoqueo: y Ester puso a Mardoqueo sobre la casa de Amán.

3 Then Esther sought another audience with the king and fell at his feet and with tears begged him to avert the evil planned by Haman the Agagite and to frustrate his designs against the Jews.

Y volvió Ester, y habló delante del rey, y echóse a sus pies llorando, y rogándole que anulase la maldad de Amán Agageo, y su pensamiento que había pensado contra los Judíos.

4 The king held out to her the golden sceptre, and she arose and stood before him.

Y extendió el rey a Ester la vara de oro, y Ester se levantó, y se puso en pie delante del rey,

5 ‘If it seems best to the king,’ she said, ‘and if I have won his favour and he thinks it right, and if I please him, let written orders be given to revoke the dispatches devised by Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote ordering the destruction of the Jews who are in all the king’s provinces.

Y dijo: Si place al rey, y si he hallado gracia delante de él, y si la cosa es recta delante del rey, y si yo soy buena en sus ojos, sea escrito para revocar las cartas del pensamiento de Amán, hijo de Amadata Agageo, que escribió para destruir a los Judíos, que están en todas las provincias del rey.

6 For how can I bear to look upon the evil that will come to my people? How can I bear to see their destruction?’

Porque ¿cómo podré yo ver el mal que hallará a mi pueblo? ¿cómo podré yo ver la destrucción de mi nación?

7 Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, ‘See, I have given Esther the property of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows, because he laid hands upon the Jews.

Y respondió el rey Asuero a la reina Ester, y a Mardoqueo Judío: He aquí, yo di a Ester la casa de Amán, y a él colgaron en la horca, por cuanto extendió su mano contra los Judíos.

8 Now you write on behalf of the Jews, as seems best to you, in the king’s name and seal it with the king’s signet ring. For a document that is written in the king’s name and sealed with the king’s signet ring cannot be revoked.’

Escribíd pues vosotros a los Judíos como bien os pareciere, en nombre del rey, y selládlo con el anillo del rey: porque la escritura que se escribe en nombre del rey, y se sella con el anillo del rey, no es para revocarla.

9 On the twenty-third day of the third month (that is the month of Sivan), the king’s secretaries were summoned and as Mordecai instructed an edict was issued to the Jews, to the satraps and provincial governors and the rulers of each of the one hundred twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia in their own script and their own language, and to the Jews in their own script and language.

Entonces fueron llamados los escribanos del rey en el mes tercero que es Siván, a los veinte y tres del mismo, y fue escrito, conforme a todo lo que mandó Mardoqueo, a los Judíos, y a los sátrapas, y a los capitanes, y a los príncipes de las provincias, que son desde la India hasta la Etiopía, ciento y veinte y siete provincias, a cada provincia según su escritura, y a cada pueblo conforme a su lengua, y a los Judíos conforme a su escritura y lengua.

10 Mordecai wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus. He sealed it with the king’s signet ring. Dispatches were sent by mounted couriers who rode the swift, noble steeds, bred of the royal studs.

Y escribió en nombre del rey Asuero, y selló con el anillo del rey, y envió las cartas por mano de correos de caballo, caballeros en mulos, en mulos hijos de yeguas:

11 In this way the king permitted the Jews who were in every city to gather together and make a stand for their life, to destroy, to kill, and annihilate all the armed forces of any people or province that might be hostile to them, including their children and women, and to take their goods as plunder

Que el rey daba a los Judíos que estaban en todas las ciudades, y en cada una de ellas, que se juntasen, y se pusiesen en defensa de su vida; que destruyesen, y matasen, y deshiciesen todo ejército de pueblo o provincia que viniese contra ellos, niños y mujeres, y que los saqueasen,

12 throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus on that thirteenth day of the twelfth month (which is called Adar).

En un mismo día en todas las provincias del rey Asuero: a los trece del mes doceno, que es el mes de Adar.

13 A copy of the edict was to be published as a decree in every province – publicly displayed so that the Jews might be ready for that day and avenge themselves.

La copia de la escritura era que se diese ley en cada provincia: Que fuese manifiesto a todos los pueblos, que los Judíos estuviesen apercebidos para aquel día, para vengarse de sus enemigos.

14 So the couriers who rode the swift, noble steeds went out, hastened and impelled by the king’s commands! Meantime the decree had been given out in the royal palace at Susa;

Los correos cabalgando en mulos, en mulos salieron apresurados, y constreñidos por el mandamiento del rey: y la ley fue dada en Susán la cabecera del reino.

15 and Mordecai had gone out from the presence of the king in royal garments of violet and white and with a great crown of gold and with a robe of fine linen and purple. The people of Susa shouted and were glad.

Y salió Mardoqueo de delante del rey con vestido real de cárdeno y blanco, y una gran corona de oro, y un manto de lino y púrpura: y la ciudad de Susán se alegró y regocijó.

16 To the Jews there came light and gladness and joy and honour.

Los Judíos tuvieron luz, y alegría, y gozo, y honra.

17 And in every province and city, wherever the king’s command and decree came, there was gladness and joy among the Jews and a holiday. Many of the peoples of the earth professed to be Jews, for fear of the Jews took possession of them.

Y en cada provincia, y en cada ciudad, donde llegó el mandamiento del rey, los Judíos tuvieron alegría y gozo, banquete y día de placer: y muchos de los pueblos de la tierra se hacían Judíos, porque el temor de los Judíos había caído sobre ellos.
