Esther 2

1 Some time later, when the wrath of King Ahasuerus had subsided, he remembered what Vashti had done and what had been decreed against her.

Pasadas estas cosas, reposada ya la ira del rey Asuero, acordóse de Vasti, y de lo que hizo, y de lo que fue sentenciado sobre ella.

2 Then the king’s servants who waited upon him said, ‘Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king,

Y dijeron los criados del rey, sus oficiales: Busquen al rey mozas vírgenes de buen parecer.

3 and let the king appoint commissioners to all the provinces of his kingdom to gather them all to Susa the royal residence. Let them be brought into the women’s quarters under the custody of Hegai, the king’s eunuch, who has charge of the women. Then give them what is needed to make them beautiful,

Y ponga el rey personas en todas las provincias de su reino, que junten todas las mozas vírgenes de buen parecer en Susán la cabecera del reino, en la casa de las mujeres, en poder de Egeo eunuco del rey, guarda de las mujeres, dándoles sus atavíos.

4 and let the girl who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.’ The proposal pleased the king so he put it into action.

Y la moza que agradare a los ojos del rey, reine en lugar de Vasti. Y la cosa plugo en ojos del rey, e hízolo así.

5 In Susa the royal residence lived a Jew named Mordecai. He was son of Jair, son of Shimei, son of Kish, a Benjamite.

Había un varón Judío en Susán la cabecera del reino, cuyo nombre era Mardoqueo, hijo de Jair, hijo de Semeí, hijo de Cis, del linaje de Jemini,

6 (Kish had been carried away from Jerusalem with the exiles who were deported with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon took captive.)

Que había sido traspasado de Jerusalem con los cautivos que fueron traspasados con Jeconías rey de Judá, que hizo traspasar Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia.

7 Mordecai had adopted Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter, since she had neither father nor mother. The girl was shapely and beautiful; and after her father and mother died, Mordecai raised her as if she was his own daughter.

Y había criado a Edisa, que es Ester, hija de su tio, porque no tenía padre ni madre, y era moza hermosa de forma y de buen parecer: y como su padre y su madre murieron, Mardoqueo se la había tomado por hija.

8 When the king’s command and decree were known, many girls were gathered together to Susa the capital under the custody of Hegai. Esther was also taken into the king’s palace and placed under the custody of Hegai, who had charge of the women.

Y fue, que como se divulgó el mandamiento del rey y su ley, y siendo juntadas muchas mozas en Susán la cabecera del reino en poder de Egeo, fue tomada Ester para casa del rey, al cargo de Egeo guarda de las mujeres.

9 The girl pleased him and gained his favour, so that he quickly gave her the cosmetics she needed to enhance her beauty and her allowance of food and the seven maids selected from the king’s household. He also transferred her and her maids to the best place in the harem.

Y aquella moza agradó en sus ojos, y hubo gracia delante de él, e hizo apresurar sus atavíos, y sus raciones para darle; y siete mozas convenientes de la casa del rey para darle: y pasóla con sus mozas a lo mejor de la casa de las mujeres.

10 Esther had not revealed her people nor her family background because Mordecai had ordered her not to.

Ester no declaró su pueblo, ni su nacimiento, porque Mardoqueo le había mandado, que no lo declarase.

11 Every day Mordecai would to walk in front of the courtyard of the harem and ask after Esther’s health and what was happening to her.

Y cada día Mardoqueo se paseaba delante del patio de la casa de las mujeres, por saber cómo iba a Ester, y qué se hacía de ella.

12 The girls were prepared for meeting King Ahasuerus for twelve months: six months being treated with oil of myrrh and six months with perfumes and cosmetics. After the twelve months,

Y como venía el tiempo de cada una de las mozas para venir al rey Asuero, al cabo que tenía ya doce meses según la ley de las mujeres, porque así se cumplía el tiempo de sus atavíos, seis meses con óleo de mirra, y seis meses con cosas aromáticas y afeites de mujeres;

13 each girl went in to the king. She was allowed to take with her whatever she wished from the women’s quarters,

Y con esto la moza venía al rey: todo lo que ella decía, se le daba, para venir con ello de la casa de las mujeres hasta la casa del rey.

14 and would enter the palace in the evening and return the next morning to another part of the harem under the care of the king’s eunuch Shaashgaz who was in charge of concubines. She would not go to the king again unless he desired her and summoned her by name.

Ella venía a la tarde, y a la mañana se volvía a la casa segunda de las mujeres al cargo de Saasgaz eunuco del rey, guarda de las concubinas: no venía más al rey, salvo si el rey la quería: entonces era llamada por nombre.

15 When it was the turn of Esther (the girl adopted by Mordecai, daughter of his uncle Abihail) to go in to the king, she only took with her those things that Hegai, the king’s eunuch in charge of the women, had advised her to take. Esther was liked by all who saw her.

Y como se llegó el tiempo de Ester, hija de Abihail, tio de Mardoqueo, que él se había tomado por hija, para venir al rey, ninguna cosa procuró, sino lo que dijo Egeo eunuco del rey, guarda de las mujeres: y ganaba Ester la gracia de todos los que la veían.

16 Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus in the royal palace in the tenth month, the month of Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

Y fue Ester llevada al rey Asuero a su casa real en el mes décimo, que es el mes de Tebet, en el año séptimo de su reino.

17 And the king loved her more than all the other women, and she became his favourite and won his affection. He placed the royal diadem on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.

Y el rey amó a Ester sobre todas las mujeres, y tuvo gracia y misericordia delante de él más que todas las vírgenes: y puso la corona del reino en su cabeza, e hízola reina en lugar de Vasti.

18 Then the king gave a great feast to all his officials and courtiers in honour of Esther, and he remitted the taxes of the provinces and distributed gifts with royal liberality.

E hizo el rey gran banquete a todos sus príncipes y siervos, el banquete de Ester: e hizo relajación a las provincias; e hizo y dio mercedes conforme a la facultad real.

19 All the time the virgins were assembled again, Mordecai was sitting as an offical at the king’s gate.

Y cuando eran juntadas las vírgenes la segunda vez, Mardoqueo estaba asentado a la puerta del rey.

20 Esther had not revealed her people or family background because she still obeyed him as she had when he was bringing her up.

Y Ester nunca declaró su nación ni su pueblo, como Mardoqueo le mandó: porque Ester hacía lo que decía Mardoqueo, como cuando estaba en crianza con él.

21 In those days while Mordecai was sitting in the king’s gate, two of the royal court attendants, Bigthan and Teresh, who guarded the entrance of the palace, became enraged and attempted to kill King Ahasuerus.

En aquellos días, estando Mardoqueo asentado a la puerta del rey, enojáronse Bagatán y Tares, dos eunucos del rey, de la guarda de la puerta, y procuraban poner mano en el rey Asuero.

22 But Mordecai learned of the conspiracy and disclosed it to Queen Esther, and she told the king on Mordecai’s behalf.

Y la cosa fue entendida de Mardoqueo, y él lo denunció a la reina Ester, y Ester lo dijo al rey en nombre de Mardoqueo.

23 When the affair was investigated and the facts discovered, the conspirators were both hanged on the gallows. The incident was recorded in the presence of the king in the daily record of events.

Y fue inquirida la cosa, y fue hallada; y ambos ellos fueron colgados en la horca: y fue escrito en el libro de las cosas de los tiempos delante del rey.
