Acts 16
1 Among other places Paul went to Derbe and Lystra. At the latter place they found a disciple, named Timothy, whose mother was a Jewish woman who was a believer, while his father was a Greek,
Il arriva aussi à Derbé et à Lystres et y trouva un disciple appelé Timothée, fils d'une Juive devenue croyante, mais dont le père était Grec.
2 and who was well spoken of by the followers of the Lord in Lystra and Iconium.
Les frères de Lystres et d'Iconium avaient bonne opinion de lui.
3 Wishing to take this man with him on his journey, Paul caused him to be circumcised out of consideration for the Jews in that region, for they all knew that his father had been a Greek.
Paul voulut l'emmener avec lui; il le prit donc et le circoncit, à cause des Juifs de l'endroit; car tout le monde savait que son père était Grec.
4 As they traveled from town to town, they gave the followers the decisions which had been reached by the apostles and church elders at Jerusalem, for them to observe.
Dans toutes les villes où ils passaient, ils faisaient connaître et recommandaient d'observer les décisions prises par les apôtres et les Anciens de Jérusalem.
5 So the churches grew stronger in the faith, and increased in numbers from day to day.
C'est ainsi que la foi des Églises s'affermissait et que leur nombre augmentait tous les jours.
6 They next went through the Phrygian district of Galatia, but were restrained by the Holy Spirit from delivering the message in Roman Asia.
Ils traversèrent la Phrygie et le pays des Galates (le saint Esprit les avait empêchés de prêcher la Parole en Asie).
7 When they reached the borders of Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them.
Arrivés du côté de la Mysie, ils se proposaient d'entrer en Bithynie, mais l'Esprit de Jésus ne le leur permit pas.
8 Passing through Mysia, they went down to Troas;
Ils traversèrent alors rapidement la Mysie et descendirent à Troas;
9 and there one night Paul saw a vision. A Macedonian was standing and appealing to him – “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”
Paul y eut une vision pendant la nuit; un Macédonien se présentait à lui et lui disait en le suppliant: «Passe en Macédoine et viens à notre aide.»
10 So, immediately after Paul had seen the vision, we looked for an opportunity to cross over to Macedonia, concluding that God had summoned us to tell the good news to the people there.
Immédiatement après que cette vision lui eut apparu, nous cherchâmes à partir pour la Macédoine; nous comprenions que Dieu nous appelait à y prêcher l'Évangile.
11 Accordingly we set sail from Troas, and ran before the wind to Samothrace, reaching Neapolis the next day.
Embarqués à Troas, nous marchâmes, vent arrière, sur l'île de Samothrace; le lendemain sur Néapolis
12 From there we made our way to Philippi, which is the principal city of that part of Macedonia, and also a Roman Settlement. In that city we spent several days.
et, de là, nous nous rendîmes à Philippes, la première ville de la province de Macédoine et une colonie. Nous restâmes quelques jours dans cette ville.
13 On the Sabbath we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there would be a place of prayer; and we sat down and talked to the women who were gathered there.
Le jour du sabbat nous sortîmes des portes et nous nous rendîmes au bord de la rivière, où nous supposions qu'on se réunissait pour la Prière. Nous prîmes notre place, et nous nous entretînmes avec les femmes qui y étaient rassemblées.
14 Among them was a woman, named Lydia, belonging to Thyatira, a dealer in purple cloth, who was accustomed to join in the worship of God. The Lord touched this woman’s heart, so that she gave attention to the message delivered by Paul,
Il y en avait une appelée Lydie, marchande d'étoffes de pourpre de Thyatire, une prosélyte, qui nous écouta. Le Seigneur lui toucha le coeur, de sorte qu'elle fit attention à ce que disait Paul.
15 and, when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us to become her guests. ‘Since you have shown your conviction,’ she said, ‘that I really am a believer in the Lord, come and stay in my house.’ And she insisted on our doing so.
Quand elle eut été baptisée avec sa famille, elle nous invita en disant: «Si vous me croyez fidèle au Seigneur, entrez dans ma maison; demeurez-y; » et elle nous en pria instamment.
16 One day, as we were on our way to the place of prayer, we were met by a girl possessed by a divining spirit, who made large profits for her masters by fortune-telling.
Il arriva, comme nous allions à la Prière, qu'une esclave, possédée d'un Esprit devin, se présenta à nous. Elle faisait gagner beaucoup d'argent à ses maîtres en annonçant l'avenir.
17 This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, calling, ‘These men are servants of the most high God, and they are bringing you news of a way to salvation.’
Elle se mit à nous suivre, Paul et nous. «Ces hommes-là, criait-elle, sont des serviteurs du Dieu suprême, ils vous annoncent le chemin du salut.»
18 She had been doing this for several days, when Paul, much vexed, turned and said to the spirit within her, ‘In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to leave her.’ That very moment the spirit left her.
Elle fit cela plusieurs jours; enfin Paul, impatienté, se retourna et dit à l'Esprit: «Je t'ordonne, au nom de Jésus-Christ, de sortir de cette femme.» A l'instant même, il sortit.
19 When her masters saw that there was no hope of further profit from her, they seized Paul and Silas, dragged them into the public square to the authorities,
Cependant les maîtres de cette esclave, se voyant enlever le gain sur lequel ils comptaient, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, les traînèrent sur la place publique devant les magistrats
20 and took them before the Magistrates. ‘These men are causing a great disturbance in our town,’ they complained;
et les amenèrent aux préteurs. «Ces hommes-là, dirent-ils, troublent notre ville; ce sont des Juifs,
21 ‘They are Jews, and they are teaching customs which it is not right for us, as Romans, to sanction or adopt.’
et ils prêchent des coutumes qu'il ne nous est permis ni d'accepter ni de suivre, puisque nous sommes Romains!»
22 The mob rose as one person against them, and the Magistrates stripped them of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods.
La populace se souleva aussi contre eux, et les préteurs leur firent arracher leurs vêtements et les condamnèrent à recevoir la bastonnade.
23 After beating them severely, the Magistrates put them in prison, with orders to the jailer to keep them in safe custody.
On les frappa cruellement, puis on les jeta en prison, et il fut recommandé au geôlier de les garder en lieu sûr.
24 On receiving so strict an order, the Governor put them into the inner cell, and secured their feet in the stocks.
Celui-ci, pour obéir à cet ordre, les mit dans le cachot le plus reculé et engagea leurs pieds dans les ceps.
25 About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and while the prisoners were listening to them,
Vers le milieu de la nuit, Paul et Silas priaient, chantaient les louanges de Dieu, et les prisonniers les écoutaient,
26 suddenly there was an earthquake of such violence that the jail was shaken to its foundations; all the doors flew open, and all the prisoners’ chains were loosened.
quand tout à coup se produisit un tremblement de terre si violent que la prison fut ébranlée jusque dans ses fondements; toutes les portes s'ouvrirent instantanément, et les liens de tous les prisonniers se relâchèrent.
27 Roused from his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, the Governor drew his sword intending to kill himself, in the belief that the prisoners had escaped.
Le geôlier, réveillé en sursaut et voyant ouvertes les portes de la prison, tira son épée et voulut se donner la mort, croyant que les prisonniers s'étaient échappés.
28 But Paul called our loudly, ‘Do not harm yourself; we are all here.’
Mais Paul lui parla: «Ne te fais point de mal, lui cria-t-il, nous sommes tous ici.»
29 Calling for a light, the Governor rushed in, and flung himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas.
Alors le geôlier demanda de la lumière, entra précipitamment dans le cachot et se jeta tout tremblant aux pieds de Paul et de Silas;
30 Then he led them out, and said, ‘What must I do to be saved?’
puis il les fit sortir et leur dit: «Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé?»
31 ‘Believe in Jesus, our Lord,’ they replied, ‘and you will be saved, you and your household too.’
Ils lui répondirent: «Crois au Seigneur Jésus et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta maison.»
32 Then they spoke to him of God’s message, and to all his household as well.
Et ils lui annoncèrent la Parole de Dieu, à lui et à tous ceux de sa famille.
33 And that very hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds, and he himself and everyone belonging to him were baptized without delay.
Le geôlier les prenant avec lui à l'heure même, pendant la nuit, lava leurs plaies et se fit immédiatement baptiser, lui et tous les siens.
34 Afterwards he took them up to his house and set before them something to eat, rejoicing that he, with all his household, had come to believe in God.
Puis il les conduisit dans son logement et leur donna à manger; il était transporté de joie, et tous les siens l'étaient avec lui, d'avoir cru en Dieu.
35 In the morning the Magistrates sent the guards with an order for the men to be discharged.
Le jour venu, les préteurs envoyèrent les licteurs dire au geôlier: «Relâche ces hommes!»
36 The jailer told Paul of his instructions. ‘The Magistrates have sent an order for your discharge,’ he said, ‘so you had better leave the place at once and go quietly away.’
Le geôlier rapporta ces paroles à Paul: Les préteurs me font dire de vous relâcher; partez donc et allez en paix.»
37 But Paul’s answer to them was, ‘They have flogged us in public without trial, though we are Roman citizens, and they have put us in prison, and now they are for sending us out secretly! No, indeed! Let them come and take us out themselves.’
Mais Paul répondit aux licteurs: «Ils nous ont fait frapper en public et sans jugement, nous, des citoyens romains, puis ils nous ont jetés en prison, et maintenant ils nous font sortir en cachette! Non, non, il faut qu'ils viennent eux-mêmes et nous raccompagnent!»
38 The guards reported his words to the Magistrates, who, on hearing that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, were alarmed,
Les licteurs répétèrent ces paroles aux préteurs. Ceux-ci, apprenant qu'ils étaient romains, prirent peur;
39 and went to the prison, and did their best to conciliate them. Then they took them out, and begged them to leave the city.
ils vinrent les apaiser, les raccompagnèrent et les prièrent de quitter la ville.
40 When Paul and Silas left the prison, they went to Lydia’s house, and, after they had seen the Lord’s followers, and encouraged them, they left the place.
Quant à eux, à leur sortie de prison, ils se rendirent chez Lydie, ils y virent les frères, leur adressèrent quelques exhortations et partirent.
