Deuteronomy 4
1 Now, Israel [God prevails], sh'ma ·hear obey· the statutes and to the judgments, which I teach you, to do them; that you may live, and go in and possess the land which Adonai, the God of your fathers, gives you.
イスラエルよ、いま、わたしがあなたがたに教える定めと、おきてとを聞いて、これを行いなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは生きることができ、あなたがたの先祖の神、主が賜わる地にはいって、それを自分のものとすることができよう。
2 You shall not add to the word which I enjoin you, neither shall you take away from it, that you may keep the mitzvot ·instructions· of Adonai your God which I enjoin you.
わたしがあなたがたに命じる言葉に付け加えてはならない。また減らしてはならない。わたしが命じるあなたがたの神、主の命令を守ることのできるためである。
3 Your eyes have seen what Adonai did because of Baal Peor; for all the men who followed Baal Peor, Adonai your God has destroyed them from among you.
あなたがたの目は、主がバアル・ペオルで行われたことを見た。ペオルのバアルに従った人々は、あなたの神、主がことごとく、あなたのうちから滅ぼしつくされたのである。
4 But you who were faithful to Adonai your God are all alive today.
しかし、あなたがたの神、主につき従ったあなたがたは皆、きょう、生きながらえている。
5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as Adonai my God enjoined me, that you should do so in the middle of the land where you go in to possess it.
わたしはわたしの神、主が命じられたとおりに、定めと、おきてとを、あなたがたに教える。あなたがたがはいって、自分のものとする地において、そのように行うためである。
6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who shall sh'ma ·hear obey· all these statutes, and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”
あなたがたは、これを守って行わなければならない。これは、もろもろの民にあなたがたの知恵、また知識を示す事である。彼らは、このもろもろの定めを聞いて、『この大いなる国民は、まことに知恵あり、知識ある民である』と言うであろう。
7 For what great nation is there, that has a deity so near to them, as Yahweh Eloheikhem [Yahweh our God] is whenever we call on him?
われわれの神、主は、われわれが呼び求める時、つねにわれわれに近くおられる。いずれの大いなる国民に、このように近くおる神があるであろうか。
8 What great nation is there, that has statutes and judgement so upright as all this Torah ·Teaching·, which I set before you today?
また、いずれの大いなる国民に、きょう、わたしがあなたがたの前に立てるこのすべての律法のような正しい定めと、おきてとがあるであろうか。
9 Only be careful, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes saw, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your children and your children’s children;
ただあなたはみずから慎み、またあなた自身をよく守りなさい。そして目に見たことを忘れず、生きながらえている間、それらの事をあなたの心から離してはならない。またそれらのことを、あなたの子孫に知らせなければならない。
10 the day that you stood before Adonai your God in Horeb [Desert], when Adonai said to me, “Assemble the people to me, and I will make them sh'ma ·hear obey· my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.”
あなたがホレブにおいて、あなたの神、主の前に立った日に、主はわたしに言われた、『民をわたしのもとに集めよ。わたしは彼らにわたしの言葉を聞かせ、地上に生きながらえる間、彼らにわたしを恐れることを学ばせ、またその子供を教えることのできるようにさせよう』。
11 You came near and stood under the mountain. The mountain burned with fire to the heart of the sky, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.
そこであなたがたは近づいて、山のふもとに立ったが、山は火で焼けて、その炎は中天に達し、暗黒と雲と濃い雲とがあった。
12 Adonai spoke to you out of the middle of the fire: you sh'ma ·hear obey· the voice of words, but you saw no form; you only heard a voice.
時に主は火の中から、あなたがたに語られたが、あなたがたは言葉の声を聞いたけれども、声ばかりで、なんの形も見なかった。
13 He declared to you his covenant ·binding contract between two or more parties·, which he enjoined you to perform, even the Ten Words. He wrote them on two stone tablets.
主はその契約を述べて、それを行うように、あなたがたに命じられた。それはすなわち十誡であって、主はそれを二枚の石の板に書きしるされた。
14 Adonai enjoined me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it.
その時、主はわたしに命じて、あなたがたに定めと、おきてとを教えさせられた。あなたがたが渡って行って自分のものとする地で、行わせるためであった。
15 Be very careful, for you saw no kind of form on the day that Adonai spoke to you in Horeb [Desert] out of the middle of the fire,
それゆえ、あなたがたはみずから深く慎まなければならない。ホレブで主が火の中からあなたがたに語られた日に、あなたがたはなんの形も見なかった。
16 lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourself an engraved image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
それであなたがたは道を誤って、自分のために、どんな形の刻んだ像をも造ってはならない。男または女の像を造ってはならない。
17 the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky,
すなわち地の上におるもろもろの獣の像、空を飛ぶもろもろの鳥の像、
18 the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth;
地に這うもろもろの物の像、地の下の水の中におるもろもろの魚の像を造ってはならない。
19 and lest you lift up your eyes to the sky, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the army of the sky, you are drawn away and worship them, and abad ·serve· them, which Adonai your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole sky.
あなたはまた目を上げて天を望み、日、月、星すなわちすべて天の万象を見、誘惑されてそれを拝み、それに仕えてはならない。それらのものは、あなたの神、主が全天下の万民に分けられたものである。
20 But Adonai has taken you, and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt [Abode of slavery], to be to him a people of inheritance, as it is today.
しかし、主はあなたがたを取って、鉄の炉すなわちエジプトから導き出し、自分の所有の民とされた。きょう、見るとおりである。
21 Furthermore Adonai was angry with me for your sakes, and swore that I should not go over the Jordan [Descender], and that I should not go in to that good land, which Adonai your God gives you for an inheritance;
ところで主はあなたがたのゆえに、わたしを怒り、わたしがヨルダンを渡って行くことができないことと、あなたの神、主が嗣業としてあなたに賜わる良い地にはいることができないこととを誓われた。
22 but I must die in this land. I must not go over the Jordan [Descender]; but you shall go over, and possess that good land.
わたしはこの地で死ぬ。ヨルダンを渡って行くことはできない。しかしあなたがたは渡って行って、あの良い地を獲るであろう。
23 Be careful, lest you forget the covenant ·binding contract between two or more parties· of Adonai your God, which he made with you, and make yourselves an engraved image in the form of anything which Adonai your God has enjoined forbidden for you.
あなたがたは慎み、あなたがたの神、主があなたがたと結ばれた契約を忘れて、あなたの神、主が禁じられたどんな形の刻んだ像をも造ってはならない。
24 For Adonai your God is 'Akal 'Esh [Consuming Fire], a jealous God.
あなたの神、主は焼きつくす火、ねたむ神である。
25 When you shall father children, and children’s children, and you shall have been long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make an engraved image in the form of anything, and shall do that which is evil in Adonai your God’s sight, to provoke him to anger;
あなたがたが子を生み、孫を得、長くその地におるうちに、道を誤って、すべて何かの形に刻んだ像を造り、あなたの神、主の目の前に悪をなして、その憤りを引き起すことがあれば、
26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will soon utterly perish from off the land which you go over the Jordan [Descender] to possess it. You will not prolong your days on it, but will utterly be destroyed.
わたしは、きょう、天と地を呼んであなたがたに対してあかしとする。あなたがたはヨルダンを渡って行って獲る地から、たちまち全滅するであろう。あなたがたはその所で長く命を保つことができず、全く滅ぼされるであろう。
27 Adonai will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations, where Adonai will lead you away.
主はあなたがたを国々に散らされるであろう。そして主があなたがたを追いやられる国民のうちに、あなたがたの残る者の数は少ないであろう。
28 There you shall abad ·serve· deities, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor sh'ma ·hear obey·, nor eat, nor smell.
その所であなたがたは人が手で作った、見ることも、聞くことも、食べることも、かぐこともない木や石の神々に仕えるであろう。
29 But from there you shall seek Adonai your God, and you shall find him, when you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.
しかし、その所からあなたの神、主を求め、もし心をつくし、精神をつくして、主を求めるならば、あなたは主に会うであろう。
30 When you are in oppression, and all these things have come on you, in the latter days you shall teshuvah ·completely return· to Adonai your God, and sh'ma ·hear obey· to his voice.
後の日になって、あなたがなやみにあい、これらのすべての事が、あなたに臨むとき、もしあなたの神、主に立ち帰ってその声に聞きしたがうならば、
31 For Adonai your God is a merciful God. He will not fail you, neither destroy you, nor forget the covenant ·binding contract between two or more parties· of your fathers which he swore to them.
あなたの神、主はいつくしみの深い神であるから、あなたを捨てず、あなたを滅ぼさず、またあなたの先祖に誓った契約を忘れられないであろう。
32 For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and from the one end of the sky to the other, whether there has been anything as this great thing is, or has been sh'ma ·heard obeyed· like it?
試みにあなたの前に過ぎ去った日について問え。神が地上に人を造られた日からこのかた、天のこの端から、かの端までに、かつてこのように大いなる事があったであろうか。このようなことを聞いたことがあったであろうか。
33 Did a people ever sh'ma ·hear obey· the voice of God speaking out of the middle of the fire, as you have sh'ma ·heard obeyed·, and live?
火の中から語られる神の声をあなたが聞いたように、聞いてなお生きていた民がかつてあったであろうか。
34 Or has God tried to go and take a nation for himself from among another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that Adonai your God did for you in Egypt [Abode of slavery] before your eyes?
あるいはまた、あなたがたの神、主がエジプトにおいて、あなたがたの目の前に、あなたがたのためにもろもろの事をなされたように、試みと、しるしと、不思議と、戦いと、強い手と、伸ばした腕と、大いなる恐るべき事とをもって臨み、一つの国民を他の国民のうちから引き出して、自分の民とされた神が、かつてあったであろうか。
35 It was shown to you so that you might know that Adonai is God. There is no one else besides him,
あなたにこの事を示したのは、主こそ神であって、ほかに神のないことを知らせるためであった。
36 Out of heaven he made you to sh'ma ·hear obey· his voice, that he might instruct you. On earth he made you to see his great fire; and you sh'ma ·heard obeyed· his words out of the middle of the fire.
あなたを訓練するために、主は天からその声を聞かせ、地上では、またその大いなる火を示された。あなたはその言葉が火の中から出るのを聞いた。
37 Because he 'ahav ·affectionately loved· your fathers, therefore he chose their offspring after them, and brought you out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt [Abode of slavery];
主はあなたの先祖たちを愛されたので、その後の子孫を選び、大いなる力をもって、みずからあなたをエジプトから導き出し、
38 to drive out nations from before you greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is today.
あなたよりも大きく、かつ強いもろもろの国民を、あなたの前から追い払い、あなたをその地に導き入れて、これを嗣業としてあなたに与えようとされること、今日見るとおりである。
39 Know therefore today, and take it to heart, that Adonai himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. There is no one else.
それゆえ、あなたは、きょう知って、心にとめなければならない。上は天、下は地において、主こそ神にいまし、ほかに神のないことを。
40 You shall keep his statutes, and his mitzvot ·instructions·, which I enjoin you today, that it may go well with you, and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land, which Adonai your God gives you, forever.
あなたは、きょう、わたしが命じる主の定めと命令とを守らなければならない。そうすれば、あなたとあなたの後の子孫はさいわいを得、あなたの神、主が永久にあなたに賜わる地において、長く命を保つことができるであろう」。
41 Then Moses [Drawn out] set apart three cities beyond the Jordan [Descender] toward the sunrise;
それからモーセはヨルダンの向こう側、東の方に三つの町々を指定した。
42 that the man slayer might flee there, who kills his neighbor unawares, and didn’t hate him in time past; and that fleeing to one of these cities he might live:
過去の恨みによるのではなく、あやまって隣人を殺した者をそこにのがれさせ、その町の一つにのがれて、命を全うさせるためであった。
43 Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, for the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.
すなわちルベンびとのためには荒野の中の高地にあるベゼルを、ガドびとのためにはギレアデのラモテを、マナセびとのためにはバシャンのゴランを定めた。
44 This is the Torah ·Teaching· which Moses [Drawn out] set before the children of Israel [God prevails].
モーセがイスラエルの人々の前に示した律法はこれである。
45 These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses [Drawn out] spoke to the children of Israel [God prevails], when they came out of Egypt [Abode of slavery],
イスラエルの人々がエジプトから出たとき、モーセが彼らに述べたあかしと、定めと、おきてとはこれである。
46 beyond the Jordan [Descender], in the valley over against Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses [Drawn out] and the children of Israel [God prevails] struck, when they came out of Egypt [Abode of slavery].
すなわちヨルダンの向こう側、アモリびとの王シホンの国のベテペオルに対する谷においてこれを述べた。シホンはヘシボンに住んでいたが、モーセとイスラエルの人々が、エジプトを出てきた時、これを撃ち敗って、
47 They took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites [Descendants of Talkers], who were beyond the Jordan [Descender] toward the sunrise;
その国を獲、またバシャンの王オグの国を獲た。このふたりはアモリびとの王であって、ヨルダンの向こう側、東の方におった。
48 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, even to Mount Sion (also called Hermon [Devoted to destruction]),
彼らの獲た地はアルノン川のほとりにあるアロエルからシリオン山すなわちヘルモンに及び、
49 and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan [Descender] eastward, even to the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.
ヨルダンの東側のアラバの全部をかねて、アラバの海に達し、ピスガのふもとに及んだ。
