Ephesians 2

1 You were made alive when you were dead in your transgressions and sins,

Et vous, vous étiez morts par vos fautes et par les péchés,

2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience; (aiōn g165)

auxquels vous vous livriez autrefois, suivant le train de ce monde, suivant le prince de la puissance de l’air, de l'esprit qui agit maintenant dans les hommes rebelles. (aiōn g165)

3 among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

Nous tous aussi, nous étions autrefois de ce nombre, quand nous vivions dans nos passions charnelles, obéissant aux volontés de notre chair et aux caprices de notre esprit; et nous étions naturellement des enfants de colère comme les autres.

4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us,

Mais Dieu, qui est riche en miséricorde, à cause du grand amour dont il nous a aimés,

5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

et alors que nous étions morts par nos fautes, nous a rappelés à la vie avec Christ (c'est par grâce que vous êtes sauvés),

6 and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

il nous a ressuscités avec lui, il nous a fait asseoir avec lui dans les cieux, en Jésus-Christ;

7 that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus; (aiōn g165)

afin de faire voir dans les temps qui vont venir, les richesses infinies de sa grâce, par la bonté dont nous sommes les objets en Jésus-Christ. (aiōn g165)

8 for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

C'est par grâce, en effet, que vous êtes sauvés, par le moyen de la foi; et cela ne vient pas de vous, c'est le don de Dieu;

9 not of works, that no one would boast.

cela ne vient pas des oeuvres, afin que nul ne se glorifie

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

— car nous sommes son ouvrage, ayant été créés en Jésus-Christ, pour faire de bonnes oeuvres, et Dieu a commencé par nous y rendre propres, afin que nous les pratiquions.

11 Therefore remember that once you, the non-Jews in the flesh, who are called "uncircumcision" by that which is called "circumcision," (in the flesh, made by hands);

C'est pourquoi, souvenez-vous, qu'autrefois, vous, Gentils par la chair, traités d'incirconcis par les soi-disant circoncis, qui ne le sont qu'en la chair,

12 that you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

souvenez-vous que vous étiez, en ce temps-là, sans Christ, étrangers à la bourgeoisie d'Israël, en dehors des alliances résultant de la promesse, sans espérance et sans Dieu dans le monde;

13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

mais aujourd'hui, en Christ, vous qui étiez autrefois éloignés, vous êtes rapprochés par le sang de Christ.

14 For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition,

Car c'est lui qui est notre paix, lui qui des deux peuples n'en a fait qu'un: il a abattu le mur de séparation, l'inimitié entre eux,

15 having abolished in the flesh the hostility, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man of the two, making peace;

abrogeant par sa chair la loi des ordonnances impératives; il a voulu par là refondre ces deux hommes en lui, pour en faire un seul homme nouveau, en établissant la paix,

16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by which he put to death their enmity.

et réconcilier l'un et l'autre avec Dieu, par sa croix, de manière à ce qu'ils forment un seul et même corps, en détruisant en sa personne l'inimitié entre eux.

17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near.

Et il est venu annoncer la paix à vous, qui étiez éloignés, et la paix à ceux qui étaient proches;

18 For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.

car c'est par lui que nous avons, les uns et les autres, accès auprès de Dieu dans un seul et même esprit.

19 So then you are no longer foreigners and noncitizens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,

Ainsi donc vous n'êtes plus des étrangers ni des passagers, mais vous êtes concitoyens des saints et gens de la maison de Dieu.

20 being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;

Vous avez été édifiés sur le fondement des apôtres et des prophètes, la pierre angulaire étant Jésus-Christ lui-même.

21 in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord;

C'est en lui que tout l'édifice, harmoniquement ordonné, s'élève pour être un temple saint, dans le Seigneur;

22 in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.

c'est en lui que, vous aussi, vous êtes édifiés, pour former par l'Esprit une maison où Dieu habite.
