Nehemiah 13

1 On that day there was read in the book of Moses before the ears of the people; and there was found written therein, that no 'Ammonite or Moabite should come into the congregation of God for ever;

Samme dag blev det lest op for folket av Moseboken, og der fant de skrevet at ingen ammonitt eller moabitt nogensinne skulde være med i Guds menighet,

2 Because they had not met the children of Israel with bread and with water, but had hired Bil'am against them, that he should curse them; although our God had changed the curse into a blessing.

fordi de ikke kom Israels barn i møte med brød og vann, men leide Bileam imot dem til å forbanne dem; allikevel vendte vår Gud forbannelsen til velsignelse.

3 And it tame to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated all the alien mixture from Israel.

Da de nu hørte hvad det stod i loven, utskilte de alle fremmede fra Israel.

4 And before this, Elyashib the priest, appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, and a near [of kin] unto Tobiyah,

Men nogen tid før dette var presten Eljasib, som var i nær slekt med Tobias, blitt satt til å ha tilsyn med kammerne i Guds hus.

5 Had prepared for him a large chamber, where they had laid in former times the meat-offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was ordained for the Levites, and the singers, and the gatekeepers, and the heave-offering of the priests.

Og han hadde innredet et stort kammer for ham der hvor de før hadde lagt inn matofferet, viraken og karene og den tiende av kornet, mosten og oljen som var levittenes og sangernes og dørvokternes rettighet, og den hellige avgift til prestene.

6 But during all this I was not at Jerusalem; for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king of Babylon I went back unto the king, and after the lapse of some time I obtained by request [leave] of the king;

Under alt dette var jeg ikke i Jerusalem; for i Babels konge Artaxerxes' to og trettiende år var jeg kommet tilbake til kongen. Men da nogen tid var gått, bad jeg igjen kongen om lov til å reise,

7 And I came to Jerusalem, and perceived the evil that Elyashib had done for Tobiyah, in preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

og da jeg så kom til Jerusalem, la jeg merke til det onde Eljasib hadde gjort for Tobias' skyld ved å innrede et kammer for ham i forgårdene til Guds hus.

8 And it displeased me greatly: wherefore I cast forth all the household vessels of Tobiyah away out of the chamber.

Dette syntes jeg meget ille om, og jeg kastet alt Tobias' innbo ut av kammeret

9 And I gave the order, whereupon they cleansed the chambers; and I had brought thither again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat-offering and the frankincense.

og bød at de skulde rense kammerne, og så lot jeg atter de til Guds hus hørende kar og matofferet og viraken legge inn der.

10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given [them]: so that the Levites and the singers, that used to do the work, were fled every one to his field.

Jeg fikk også vite at levittene ikke hadde fått det som tilkom dem, og at derfor levittene og sangerne, som skulde gjøre tjeneste, hadde forlatt tjenesten og flyttet ut hver til sin gård.

11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why hath the house of God become forsaken? And I gathered them together, and placed them on their posts.

Da gikk jeg i rette med formennene og spurte dem hvorfor Guds hus var blitt forsømt, og jeg kalte dem sammen og innsatte dem igjen, hver på sin plass.

12 And all Judah brought the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.

Og hele Juda førte tienden av kornet, mosten og oljen til forrådskammerne.

13 And I appointed receivers over the treasuries, Shelemyah the priest and Zadok the scribe, and Pedayah of the Levites; and with them acted Chanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Matthanyah; for they were accounted as faithful, and it was their duty to make a distribution among their brethren.

Så satte jeg presten Selemja og Sadok, den skriftlærde, og Pedaja, en av levittene, til å ha tilsyn med forrådskammerne og Hanan, sønn av Mattanjas sønn Sakkur, til å gå dem til hånde; for de blev holdt for å være pålitelige; dem pålå det nu å dele ut til sine brødre.

14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my pious deeds which I have done for the house of my God, and for those that had charge of it.

Kom mig i hu, min Gud, for dette og utslett ikke de gode gjerninger som jeg har gjort mot min Guds hus og for tjenesten der!

15 In those days I saw in Judah some treading wine-presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading burdens on asses, as also wine, grapes and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day; and I warned them on the day whereon they sold provisions.

Ved samme tid så jeg i Juda nogen som trådte vinpersene om sabbaten og førte hjem kornbånd og lesste dem på asenene, og likeledes vin, druer, fikener og alle slags varer og førte det til Jerusalem på sabbatsdagen. Jeg advarte dem den dag de solgte disse levnetsmidler.

16 Also the men of Tyre [that] dwelt therein brought fish and all kinds of wares, and sold [them] on the sabbath unto the children of Judah and in Jerusalem.

Også folk fra Tyrus, som opholdt sig der, kom med fisk og alle slags varer og solgte dem på sabbaten til Judas barn, og det i Jerusalem.

17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this which ye are doing, and profaning [thereby] the sabbath day?

Da gikk jeg i rette med de fornemme i Juda og sa til dem: Hvorledes kan I bære eder så ille at og vanhellige sabbatsdagen?

18 Did not your fathers act thus, wherefore our God brought over us all this evil, and over this city? and ye bring yet more wrath over Israel by profaning the sabbath.

Var det ikke fordi eders fedre gjorde således at vår Gud førte all denne ulykke over oss og over denne by? Og nu fører I ennu større vrede over Israel ved å vanhellige sabbaten!

19 And it came to pass, that, when the shadows were lengthened in the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I gave the order, whereupon the gates were locked, and I ordered that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my young men did I place at the gates, that there should be brought in no burden on the sabbath-day.

Så snart det blev mørkt i Jerusalems porter før sabbaten, bød jeg at dørene skulde lukkes, og at de ikke skulde åpnes igjen før efter sabbaten. Jeg satte nogen av mine tjenere på vakt ved portene og sa: Det skal ingen varer føres inn på sabbatsdagen.

20 But the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside of Jerusalem once or twice.

Kremmerne og de som solgte alle slags varer, overnattet da utenfor Jerusalem både en og to ganger.

21 Thereupon did I warn them, and said unto them, Why do ye lodge along the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth they came no more on the sabbath.

Da advarte jeg dem og sa til dem: Hvorfor overnatter I foran muren? Gjør I det en gang til, så legger jeg hånd på eder. Fra den tid kom de ikke mere på sabbaten.

22 And I ordered the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep watch at the gates, to sanctify the sabbath-day. Also this remember unto me, O my God, and shield me according to the abundance of thy kindness.

Og levittene bød jeg å rense sig og komme og holde vakt ved portene, så sabbatsdagen kunde bli helligholdt. Kom mig også dette i hu, min Gud, og miskunn dig over mig efter din store nåde! SLM

23 In those days also I saw certain Jews that had brought home wives of Ashdod, of 'Ammon, and of Moab:

På den tid så jeg også de jøder som hadde tatt asdodittiske, ammonittiske og moabittiske kvinner til hustruer;

24 And their children spoke partly in the speech of Ashdod, and did not understand to speak in the Jewish language, but according to the language of one or the other people.

av deres barn talte halvdelen asdodittisk - de kunde ikke tale jødisk - eller et av de andre folks tungemål.

25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked out their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, nor for yourselves.

Jeg gikk i rette med dem og forbannet dem, ja, nogen av dem slo jeg og rev dem i håret; jeg lot dem sverge ved Gud og sa: I skal ikke gi eders døtre til deres sønner eller ta nogen av deres døtre til hustruer for eders sønner eller for eder selv.

26 Did not Solomon the king of Israel sin by these things? and although among the many nations there was never a king like him, and beloved as he was by his God, and God had placed him as king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did the alien women mislead to sin.

Var det ikke med sådant Israels konge Salomo forsyndet sig? Iblandt de mange folk var det ingen konge som han, og han var elsket av sin Gud, og Gud satte ham til konge over hele Israel; men endog ham forførte de fremmede kvinner til synd.

27 Shall we then hear it said of you, that ye do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in bringing home alien wives?

Og eder skulde det være tillatt å gjøre denne store ondskap og vise troløshet mot vår Gud ved å ta fremmede kvinner til hustruer!

28 And one of the sons of Joyada', the son of Elyashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Choronite; wherefore I chased him away from me.

En av sønnene til Jojada, ypperstepresten Eljasibs sønn, var svigersønn av horonitten Sanballat; derfor drev jeg ham bort fra mig.

29 Remember [this] unto them, O my God, because of the defilements of the priesthood, and of the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

Kom dem i hu, min Gud, at de har vanæret prestedømmet og prestedømmets og levittenes pakt!

30 Thus cleansed I them from all aliens, and I appointed the watches of the priests and the Levites, every one in his work;

Så renset jeg dem fra alt fremmed, og jeg foreskrev hvad prestene og levittene hadde å vareta, hver i sin gjerning,

31 And for the procuring of the wood, at fixed time, and for the first-fruits. Remember this unto me, O my God, for good.

og hvorledes det skulde være med avgivelsen av ved til fastsatte tider og med førstegrøden. Kom mig det i hu, min Gud, og regn mig det til gode!
