Deuteronomy 8

1 All the commandment which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do; in order that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and take possession of the land which the Lord hath sworn unto your fathers.

Vous aurez soin de mettre en pratique tous les commandements que je vous prescris aujourd'hui, afin que vous viviez, que vous multipliiez, que vous entriez et que vous preniez possession du pays que Yahweh a juré de donner à vos pères.

2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, in order to afflict thee, to prove thee, to know what is in thy heart, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments, or not.

Tu te souviendras de tout le chemin par lequel Yahweh, ton Dieu, t'a fait marcher pendant ces quarante années dans le désert, afin de t'humilier, et de t'éprouver, pour connaître les sentiments de ton cœur, si tu garderas ou non ses commandements.

3 And he afflicted thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and he gave thee manna to eat, which thou knewest not, and which thy fathers had not known; in order that he might make thee know that not by bread alone man doth live, but by every thing that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.

Il t'a humilié, il t'a fait avoir faim, et il t'a nourri de la manne, que tu ne connaissais pas et que n'avaient pas connue tes pères, afin de t'apprendre que l'homme ne vit pas de pain seulement, mais que l'homme vit de tout ce qui sort de la bouche de Dieu.

4 Thy garment did not fall worn out from thee, and thy foot did not swell, these forty years.

Ton vêtement ne s'est pas usé sur toi, et ton pied ne s'est pas enflé, pendant ces quarante années:

5 And thou shalt consider in thy heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so doth the Lord thy God chasten thee.

afin que tu reconnaisses en ton cœur que Yahweh, ton Dieu, t'instruit, comme un homme instruit son enfant,

6 And thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.

et que tu observes les commandements de Yahweh, ton Dieu, en marchant dans ses voies et en le craignant.

7 For the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and mountains;

Car Yahweh, ton Dieu, va te faire entrer dans un bon pays, pays de torrents, de sources et d'eaux profondes, qui jaillissent dans les vallées et les montagnes;

8 A land of wheat, and barley, and of the vine, and the fig-tree, and the pomegranate; a land of the oil-olive, and of honey;

pays de froment, d'orge, de vignes, de figuiers et de grenadiers; pays d'oliviers, d'huile et de miel;

9 A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, wherein thou shalt not lack anything; a land the stones whereof are iron, and out of the mountains of which thou canst hew copper.

pays où tu mangeras du pain en abondance, où tu ne manqueras de rien; pays dont les pierres sont du fer, et des montagnes duquel tu tireras l'airain.

10 And when thou hast eaten and art satisfied, then shalt thou bless the Lord thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.

Tu mangeras et te rassasieras, et tu béniras Yahweh, ton Dieu, pour le bon pays qu'il t'a donné.

11 Take heed unto thyself that thou forget not the Lord thy God, so as not to keep his commandments, and his ordinances, and his statutes, which I command thee this day;

Garde-toi d'oublier Yahweh, ton Dieu, négligeant d'observer ses commandements, ses ordonnances et ses lois que je te prescris aujourd'hui,

12 That when thou hast eaten and art satisfied, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;

de peur que, quand tu mangeras et te rassasieras, que tu bâtiras et habiteras de belles maisons,

13 And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold are multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied:

que tu verras se multiplier tes bœufs et tes brebis. S'augmenter ton argent, ton or, et s'augmenter tous tes biens,

14 Thy heart be then not lifted up, and thou forget the Lord thy God, who hath brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery;

ton cœur ne s'élève et que tu n'oublies Yahweh, ton Dieu, qui t'a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude;

15 Who hath led thee through the great and terrible wilderness, wherein are snakes, poisonous serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there is no water; who hath brought forth for thee water out of the flinty rock;

qui t'a conduit dans ce grand et affreux désert, où il y a des serpents brûlants et des scorpions, dans des lieux arides et sans eau, et qui a fait jaillir pour toi de l'eau du rocher le plus dur;

16 Who hath fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not; in order to afflict thee, and in order to prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

qui t'a donné à manger dans le désert une manne inconnue à tes pères, afin de t'humilier et de t'éprouver, pour te faire ensuite du bien;

17 And thou say in thy heart, My power and the strength of my hand have gotten me this wealth.

et que tu ne dises en ton cœur; « C'est ma force et la vigueur de ma main qui m'ont procuré ces richesses. »

18 But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God; for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth; in order that he might fulfill his covenant which he hath sworn unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Souviens-toi de Yahweh, ton Dieu, car c'est lui qui te donne de la force pour les acquérir, afin d'accomplir, comme tu le vois aujourd'hui, son alliance qu'il a jurée à tes pères.

19 And it shall come to pass, that, if thou shouldst forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and bow thyself down to them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish;

Si, oubliant Yahweh, ton Dieu, il t'arrive d'aller après d'autres dieux, de les servir et de te prosterner devant eux, j'atteste aujourd'hui contre vous que vous périrez certainement.

20 Like the nations which the Lord destroyeth from before you, so shall ye perish; in recompense of that ye would not hearken unto the voice of the Lord your God.

Comme les nations que Yahweh fait périr devant vous, ainsi vous périrez, parce que vous n'aurez pas écouté la voix de Yahweh, votre Dieu.
