Genesis 47
1 And Joseph came and told Pharao, [saying], My father, and my brethren, and their cattle, and their oxen, and all their possessions, are come out of the land of Chanaan, and behold, they are in the land of Gesem.
Joseph vint annoncer la nouvelle à Pharaon, en disant "Mon père et mes frères, avec leur menu et leur gros bétail et tout ce qu’ils possèdent, sont venus du pays de Canaan; et ils se trouvent dans la province de Gessen."
2 And he took of his brethren five men, and set them before Pharao.
Puis il prit une partie de ses frères, cinq hommes et il les mit en présence de Pharaon.
3 And Pharao said to the brethren of Joseph, What is your occupation? and they said to Pharao, Your servants are shepherds, both we and our father.
Pharaon dit à ses frères: "Quelles sont vos occupations?" Ils répondirent à Pharaon: "Tes serviteurs sont une famille de bergers, de père en fils."
4 And they said to Pharao, We are come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for the flocks of your servants, for the famine has prevailed in the land of Chanaan; now then, we will dwell in the land of Gesem. And Pharao said to Joseph, Let them dwell in the land of Gesem; and if you know that there are among them able men, make them overseers of my cattle. So Jacob and his sons came into Egypt, to Joseph; and Pharao, king of Egypt, heard [of it].
Et ils dirent à Pharaon: "Nous sommes venus émigrer dans ce pays, parce que le pâturage manque aux troupeaux de tes serviteurs, la disette étant grande dans le pays de Canaan. Donc, permets à tes serviteurs d’habiter dans la province de Gessen."
5 And Pharao spoke to Joseph, saying, Your father, and your brethren, are come to you.
Pharaon dit à Joseph: "Ton père et tes frères sont venus auprès de toi.
6 Behold, the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brethren in the best land.
Le pays d’Égypte est mis à ta disposition; établis, dans sa meilleure province, ton père et tes frères. Qu’ils habitent la terre de Gessen et si tu reconnais qu’il y ait parmi eux des hommes de mérite, nomme-les inspecteurs des bestiaux de mon domaine."
7 And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharao; and Jacob blessed Pharao.
Joseph introduisit Jacob son père et le présenta à Pharaon; et Jacob rendit hommage à Pharaon.
8 And Pharao said to Jacob, How many are the years of the days of your life?
Pharaon dit à Jacob: "Quel est le nombre des années de ta vie?"
9 And Jacob said to Pharao, The days of the years of my life, wherein I sojourn, are a hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, they have not attained to the days of the life of my fathers, in which days they sojourned.
Et Jacob répondit à Pharaon: "Le nombre des années de mes pérégrinations, cent trente ans. II a été court et malheureux, le temps des années de ma vie et il ne vaut pas les années de la vie de mes pères, les jours de leurs pérégrinations."
10 And Jacob blessed Pharao, and departed from him.
Jacob salua Pharaon et se retira de devant lui.
11 And Joseph settled his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best land, in the land of Ramesses, as Pharao commanded.
Joseph établit son père et ses frères et leur donna droit de propriété dans le pays d’Égypte, dans le meilleur territoire, celui de Ramsès, comme l’avait ordonné Pharaon.
12 And Joseph gave provision to his father, and his brethren, and to all the house of his father, corn for each person.
Joseph nourrit son père, ses frères et toute la maison de son père, donnant des vivres selon les besoins de chaque famille.
13 And there was no corn in all the land, for the famine prevailed greatly; and the land of Egypt, and the land of Chanaan, fainted for the famine.
Or, le pain manqua dans toute la contrée, tant la disette était grande; et le pays d’Égypte et le pays de Canaan étaient accablés par la famine.
14 And Joseph gathered all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and the land of Chanaan, [in return for] the corn which they bought, and he distributed corn to them; and Joseph brought all the money into the house of Pharao.
Joseph recueillit tout l’argent qui se trouvait dans le pays d’Égypte et dans celui de Canaan, en échange du blé qu’ils achetaient et il fit entrer cet argent dans la maison de Pharaon.
15 And all the money failed out of the land of Egypt, and out of the land of Chanaan; and all the Egyptians came to Joseph, saying, Give us bread, and why do we die in your presence? for our money is spent.
Quand l’argent fut épuisé dans le pays d’Égypte et dans celui de Canaan, tous les Égyptiens s’adressèrent à Joseph, disant: "Donne-nous du pain; pourquoi péririons-nous sous tes yeux, faute d’argent?"
16 And Joseph said to them, Bring your cattle, and I will give you bread for your cattle, if your money is spent.
Joseph répondit: "Livrez vos bestiaux, je veux vous en fournir contre vos bestiaux, si l’argent manque."
17 And they brought their cattle to Joseph; and Joseph gave them bread in return for their horses, and for their sheep, and for their oxen, and for their asses; and Joseph maintained them with bread for all their cattle in that year.
Ils amenèrent leur bétail à Joseph et Joseph leur donna du pain en échange des chevaux, du menu bétail, du gros bétail et des ânes; ils les sustenta de nourriture, pour tout leur bétail, cette année-là.
18 And that year passed, and they came to him in the second year, and said to him, Must we then be consumed from before our lord? for if our money has failed, and our possessions, and our cattle, [brought] to you our lord, and there has not been left to us before our lord more than our own bodies and our land, [we are indeed destitute].
Cette année écoulée, ils vinrent à lui l’année suivante et lui dirent: "Nous ne pouvons dissimuler à mon seigneur que, l’argent et le bétail ayant entièrement passé à mon seigneur, il ne nous reste à lui offrir que nos corps et nos terres.
19 In order, then, that we die not before you, and the land be made desolate, buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants to Pharao: give seed that we may sow, and live and not die, so our land shall not be made desolate.
Pourquoi péririons-nous à ta vue, nous et nos terres? Deviens notre possesseur et celui de nos terres, moyennant des vivres: nous et nos terres serons serfs de Pharaon; tu nous donneras de la semence et nous vivrons au lieu de périr et la terre ne sera pas désolée."
20 And Joseph bought all the land of the Egyptians, for Pharao; for the Egyptians sold their land to Pharao; for the famine prevailed against them, and the land became Pharao's.
Joseph acquit tout le sol de l’Égypte au profit de Pharaon, les Égyptiens ayant vendu chacun leurs champs, contraints qu’ils étaient par la famine: ainsi la contrée appartint à Pharaon.
21 And he brought the people into bondage to him, for servants, from one extremity of Egypt to the other,
A l’égard du peuple, il le transféra d’une ville dans l’autre, dans toute l’étendue du territoire égyptien.
22 except only the land of the priests; Joseph bought not this, for Pharao gave a portion in the way of gift to the priests; and they ate their portion which Pharao gave them; therefore they sold not their land.
Toutefois, le domaine des prêtres, il ne l’acquit point. Car les prêtres recevaient de Pharaon une portion fixe et ils consommaient la portion que leur allouait Pharaon, de sorte qu’ils ne vendirent pas leur domaine.
23 And Joseph said to all the Egyptians, Behold, I have bought you and your land this day for Pharao; take seed for you, and sow the land.
Et Joseph dit au peuple: "Donc, je vous ai acheté aujourd’hui vous et vos terres pour Pharaon. Voici pour vous des grains, ensemencez la terre;
24 And there shall be the fruits of it; and you shall give the fifth part to Pharao, and the four [remaining] parts shall be for yourselves, for seed for the earth, and for food for you, and all that are in your houses.
puis, à l’époque des produits, vous donnerez un cinquième à Pharaon; les quatre autres parts vous serviront à ensemencer les champs et à vous nourrir ainsi que vos gens et vos familles."
25 And they said, You have saved us; we have found favor before our lord, and we will be servants to Pharao.
Ils répondirent: "Tu nous rends la vie! Puissions-nous trouver grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur et nous resterons serfs de Pharaon."
26 And Joseph appointed it to them for an ordinance until this day; to reserve a fifth part for Pharao, on the land of Egypt, except only the land of the priests, that was not Pharao's.
Joseph imposa au sol de l’Égypte cette contribution, qui subsiste encore, d’un cinquième pour Pharaon. Le domaine des prêtres seuls était excepté, il ne relevait point de Pharaon.
27 And Israel lived in Egypt, in the land of Gesem, and they gained an inheritance upon it; and they increased and multiplied very greatly.
Israël s’établit donc dans le pays d’Égypte, dans la province de Gessen; ils en demeurèrent possesseurs, y crûrent et y multiplièrent prodigieusement.
28 And Jacob survived seventeen years in the land of Egypt; and Jacob's days of the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven years.
Jacob vécut dans le pays d’Égypte dix sept ans; la durée de la vie de Jacob fut donc de cent quarante-sept années.
29 and the days of Israel drew near for him to die: and he called his son Joseph, and said to him, If I have found favor before you, put your hand under my thigh, and you shall execute mercy and truth toward me, so as not to bury me in Egypt.
Les jours d’Israël approchant de leur terme, il manda son fils Joseph et lui dit: "Si tu as quelque affection pour moi, mets, je te prie, ta main sous ma hanche pour attester que tu agiras envers moi avec bonté et fidélité, en ne m’ensevelissant point en Egypte.
30 But I will sleep with my fathers, and you shall carry me up out of Egypt, and bury me in their sepulchre. And he said, I will do according to your word.
Quand je dormirai avec mes pères, tu me transporteras hors de l’Égypte et tu m’enseveliras dans leur sépulcre." Il répondit: "Je ferai selon ta parole."
31 And he said, Swear to me; and he swore to him. And Israel did reverence, leaning on the top of his staff.
Il reprit: "Jure-le-moi" et il le lui jura; et Israël s’inclina sur le chevet du lit.
