Jezekiel 19

1 Moreover do you take up a lamentation for the prince of Israel,

Or toi, entonne une complainte sur les princes d’Israël:

2 and say, Why is your mother become a whelp in the midst of lions? in the midst of lions she has multiplied her whelps.

Tu diras: Comme ta mère était une lionne, accroupie parmi des lions! Au milieu des lionceaux elle élevait ses petits.

3 And one of her whelps sprang forth; he became a lion, and learned to take prey, he devoured men.

Elle donna la primauté à un de ses petits; il devint un lionceau; Il apprit à déchirer la proie, il dévora des hommes.

4 And the nations heard a report of him; he was caught in their pit, and they brought him into the land of Egypt in chains.

Les nations connurent sa renommée: il fut pris dans leurs fosses, et ils l’amenèrent au moyen de crochets au pays d’Egypte.

5 And she saw that he was driven away from her, [and] her hope [of him] perished, and she took another of her whelps; she made him a lion.

Lorsqu’elle vit son espoir évanoui, perdu, elle prit un autre de ses petits, elle en fit un lionceau.

6 And he went up and down in the midst of lions, he became a lion, and learned to take prey, he devoured men.

Il circula au milieu des lions, devint un jeune lion; il apprit à déchirer la proie, dévora des hommes.

7 And he prowled in his boldness and laid waste their cities, and made the land desolate, and the fullness of it, by the voice of his roaring.

Il envahit leurs palais et dévasta leurs villes, et le pays avec tout ce qu’il contient fut atterré au bruit de ses rugissements.

8 Then the nations set upon him from the countries round about, and they spread their nets upon him: he was taken in their pit.

Des provinces, tout autour, les nations donnèrent contre lui, et elles étendirent sur lui leurs filets; il fut pris dans leurs fosses.

9 And they put him in chains and in a cage, [and] he came to the king of Babylon; and he cast him into prison, that his voice should not be heard on the mountains of Israel.

Au moyen de crochets ils l’entraînèrent dans une cage et on l’amena au roi de Babel; on le conduisit dans des forteresses, pour que sa voix cessât de se faire entendre sur les montagnes d’Israël.

10 Your mother was as a vine and as a blossom on a pomegranate tree, planted by water: her fruit and her shoot abounded by reason of much water.

Ta mère, quand tu fus dans ta sève, a été comme une vigne, plantée près des eaux; elle est devenue florissante et touffue grâce aux eaux abondantes.

11 And she became a rod for a tribe of princes, and was elevated in her bulk in the midst of [other] trees, and she saw her bulk in the multitude of her branches.

Elle eut des rameaux vigoureux, dignes d’être des sceptres de souverains; sa stature s’éleva au-dessus des branches épaisses; elle fut imposante par sa hauteur, par l’abondance de ses ceps.

12 But she was broken down in wrath, she was cast upon the ground, and the east wind dried up her choice [branches]: vengeance came upon them, and the rod of her strength was withered; fire consumed it.

Mais elle fut déracinée avec fureur, jetée à terre, et le vent d’est dessécha son fruit; ses rameaux vigoureux furent arrachés et desséchés, le feu les a consumés.

13 And now they have planted her in the wilderness, in a dry land.

Et maintenant elle est plantée dans le désert, dans un pays aride et altéré.

14 And fire is gone out of a rod of her choice [boughs], and has devoured her; and there was no rod of strength in her. Her race is become a parable of lamentation, and it shall be for a lamentation.

Un feu a jailli de son tronc aux nombreuses branches, a consumé son fruit, et elle n’eut plus de rameau vigoureux, de sceptre pour régner: c’est une complainte, et c’est devenu une complainte."
