Luke 1
1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
Plusieurs ayant entrepris d'écrire l'histoire des événements qui se sont accomplis parmi nous,
2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
d'après ce que nous ont enseigné ceux qui en ont été les témoins oculaires dès le commencement, et qui sont devenus les ministres de la Parole,
3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
j'ai cru devoir aussi, après m'être soigneusement enquis de tous les faits, dès leur origine, te les raconter dans leur ordre, excellent Théophile,
4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
afin que tu reconnaisses la vérité des récits qui ont fait la matière de ton instruction.
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judæa, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife [was] of the daughters of Aaron, and her name [was] Elisabeth.
Il y avait du temps d'Hérode, roi de Judée, un sacrificateur nommé Zacharie; il appartenait à la classe d'Abia, et sa femme, qui était une fille d'Aaron, se nommait Elisabeth.
6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
Ils étaient tous deux justes devant Dieu, et observaient tous les commandements et ordonnances du Seigneur, de manière à être sans reproches.
7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were [now] well stricken in years.
Ils n'avaient point d'enfants, parce qu'Élisabeth était stérile; et ils étaient l'un et l'autre avancés en âge.
8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,
Quand vint le tour de sa classe, et qu'il dut officier devant Dieu,
9 According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
il fut désigné par le sort, selon les usages du sacerdoce, pour aller offrir les parfums dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur.
10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
Pendant que tout le peuple était dehors en prières, à l'heure qu'on offre les parfums,
11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
un ange du Seigneur lui apparut debout, à droite de l'autel des parfums.
12 And when Zacharias saw [him], he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
Zacharie fut troublé à sa vue, et la frayeur s'empara de lui;
13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
mais l'ange lui dit: «Ne crains point, Zacharie, car ta prière a été exaucée: Elisabeth, ta femme, te donnera un fils, et tu le nommeras Jean;
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
il sera pour toi un sujet de joie et d'allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance.
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
Car il sera grand devant le Seigneur; il ne boira ni vin, ni liqueur enivrante, et il sera rempli du Saint-Esprit dès le sein de sa mère;
16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
il convertira bien des fils d'Israël au Seigneur leur Dieu,
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
et lui-même marchera devant Dieu dans l'esprit et la vertu d'Élie, pour «ramener les coeurs des pères vers les enfants, » et les rebelles aux sentiments des justes, afin de préparer au Seigneur un peuple bien disposé.»
18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
Zacharie dit à l'ange: «A quoi reconnaîtrai-je la vérité de ce que tu m'annonces? car je suis vieux, et ma femme est déjà avancée en âge.»
19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
L'ange lui répondit: «Je suis Gabriel, je me tiens devant Dieu; j'ai été envoyé pour te parler, et pour t'annoncer ces heureuses nouvelles.
20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
Voici, tu seras muet, et tu ne pourras plus parler jusqu'au jour où se réalisera cette promesse, parce que tu n'as pas ajouté foi à mes paroles, qui s'accompliront en leur temps.»
21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
Cependant le peuple attendait Zacharie, et s'étonnait qu'il demeurât aussi longtemps dans le sanctuaire.
22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
Quand Zacharie sortit, il ne pouvait leur parler; et ils comprirent qu'il avait eu une vision dans le sanctuaire, ce que lui-même confirmait par signes: et il resta muet.
23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
Lorsque les jours de son office furent accomplis, il s'en retourna chez lui.
24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
Quelque temps après, Elisabeth, sa femme, devint enceinte, et elle se tint cachée durant cinq mois, «parce que, disait-elle,
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on [me], to take away my reproach among men.
c'est une grâce cachée que le Seigneur m'a faite, quand il a daigné ôter l'opprobre qui pesait sur moi aux yeux des hommes.»
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
Au sixième mois, Dieu envoya l'ange Gabriel dans une ville de Galilée, appelée Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name [was] Mary.
vers une vierge fiancée à un homme de la famille de David, nommé Joseph. Cette vierge se nommait Marie.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, [thou that art] highly favoured, the Lord [is] with thee: blessed [art] thou among women.
L'ange lui dit en entrant: «Je te salue, toi qui es l'objet d'une grande grâce; le Seigneur est avec toi.»
29 And when she saw [him], she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
Cette parole la troubla; et elle se demandait ce que pouvait bien être cette salutation.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
L'ange lui dit: «Ne crains point, Marie, car tu as trouvé grâce devant Dieu.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
Tu concevras en ton sein, et tu enfanteras un fils; et tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
Il sera grand; on l'appellera Fils du Très-Haut; le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David, son père;
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (aiōn g165)
il régnera éternellement sur la maison de Jacob, et son règne n'aura point de fin.» (aiōn g165)
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
Mais Marie dit à l'ange: «Comment cela se fera-t-il, puisque je ne connais point d'homme?»
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
L'ange lui répondit: «Le Saint-Esprit viendra sur toi, et la puissance du Très-Haut te couvrira de son ombre; aussi l'être saint qui naîtra de toi, sera-t-il appelé Fils de Dieu.
36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
Et voici, Elisabeth, ta parente, a, elle aussi, conçu un fils dans sa vieillesse, et celle qu'on appelait stérile est dans son sixième mois:
37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
rien ne sera impossible à Dieu.»
38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Marie lui dit: «Je suis la servante du Seigneur; qu'il me soit fait selon ta parole.» Et l'ange la quitta.
39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
Dans ce même temps Marie partit, et s'en alla en hâte au pays des montagnes, dans une ville de Juda;
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
étant entrée dans la maison de Zacharie, elle salua Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
Dès qu'Elisabeth eut entendu la salutation de Marie, son enfant tressaillit dans son sein, et elle fut remplie du Saint-Esprit.
42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed [art] thou among women, and blessed [is] the fruit of thy womb.
Elle s'écria à haute voix: «Tu es bénie entre les femmes, et le fruit que tu portes est béni.
43 And whence [is] this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Et d'où me vient cet honneur, que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne me visiter?
44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
Car, sitôt que la voix de ta salutation a frappé mon oreille, mon enfant a tressailli de joie dans mon sein.
45 And blessed [is] she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
Heureuse celle qui a cru à l'accomplissement de ce que le Seigneur lui a fait annoncer!»
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
Et Marie dit: «Mon âme glorifie le Seigneur,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
et mon esprit est ravi de joie en Dieu, mon Sauveur,
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
parce qu'il a jeté les yeux sur la bassesse de sa servante. «Car désormais toutes les générations me diront bienheureuse,
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy [is] his name.
parce que le Tout-Puissant a fait en moi de grandes choses: son nom est saint,
50 And his mercy [is] on them that fear him from generation to generation.
et sa miséricorde détend d'âge en âge sur ceux qui le craignent.
51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
Il a déployé la force de son bras; il a dissipé ceux qui s'enorgueillissaient dans les pensées de leurs coeurs;
52 He hath put down the mighty from [their] seats, and exalted them of low degree.
il a renversé les puissants de leurs trônes, et il a élevé les petits;
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
il a comblé de biens les affamés, et il a renvoyé les riches les mains vides.
54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of [his] mercy;
Il s'est intéressé à Israël son serviteur, et, comme il l'avait dit à nos pères, il s'est souvenu de sa miséricorde
envers Abraham et sa postérité, pour toujours.» (aiōn g165)
56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
Marie demeura avec Elisabeth, environ trois mois, puis elle s'en retourna dans sa maison.
57 Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
Cependant Elisabeth, étant arrivée à son terme, mit au monde un fils.
58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
Ses voisins et ses parents, ayant appris la grâce signalée que le Seigneur lui avait faite, l'en félicitèrent.
59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
Le huitième jour, on vint circoncire l’enfant, et on lui donnait le nom de Zacharie, qui était le nom de son père,
60 And his mother answered and said, Not [so]; but he shall be called John.
lorsque sa mère prit la parole, et dit: «Non; il s'appellera Jean.»
61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
Ils lui dirent: «Il n'y a personne dans ta famille qui porte ce nom-là; »
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
et ils demandèrent par signes au père de l'enfant, comment il voulait qu'on le nommât.
63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
Zacharie ayant demandé des tablettes, écrivit ces mots: «Son nom est Jean; » et ils en furent tous étonnés.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue [loosed], and he spake, and praised God.
Au même instant, sa bouche s'ouvrit, sa langue se délia, il parlait, bénissant Dieu.
65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judæa.
La crainte saisit tous les habitants des alentours, et, dans tout le pays des montagnes de la Judée, on parla de ces événements.
66 And all they that heard [them] laid [them] up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
Tous ceux qui les apprirent, les serraient dans leur coeur en disant: «Que sera-donc cet enfant?» En effet, la main du Seigneur était avec lui.
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
Zacharie, son père, fut rempli du Saint-Esprit, et il prophétisa en ces termes:
68 Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
«Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, de ce qu'il a visité et racheté son peuple.
69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
Il nous a suscité une Puissance libératrice dans la maison de David, son serviteur,
70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: (aiōn g165)
selon qu'il en avait parlé par la bouche de ses saints prophètes des temps anciens, (aiōn g165)
71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
une Puissance qui nous délivrera de nos ennemis, et des mains de tous ceux qui nous haïssent.
72 To perform the mercy [promised] to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
Il a voulu faire miséricorde à nos pères, et il s'est souvenu de sa sainte alliance,
73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
selon la promesse qu'il avait faite par serment à Abraham, notre père,
74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
de nous donner, lorsque nous serions délivrés des mains de nos ennemis, de le servir sans crainte,
75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
en pratiquant sous son regard la sainteté et la justice tous les jours de notre vie.
76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
«Et toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut; car tu marcheras devant la face du Seigneur, pour préparer ses voies,
77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
afin qu'il donne à son peuple la connaissance du salut par le pardon de ses péchés.
78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
Car notre Dieu, dans ses tendres compassions, a fait lever d'en haut, sur nous, un soleil
79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and [in] the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
qui doit éclairer ceux qui sont dans les ténèbres et dans l'ombre de la mort, afin de diriger nos pas dans le chemin de la paix.»
80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
Or, le petit enfant croissait, il se fortifiait en esprit; et il se tenait dans les déserts, jusqu'au jour où il se fit connaître à Israël.
