Luke 14
1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.
ある安息日に、食事をしようとして、パリサイ派のある指導者の家にはいられたとき、みんながじっとイエスを見つめていた。
2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.
そこには、イエスの真正面に、水腫をわずらっている人がいた。
3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?
イエスは、律法の専門家、パリサイ人たちに、「安息日に病気を直すことは正しいことですか、それともよくないことですか。」と言われた。
4 And they held their peace. And he took [him], and healed him, and let him go;
しかし、彼らは黙っていた。それで、イエスはその人を抱いて直してやり、そしてお帰しになった。
5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?
それから、彼らに言われた。「自分の息子や牛が井戸に落ちたのに、安息日だからといって、すぐに引き上げてやらない者があなたがたのうちにいるでしょうか。」
6 And they could not answer him again to these things.
彼らは答えることができなかった。
7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,
招かれた人々が上座を選んでいる様子に気づいておられたイエスは、彼らにたとえを話された。
8 When thou art bidden of any [man] to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;
「婚礼の披露宴に招かれたときには、上座にすわってはいけません。あなたより身分の高い人が、招かれているかもしれないし、
9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
あなたやその人を招いた人が来て、『この人に席を譲ってください。』とあなたに言うなら、そのときあなたは恥をかいて、末席に着かなければならないでしょう。
10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
招かれるようなことがあって、行ったなら、末席に着きなさい。そうしたら、あなたを招いた人が来て、『どうぞもっと上席にお進みください。』と言うでしょう。そのときは、満座の中で面目を施すことになります。
11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
なぜなら、だれでも自分を高くする者は低くされ、自分を低くする者は高くされるからです。」
12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor [thy] rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
また、イエスは、自分を招いてくれた人にも、こう話された。「昼食や夕食のふるまいをするなら、友人、兄弟、親族、近所の金持ちなどを呼んではいけません。でないと、今度は彼らがあなたを招いて、お返しすることになるからです。
13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
祝宴を催すばあいには、むしろ、貧しい人、不具の人、足なえ、盲人たちを招きなさい。
14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
その人たちはお返しができないので、あなたは幸いです。義人の復活のときお返しを受けるからです。」
15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed [is] he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
イエスといっしょに食卓に着いていた客のひとりはこれを聞いて、イエスに、「神の国で食事する人は、何と幸いなことでしょう。」と言った。
16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
するとイエスはこう言われた。 「ある人が盛大な宴会を催し、大ぜいの人を招いた。
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
宴会の時刻になったのでしもべをやり、招いておいた人々に、『さあ、おいでください。もうすっかり、用意ができましたから。』と言わせた。
18 And they all with one [consent] began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
ところが、みな同じように断わり始めた。最初の人はこう言った。『畑を買ったので、どうしても見に出かけなければなりません。すみませんが、お断わりさせていただきます。』
19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
もうひとりはこう言った。『五くびきの牛を買ったので、それをためしに行くところです。すみませんが、お断わりさせていただきます。』
20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
また、別の人はこう言った。『結婚したので、行くことができません。』
21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
しもべは帰って、このことを主人に報告した。すると、おこった主人は、そのしもべに言った。『急いで町の大通りや路地に出て行って、貧しい人や、不具の人や、盲人や、足なえをここに連れて来なさい。』
22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
しもべは言った。『ご主人さま。仰せのとおりにいたしました。でも、まだ席があります。』
23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel [them] to come in, that my house may be filled.
主人は言った。『街道や垣根のところに出かけて行って、この家がいっぱいになるように、無理にでも人々を連れて来なさい。
24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.
言っておくが、あの招待されていた人たちの中で、私の食事を味わう者は、ひとりもいないのです。』」
25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,
さて、大ぜいの群衆が、イエスといっしょに歩いていたが、イエスは彼らのほうに向いて言われた。
26 If any [man] come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
「わたしのもとに来て、自分の父、母、妻、子、兄弟、姉妹、そのうえ自分のいのちまでも憎まない者は、わたしの弟子になることができません。
27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
自分の十字架を負ってわたしについて来ない者は、わたしの弟子になることはできません。
28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have [sufficient] to finish [it]?
塔を築こうとするとき、まずすわって、完成に十分な金があるかどうか、その費用を計算しない者が、あなたがたのうちにひとりでもあるでしょうか。
29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish [it], all that behold [it] begin to mock him,
基礎を築いただけで完成できなかったら、見ていた人はみな彼をあざ笑って、
30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
『この人は、建て始めはしたものの、完成できなかった。』と言うでしょう。
31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
また、どんな王でも、ほかの王と戦いを交えようとするときは、二万人を引き連れて向かって来る敵を、一万人で迎え撃つことができるかどうかを、まずすわって、考えずにいられましょうか。
32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
もし見込みがなければ、敵がまだ遠くに離れている間に、使者を送って講和を求めるでしょう。
33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
そういうわけで、あなたがたはだれでも、自分の財産全部を捨てないでは、わたしの弟子になることはできません。
34 Salt [is] good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
ですから、塩は良いものですが、もしその塩が塩けをなくしたら、何によってそれに味をつけるのでしょうか。
35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; [but] men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
土地にも肥やしにも役立たず、外に投げ捨てられてしまいます。聞く耳のある人は聞きなさい。」
