John 11
1 Now a certain [man] was sick, [named] Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
さて、ある人が病気にかかっていた。ラザロといって、マリヤとその姉妹マルタとの村の出で、ベタニヤの人であった。
2 (It was [that] Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
このマリヤは、主に香油を塗り、髪の毛でその足をぬぐったマリヤであって、彼女の兄弟ラザロが病んでいたのである。
3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
そこで姉妹たちは、イエスのところに使いを送って、言った。「主よ。ご覧ください。あなたが愛しておられる者が病気です。」
4 When Jesus heard [that], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
イエスはこれを聞いて、言われた。「この病気は死で終わるだけのものではなく、神の栄光のためのものです。神の子がそれによって栄光を受けるためです。」
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
イエスはマルタとその姉妹とラザロとを愛しておられた。
6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
そのようなわけで、イエスは、ラザロが病んでいることを聞かれたときも、そのおられた所になお二日とどまられた。
7 Then after that saith he to [his] disciples, Let us go into Judæa again.
その後、イエスは、「もう一度ユダヤに行こう。」と弟子たちに言われた。
8 [His] disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
弟子たちはイエスに言った。「先生。たった今ユダヤ人たちが、あなたを石打ちにしようとしていたのに、またそこにおいでになるのですか。」
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
イエスは答えられた。「昼間は十二時間あるでしょう。だれでも、昼間歩けば、つまずくことはありません。この世の光を見ているからです。
10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
しかし、夜歩けばつまずきます。光がその人のうちにないからです。」
11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
イエスは、このように話され、それから、弟子たちに言われた。「わたしたちの友ラザロは眠っています。しかし、わたしは彼を眠りからさましに行くのです。」
12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
そこで弟子たちはイエスに言った。「主よ。眠っているのなら、彼は助かるでしょう。」
13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
しかし、イエスは、ラザロの死のことを言われたのである。だが、彼らは眠った状態のことを言われたものと思った。
14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
そこで、イエスはそのとき、はっきりと彼らに言われた。「ラザロは死んだのです。
15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
わたしは、あなたがたのため、すなわちあなたがたが信じるためには、わたしがその場に居合わせなかったことを喜んでいます。さあ、彼のところへ行きましょう。」
16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
そこで、デドモと呼ばれるトマスが、弟子の仲間に言った。「私たちも行って、主といっしょに死のうではないか。」
17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had [lain] in the grave four days already.
それで、イエスがおいでになってみると、ラザロは墓の中に入れられて四日もたっていた。
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
ベタニヤはエルサレムに近く、三千メートルほど離れた所にあった。
19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
大ぜいのユダヤ人がマルタとマリヤのところに来ていた。その兄弟のことについて慰めるためであった。
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat [still] in the house.
マルタは、イエスが来られたと聞いて迎えに行った。マリヤは家ですわっていた。
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
マルタはイエスに向かって言った。「主よ。もしここにいてくださったなら、私の兄弟は死ななかったでしょうに。
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give [it] thee.
今でも私は知っております。あなたが神にお求めになることは何でも、神はあなたにお与えになります。」
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
イエスは彼女に言われた。「あなたの兄弟はよみがえります。」
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
マルタはイエスに言った。「私は、終わりの日のよみがえりの時に、彼がよみがえることを知っております。」
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
イエスは言われた。「わたしは、よみがえりです。いのちです。わたしを信じる者は、死んでも生きるのです。
また、生きていてわたしを信じる者は、決して死ぬことがありません。このことを信じますか。」 (aiōn g165)
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
彼女はイエスに言った。「はい。主よ。私は、あなたが世に来られる神の子キリストである、と信じております。」
28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
こう言ってから、帰って行って、姉妹マリヤを呼び、「先生が見えています。あなたを呼んでおられます。」とそっと言った。
29 As soon as she heard [that], she arose quickly, and came unto him.
マリヤはそれを聞くと、すぐ立ち上がって、イエスのところに行った。
30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
さてイエスは、まだ村にはいらないで、マルタが出迎えた場所におられた。
31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
マリヤとともに家にいて、彼女を慰めていたユダヤ人たちは、マリヤが急いで立ち上がって出て行くのを見て、マリヤが墓に泣きに行くのだろうと思い、彼女について行った。
32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
マリヤは、イエスのおられた所に来て、お目にかかると、その足もとにひれ伏して言った。「主よ。もしここにいてくださったなら、私の兄弟は死ななかったでしょうに。」
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
そこでイエスは、彼女が泣き、彼女といっしょに来たユダヤ人たちも泣いているのをご覧になると、霊の憤りを覚え、心の動揺を感じて、
34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
言われた。「彼をどこに置きましたか。」彼らはイエスに言った。「主よ。来てご覧ください。」
35 Jesus wept.
イエスは涙を流された。
36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
そこで、ユダヤ人たちは言った。「ご覧なさい。主はどんなに彼を愛しておられたことか。」
37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
しかし、「盲人の目をあけたこの方が、あの人を死なせないでおくことはできなかったのか。」と言う者もいた。
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
そこでイエスは、またも心のうちに憤りを覚えながら、墓に来られた。墓はほら穴であって、石がそこに立てかけてあった。
39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been [dead] four days.
イエスは言われた。「その石を取りのけなさい。」死んだ人の姉妹マルタは言った。「主よ。もう臭くなっておりましょう。四日になりますから。」
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
イエスは彼女に言われた。「もしあなたが信じるなら、あなたは神の栄光を見る、とわたしは言ったではありませんか。」
41 Then they took away the stone [from the place] where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up [his] eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
そこで、彼らは石を取りのけた。イエスは目を上げて、言われた。「父よ。わたしの願いを聞いてくださったことを感謝いたします。
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
わたしは、あなたがいつもわたしの願いを聞いてくださることを知っておりました。しかしわたしは、回りにいる群衆のために、この人々が、あなたがわたしをお遣わしになったことを信じるようになるために、こう申したのです。」
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
そして、イエスはそう言われると、大声で叫ばれた。「ラザロよ。出て来なさい。」
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
すると、死んでいた人が、手と足を長い布で巻かれたままで出て来た。彼の顔は布切れで包まれていた。イエスは彼らに言われた。「ほどいてやって、帰らせなさい。」
45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
そこで、マリヤのところに来ていて、イエスがなさったことを見た多くのユダヤ人が、イエスを信じた。
46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
しかし、そのうちの幾人かは、パリサイ人たちのところへ行って、イエスのなさったことを告げた。
47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
そこで、祭司長とパリサイ人たちは議会を召集して言った。「われわれは何をしているのか。あの人が多くのしるしを行なっているというのに。
48 If we let him thus alone, all [men] will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
もしあの人をこのまま放っておくなら、すべての人があの人を信じるようになる。そうなると、ローマ人がやって来て、われわれの土地も国民も奪い取ることになる。」
49 And one of them, [named] Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
しかし、彼らのうちのひとりで、その年の大祭司であったカヤパが、彼らに言った。「あなたがたは全然何もわかっていない。
50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
ひとりの人が民の代わりに死んで、国民全体が滅びないほうが、あなたがたにとって得策だということも、考えに入れていない。」
51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
ところで、このことは彼が自分から言ったのではなくて、その年の大祭司であったので、イエスが国民のために死のうとしておられること、
52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
また、ただ国民のためだけでなく、散らされている神の子たちを一つに集めるためにも死のうとしておられることを、預言したのである。
53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
そこで彼らは、その日から、イエスを殺すための計画を立てた。
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
そのために、イエスはもはやユダヤ人たちの間を公然と歩くことをしないで、そこから荒野に近い地方に去り、エフライムという町にはいり、弟子たちとともにそこに滞在された。
55 And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
さて、ユダヤ人の過越の祭りが間近であった。多くの人々が、身を清めるために、過越の祭りの前にいなかからエルサレムに上って来た。
56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
彼らはイエスを捜し、宮の中に立って、互いに言った。「あなたがたはどう思いますか。あの方は祭りに来られることはないでしょうか。」
57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew [it], that they might take him.
さて、祭司長、パリサイ人たちはイエスを捕えるために、イエスがどこにいるかを知っている者は届け出なければならないという命令を出していた。
