Deuteronomy 29
1 These [are] the words of the covenant, which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.
Voici les paroles de l’alliance que Yahweh ordonna à Moïse de conclure avec les enfants d’Israël au pays de Moab, outre l’alliance qu’il avait conclue avec eux en Horeb.
2 And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land;
Moïse convoqua tout Israël et leur dit: « Vous avez vu tout ce que Yahweh a fait sous vos yeux, dans le pays d’Égypte, à Pharaon, à tous ses serviteurs et à tout son pays,
3 The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles:
les grandes épreuves que tes yeux ont vues, ces signes et ces grands prodiges.
4 Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.
Mais Yahweh ne vous a pas donné, jusqu’à ce jour, un cœur qui comprenne, des yeux qui voient, des oreilles qui entendent.
5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.
Je vous ai conduits pendant quarante ans dans le désert; vos vêtements ne se sont pas usés sur vous, et ta chaussure ne s’est pas usée à ton pied;
6 Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I [am] the LORD your God.
vous n’avez pas mangé de pain, et vous n’avez bu ni vin ni cervoise, afin que vous puissiez connaître que je suis Yahweh, votre Dieu.
7 And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we smote them:
Vous êtes ainsi arrivés dans ce lieu. Séhon, roi de Hésebon, et Og, roi de Basan, sont sortis à notre rencontre, pour nous combattre, et nous les avons battus.
8 And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half tribe of Manasseh.
Nous avons pris leur pays, et nous l’avons donné en propriété aux Rubénites, aux Gadites et à la moitié de la tribu des Manassites.
9 Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do.
Observez donc les paroles de cette alliance et mettez-les en pratique, afin de réussir dans tout ce que vous ferez.
10 Ye stand this day all of you before the LORD your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, [with] all the men of Israel,
Vous vous présentez tous aujourd’hui devant Yahweh, votre Dieu, vos chefs, vos tribus, vos anciens, vos officiers, tous les hommes d’Israël,
11 Your little ones, your wives, and thy stranger that [is] in thy camp, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water:
vos enfants, vos femmes et l’étranger qui est au milieu de ton camp, depuis celui qui coupe ton bois jusqu’à celui qui puise ton eau:
12 That thou shouldest enter into covenant with the LORD thy God, and into his oath, which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day:
tu te présentes pour entrer dans l’alliance de Yahweh, ton Dieu, et dans son serment, alliance que Yahweh, ton Dieu, conclut en ce jour avec toi,
13 That he may establish thee to day for a people unto himself, and [that] he may be unto thee a God, as he hath said unto thee, and as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
pour t’établir aujourd’hui comme son peuple et être lui-même ton Dieu, comme il te l’a dit et comme il l’a juré à tes pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
14 Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath;
Ce n’est pas avec vous seuls que je conclus cette alliance, et que je fais ce serment;
15 But with [him] that standeth here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with [him] that [is] not here with us this day:
mais c’est avec quiconque se tient ici aujourd’hui avec nous devant Yahweh, notre Dieu, et avec quiconque n’est pas ici avec nous en ce jour.
16 (For ye know how we have dwelt in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the nations which ye passed by;
Vous savez, en effet, comment nous avons habité dans le pays d’Égypte, et comment nous avons passé au milieu des nations parmi lesquelles vous avez passé:
17 And ye have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which [were] among them: )
vous avez vu leurs abominations et leur idoles, bois et pierre, argent et or, qui sont chez elles.
18 Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go [and] serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood;
Qu’il n’y ait donc parmi vous ni homme, ni femme, ni famille, ni tribu, dont le cœur se détourne aujourd’hui de Yahweh, notre Dieu, pour aller servir les dieux de ces nations; qu’il n’y ait pas parmi vous de racine produisant du poison et de l’absinthe.
19 And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add drunkenness to thirst:
Que personne, en entendant les paroles de ce serment, ne se flatte dans son cœur, en disant: « J’aurai la paix, alors même que je marcherai dans l’endurcissement de mon cœur, » de sorte que celui qui est assouvi entraîne celui qui a soif.
20 The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.
Yahweh ne consentira pas à pardonner à cet homme; mais alors la colère et la jalousie de Yahweh s’enflammeront contre cet homme, toutes les malédictions écrites dans ce livre reposeront sur lui, et Yahweh effacera son nom de dessous les cieux.
21 And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law:
Yahweh le séparera, pour le livrer au malheur, de toutes les tribus d’Israël, selon toutes les malédictions de l’alliance écrite dans ce livre de la loi.
22 So that the generation to come of your children that shall rise up after you, and the stranger that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses which the LORD hath laid upon it;
La génération à venir, vos enfants qui naîtront après vous, et l’étranger qui viendra d’une terre lointaine, — à la vue des plaies de ce pays et de ses maladies, dont Yahweh l’aura frappé,
23 [And that] the whole land thereof [is] brimstone, and salt, [and] burning, [that] it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:
du soufre et du sel, de l’embrasement de toute cette terre, qui ne sera pas ensemencée, ne produira pas de fruits, sur laquelle ne croîtra aucune herbe, comme il arriva au bouleversement de Sodome, de Gomorrhe, d’Adama et de Seboïm, que Yahweh bouleversa dans sa colère et dans sa fureur, —
24 Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what [meaneth] the heat of this great anger?
toutes ces nations diront: « Pourquoi Yahweh a-t-il ainsi traité ce pays? D’où vient l’ardeur de cette grande colère? »
25 Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt:
Et l’on dira: « C’est parce qu’ils ont abandonné l’alliance de Yahweh, le Dieu de leurs pères, qu’il avait conclue avec eux, lorsqu’il les fit sortir du pays d’Égypte;
26 For they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not, and [whom] he had not given unto them:
ils sont allés servir d’autres dieux et se prosterner devant eux, des dieux qu’ils ne connaissaient pas et que Yahweh ne leur avait pas donnés en partage.
27 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book:
La colère de Yahweh s’est enflammée contre ce pays, et il a fait venir sur lui toutes les malédictions écrites dans ce livre.
28 And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as [it is] this day.
Yahweh les a arrachés de leur sol avec colère, avec fureur et avec une grande indignation, et il les a jetés sur une autre terre, comme on le voit aujourd’hui. »
29 The secret [things belong] unto the LORD our God: but those [things which are] revealed [belong] unto us and to our children for ever, that [we] may do all the words of this law.
Les choses cachées sont à Yahweh, notre Dieu; les choses révélées sont pour nous et pour nos enfants, à jamais, afin que nous mettions en pratique toutes les paroles de cette loi.
