Acts 8
1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judæa and Samaria, except the apostles.
サウロは、ステパノを殺すことに賛成していた。その日、エルサレムの教会に対する激しい迫害が起こり、使徒たち以外の者はみな、ユダヤとサマリヤの諸地方に散らされた。
2 And devout men carried Stephen [to his burial], and made great lamentation over him.
敬虔な人たちはステパノを葬り、彼のために非常に悲しんだ。
3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed [them] to prison.
サウロは教会を荒らし、家々にはいって、男も女も引きずり出し、次々に牢に入れた。
4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.
他方、散らされた人たちは、みことばを宣べながら、巡り歩いた。
5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.
ピリポはサマリヤの町に下って行き、人々にキリストを宣べ伝えた。
6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
群衆はピリポの話を聞き、その行なっていたしるしを見て、みなそろって、彼の語ることに耳を傾けた。
7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed [with them]: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
汚れた霊につかれた多くの人たちからは、その霊が大声で叫んで出て行くし、大ぜいの中風の者や足のきかない者は直ったからである。
8 And there was great joy in that city.
それでその町に大きな喜びが起こった。
9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
ところが、この町にシモンという人がいた。彼は以前からこの町で魔術を行なって、サマリヤの人々を驚かし、自分は偉大な者だと話していた。
10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.
小さな者から大きな者に至るまで、あらゆる人々が彼に関心を抱き、「この人こそ、大能と呼ばれる、神の力だ。」と言っていた。
11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.
人々が彼に関心を抱いたのは、長い間、その魔術に驚かされていたからである。
12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
しかし、ピリポが神の国とイエス・キリストの御名について宣べるのを信じた彼らは、男も女もバプテスマを受けた。
13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
シモン自身も信じて、バプテスマを受け、いつもピリポについていた。そして、しるしとすばらしい奇蹟が行なわれるのを見て、驚いていた。
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
さて、エルサレムにいる使徒たちは、サマリヤの人々が神のことばを受け入れたと聞いて、ペテロとヨハネを彼らのところへ遣わした。
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
ふたりは下って行って、人々が聖霊を受けるように祈った。
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
彼らは主イエスの御名によってバプテスマを受けていただけで、聖霊がまだだれにも下っておられなかったからである。
17 Then laid they [their] hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
ふたりが彼らの上に手を置くと、彼らは聖霊を受けた。
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
使徒たちが手を置くと聖霊が与えられるのを見たシモンは、使徒たちのところに金を持って来て、
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
「私が手を置いた者がだれでも聖霊を受けられるように、この権威を私にも下さい。」と言った。
20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
ペテロは彼に向かって言った。「あなたの金は、あなたとともに滅びるがよい。あなたは金で神の賜物を手に入れようと思っているからです。
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
あなたは、このことについては何の関係もないし、それにあずかることもできません。あなたの心が神の前に正しくないからです。
22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.
だから、この悪事を悔い改めて、主に祈りなさい。あるいは、心に抱いた思いが赦されるかもしれません。
23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and [in] the bond of iniquity.
あなたはまだ苦い胆汁と不義のきずなの中にいることが、私にはよくわかっています。」
24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.
シモンは答えて言った。「あなたがたの言われた事が何も私に起こらないように、私のために主に祈ってください。」
25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
このようにして、使徒たちはおごそかにあかしをし、また主のことばを語って後、エルサレムへの帰途につき、サマリヤ人の多くの村でも福音を宣べ伝えた。
26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
ところが、主の使いがピリポに向かってこう言った。「立って南へ行き、エルサレムからガザに下る道に出なさい。」（このガザは今、荒れ果てている。）
27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
そこで、彼は立って出かけた。すると、そこに、エチオピヤ人の女王カンダケの高官で、女王の財産全部を管理していた宦官のエチオピヤ人がいた。彼は礼拝のためエルサレムに上り、
28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
いま帰る途中であった。彼は馬車に乗って、預言者イザヤの書を読んでいた。
29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
御霊がピリポに「近寄って、あの馬車といっしょに行きなさい。」と言われた。
30 And Philip ran thither to [him], and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
そこでピリポが走って行くと、預言者イザヤの書を読んでいるのが聞こえたので、「あなたは、読んでいることが、わかりますか。」と言った。
31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
すると、その人は、「導く人がなければ、どうしてわかりましょう。」と言った。そして馬車に乗っていっしょにすわるように、ピリポに頼んだ。
32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
彼が読んでいた聖書の個所には、こう書いてあった。 「ほふり場に連れて行かれる羊のように、 また、黙々として 毛を刈る者の前に立つ小羊のように、 彼は口を開かなかった。
33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
彼は、卑しめられ、そのさばきも取り上げられた。 彼の時代のことを、だれが話すことができようか。 彼のいのちは地上から取り去られたのである。」
34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
宦官はピリポに向かって言った。「預言者はだれについて、こう言っているのですか。どうか教えてください。自分についてですか。それとも、だれかほかの人についてですか。」
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
ピリポは口を開き、この聖句から始めて、イエスのことを彼に宣べ伝えた。
36 And as they went on [their] way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, [here is] water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
道を進んで行くうちに、水のある所に来たので、宦官は言った。「ご覧なさい。水があります。私がバプテスマを受けるのに、何かさしつかえがあるでしょうか。」
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
そして馬車を止めさせ、ピリポも宦官も水の中へ降りて行き、ピリポは宦官にバプテスマを授けた。
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
水から上がって来たとき、主の霊がピリポを連れ去られたので、宦官はそれから後彼を見なかったが、喜びながら帰って行った。
40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Cæsarea.
それからピリポはアゾトに現われ、すべての町々を通って福音を宣べ伝え、カイザリヤに行った。
