2 Corinthians 10
1 Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence [am] base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:
さて、私パウロは、キリストの柔和と寛容をもって、あなたがたにお勧めします。私は、あなたがたの間にいて、面と向かっているときはおとなしく、離れているあなたがたに対しては強気な者です。
2 But I beseech [you], that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
しかし、私は、あなたがたのところに行くときには、私たちを肉に従って歩んでいるかのように考える人々に対して勇敢にふるまおうと思っているその確信によって、強気にふるまうことがなくて済むように願っています。
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
私たちは肉にあって歩んではいても、肉に従って戦ってはいません。
4 (For the weapons of our warfare [are] not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; )
私たちの戦いの武器は、肉の物ではなく、神の御前で、要塞をも破るほどに力のあるものです。
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
私たちは、さまざまの思弁と、神の知識に逆らって立つあらゆる高ぶりを打ち砕き、すべてのはかりごとをとりこにしてキリストに服従させ、
6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
また、あなたがたの従順が完全になるとき、あらゆる不従順を罰する用意ができているのです。
7 Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he [is] Christ’s, even so [are] we Christ’s.
あなたがたは、うわべのことだけを見ています。もし自分はキリストに属する者だと確信している人がいるなら、その人は、自分がキリストに属しているように、私たちもまたキリストに属しているということを、もう一度、自分でよく考えなさい。
8 For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
あなたがたを倒すためにではなく、立てるために主が私たちに授けられた権威については、たとい私が多少誇りすぎることがあっても、恥とはならないでしょう。
9 That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.
私は手紙であなたがたをおどしているかのように見られたくありません。
10 For [his] letters, say they, [are] weighty and powerful; but [his] bodily presence [is] weak, and [his] speech contemptible.
彼らは言います。「パウロの手紙は重みがあって力強いが、実際に会ったばあいの彼は弱々しく、その話しぶりは、なっていない。」
11 Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such [will we be] also in deed when we are present.
そういう人はよく承知しておきなさい。離れているときに書く手紙のことばがそうなら、いっしょにいるときの行動もそのとおりです。
12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
私たちは、自己推薦をしているような人たちの中のだれかと自分を同列に置いたり、比較したりしようなどとは思いません。しかし、彼らが自分たちの間で自分を量ったり、比較したりしているのは、知恵のないことなのです。
13 But we will not boast of things without [our] measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
私たちは、限度を越えて誇りはしません。私たちがあなたがたのところまで行くのも、神が私たちに量って割り当ててくださった限度内で行くのです。
14 For we stretch not ourselves beyond [our measure], as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in [preaching] the gospel of Christ:
私たちは、あなたがたのところまでは行かないのに無理に手を伸ばしているのではありません。事実、私たちは、キリストの福音を携えてあなたがたのところにまで行ったのです。
15 Not boasting of things without [our] measure, [that is], of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
私たちは、自分の限度を越えてほかの人の働きを誇ることはしません。ただ、あなたがたの信仰が成長し、あなたがたによって、私たちの領域内で私たちの働きが広げられることを望んでいます。
16 To preach the gospel in the [regions] beyond you, [and] not to boast in another man’s line of things made ready to our hand.
それは、私たちがあなたがたの向こうの地域にまで福音を宣べ伝えるためであって、決して他の人の領域でなされた働きを誇るためではないのです。
17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
誇る者は、主にあって誇りなさい。
18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
自分で自分を推薦する人でなく、主に推薦される人こそ、受け入れられる人です。
