1 Timothy 5
1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat [him] as a father; [and] the younger men as brethren;
年寄りをしかってはいけません。むしろ、父親に対するように勧めなさい。若い人たちには兄弟に対するように、
2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
年とった婦人たちには母親に対するように、若い女たちには真に混じりけのない心で姉妹に対するように勧めなさい。
3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.
やもめの中でもほんとうのやもめを敬いなさい。
4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
しかし、もし、やもめに子どもか孫かがいるなら、まずこれらの者に、自分の家の者に敬愛を示し、親の恩に報いる習慣をつけさせなさい。それが神に喜ばれることです。
5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
ほんとうのやもめで、身寄りのない人は、望みを神に置いて、昼も夜も、絶えず神に願いと祈りをささげていますが、
6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.
自堕落な生活をしているやもめは、生きてはいても、もう死んだ者なのです。
7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.
彼女たちがそしりを受けることのないように、これらのことを命じなさい。
8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
もしも親族、ことに自分の家族を顧みない人がいるなら、その人は信仰を捨てているのであって、不信者よりも悪いのです。
9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man,
やもめとして名簿に載せるのは、六十歳未満の人でなく、ひとりの夫の妻であった人で、
10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.
良い行ないによって認められている人、すなわち、子どもを育て、旅人をもてなし、聖徒の足を洗い、困っている人を助け、すべての良いわざに務め励んだ人としなさい。
11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;
若いやもめは断わりなさい。というのは、彼女たちは、キリストにそむいて情欲に引かれると、結婚したがり、
12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
初めの誓いを捨てたという非難を受けることになるからです。
13 And withal they learn [to be] idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
そのうえ、怠けて、家々を遊び歩くことを覚え、ただ怠けるだけでなく、うわさ話やおせっかいをして、話してはいけないことまで話します。
14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
ですから、私が願うのは、若いやもめは結婚し、子どもを産み、家庭を治め、反対者にそしる機会を与えないことです。
15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.
というのは、すでに、道を踏みはずし、サタンのあとについて行った者があるからです。
16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.
もし信者である婦人の身内にやもめがいたら、その人がそのやもめを助け、教会には負担をかけないようにしなさい。そうすれば、教会はほんとうのやもめを助けることができます。
17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
よく指導の任に当たっている長老は、二重に尊敬を受けるにふさわしいとしなさい。みことばと教えのためにほねおっている長老は特にそうです。
18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer [is] worthy of his reward.
聖書に「穀物をこなしている牛に、くつこを掛けてはいけない。」また、「働き手が報酬を受けることは当然である。」と言われているからです。
19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.
長老に対する訴えは、ふたりか三人の証人がなければ、受理してはいけません。
20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.
罪を犯している者をすべての人の前で責めなさい。ほかの人をも恐れさせるためです。
21 I charge [thee] before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.
私は、神とキリスト・イエスと選ばれた御使いたちとの前で、あなたにおごそかに命じます。これらのことを偏見なしに守り、何事もかたよらないで行ないなさい。
22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.
また、だれにでも軽々しく按手をしてはいけません。また、他人の罪にかかわりを持ってはいけません。自分をきよく保ちなさい。
23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.
これからは水ばかり飲まないで、胃のために、また、たびたび起こる病気のためにも、少量のぶどう酒を用いなさい。
24 Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some [men] they follow after.
ある人たちの罪は、それがさばきを受ける前から、だれの目にも明らかですが、ある人たちの罪は、あとで明らかになります。
25 Likewise also the good works [of some] are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise can not be hid.
同じように、良い行ないは、だれの目にも明らかですが、そうでないばあいでも、いつまでも隠れたままでいることはありません。
