< Psalms 69 >

1 Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.
[For the Chief Musician. To the tune of "Lilies." By David.] Save me, God, for the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
3 I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.
I am weary with my crying. My throat is dry. My eyes fail, looking for my God.
4 They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.
Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head. Those who want to cut me off, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty. I have to restore what I did not take away.
5 O God, you know my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from you.
God, you know my foolishness. My sins aren't hidden from you.
6 Let not them that wait on you, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek you be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.
Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame because of me, LORD of hosts. Do not let those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, God of Israel.
7 Because for your sake I have borne reproach; shame has covered my face.
Because for your sake I suffer insults. Shame has covered my face.
8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an foreigner unto my mother's children.
I have become a stranger to my brothers, a foreigner to my mother's children.
9 For the zeal of your house has eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached you are fallen upon me.
For the zeal of your house consumes me. The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
10 When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.
When I wept and I fasted, it brought me insults.
11 I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.
When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.
12 They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.
Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.
13 But as for me, my prayer is unto you, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of your mercy hear me, in the truth of your salvation.
But as for me, my prayer is to you, LORD, in an acceptable time. God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.
14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.
Deliver me out of the mire, and do not let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters.
15 Let not the flood of waters overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.
Do not let the flood waters overwhelm me, neither let the deep swallow me up. Do not let the pit shut its mouth on me.
16 Hear me, O LORD; for your loving kindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of your tender mercies.
Answer me, LORD, for your loving kindness is good. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, turn to me.
17 And hide not your face from your servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.
Do not hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me speedily.
18 Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.
Draw near to my soul, and redeem it. Ransom me because of my enemies.
19 You have known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before you.
You know how I am insulted, and my shame, and my disgrace. My adversaries are all before you.
20 Reproach has broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
Insults have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; for comforters, but I found none.
21 They gave me also gall for my food; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
They also gave me gall for my food. In my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink.
22 Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.
Let their table before them become a snare, and a retribution, and a trap, and a stumbling block.
23 Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.
Let their eyes be darkened, so that they can't see, and make their backs weak continually.
24 Pour out your indignation upon them, and let your wrathful anger take hold of them.
Pour out your indignation on them. Let the fierceness of your anger overtake them.
25 Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.
Let their habitation be desolate, and let no one dwell in their tents.
26 For they persecute him whom you have smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom you have wounded.
For they persecute him whom you have wounded. They tell of the sorrow of those whom you have hurt.
27 Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into your righteousness.
Charge them with crime upon crime. Do not let them come into your righteousness.
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.
Let them be blotted out of the Book of Life, and not be written with the righteous.
29 But I am poor and sorrowful: let your salvation, O God, set me up on high.
But I am in pain and distress. Let your salvation, God, protect me.
30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31 This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that has horns and hoofs.
It will please the LORD better than an ox, or a bull that has horns and hoofs.
32 The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.
The humble will see it and rejoice. You who seek after God, let your heart live.
33 For the LORD hears the poor, and despises not his prisoners.
For the LORD hears the needy, and doesn't despise his captive people.
34 Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moves therein.
Let heaven and earth praise him; the seas, and everything that moves in them.
35 For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.
For God will save Zion, and build the cities of Judah. They shall settle there, and own it.
36 The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein.
The children also of his servants shall inherit it. Those who love his name shall dwell in it.
