John 19
1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
Tunc ergo apprehendit Pilatus Iesum, et flagellavit.
2 And the soldiers intertwined a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
Et milites plectentes coronam de spinis, imposuerunt capiti eius: et veste purpurea circumdederunt eum.
3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they stroke him with their hands.
Et veniebant ad eum, et dicebant: Ave, rex Iudæorum: et dabant ei alapas.
4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and says unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that all of you may know that I find no fault in him.
Exivit ergo iterum Pilatus foras, et dicit eis: Ecce adduco vobis eum foras, ut cognoscatis quia nullam invenio in eo causam.
5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate says unto them, Behold the man!
(Exivit ergo Iesus portans coronam spineam, et purpureum vestimentum: ) Et dicit eis: Ecce homo.
6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate says unto them, Take all of you him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
Cum ergo vidissent eum Pontifices, et ministri, clamabant, dicentes: Crucifige, crucifige eum. Dicit eis Pilatus: Accipite eum vos, et crucifigite: ego enim non invenio in eo causam.
7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
Responderunt ei Iudæi: Nos legem habemus, et secundum legem debet mori, quia filium Dei se fecit.
8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, (logos) he was the more afraid;
Cum ergo audisset Pilatus hunc sermonem, magis timuit.
9 And went again into the judgment hall, and says unto Jesus, Whence are you? But Jesus gave him no answer.
Et ingressus est prætorium iterum: et dixit ad Iesum: Unde es tu? Iesus autem responsum non dedit ei.
10 Then says Pilate unto him, Speak you not unto me? know you not that I have power to crucify you, and have power to release you?
Dicit ergo ei Pilatus: Mihi non loqueris? nescis quia potestatem habeo crucifigere te, et potestatem habeo dimittere te?
11 Jesus answered, You could have no power at all against me, except it were given you from above: therefore he that delivered me unto you has the greater sin.
Respondit Iesus: Non haberes potestatem adversum me ullam, nisi tibi datum esset desuper. Propterea qui me tradidit tibi, maius peccatum habet.
12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend: whosoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.
Et exinde quærebat Pilatus dimittere eum. Iudæi autem clamabant dicentes: Si hunc dimittis, non es amicus Cæsaris. omnis enim, qui se regem facit, contradicit Cæsari.
13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, (logos) he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
Pilatus autem cum audisset hos sermones, adduxit foras Iesum: et sedit pro tribunali, in loco, qui dicitur Lithostrotos, Hebraice autem Gabbatha.
14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he says unto the Jews, Behold your King!
Erat autem parasceve Paschæ, hora quasi sexta, et dicit Iudæis: Ecce rex vester.
15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate says unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
Illi autem clamabant: Tolle, tolle, crucifige eum. Dicit eis Pilatus: Regem vestrum crucifigam? Responderunt Pontifices: Non habemus Regem, nisi Cæsarem.
16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
Tunc ergo tradidit eis illum ut crucifigeretur. Susceperunt autem Iesum, et eduxerunt.
17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
Et baiulans sibi crucem exivit in eum, qui dicitur Calvariæ, locum, Hebraice autem Golgotha:
18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
ubi crucifixerunt eum, et cum eo alios duos hinc, et hinc, medium autem Iesum.
19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Scripsit autem et titulum Pilatus: et posuit super crucem. Erat autem scriptum: Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudæorum.
20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
Hunc ergo titulum multi Iudæorum legerunt: quia prope civitatem erat locus, ubi crucifixus est Iesus: Et erat scriptum Hebraice, Græce, et Latine.
21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
Dicebant ergo Pilato Pontifices Iudæorum: Noli scribere, Rex Iudæorum: sed quia ipse dixit: Rex sum Iudæorum.
22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
Respondit Pilatus: Quod scripsi, scripsi.
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
Milites ergo cum crucifixissent eum, acceperunt vestimenta eius, (et fecerunt quattuor partes: unicuique militi partem) et tunicam. Erat autem tunica inconsutilis, desuper contexta per totum.
24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which says, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
Dixerunt ergo ad invicem: Non scindamus eam, sed sortiamur de illa cuius sit. Ut Scriptura impleretur, dicens: Partiti sunt vestimenta mea sibi: et in vestem meam miserunt sortem. Et milites quidem hæc fecerunt.
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Stabant autem iuxta crucem Iesu mater eius, et soror matris eius, Maria Cleophæ, et Maria Magdalene.
26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he says unto his mother, Woman, behold your son!
Cum vidisset ergo Iesus matrem, et discipulum stantem, quem diligebat, dicit matri suæ: Mulier, ecce filius tuus.
27 Then says he to the disciple, Behold your mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Deinde dicit discipulo: Ecce mater tua. Et ex illa hora accepit eam discipulus in sua.
28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, says, I thirst.
Postea sciens Iesus quia omnia consummata sunt, ut consummaretur Scriptura, dixit: Sitio.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
Vas ergo erat positum aceto plenum. Illi autem spongiam plenam aceto, hyssopo circumponentes, obtulerunt ori eius.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the spirit. (pneuma)
Cum ergo accepisset Iesus acetum, dixit: Consummatum est. Et inclinato capite tradidit spiritum.
31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day, ) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
Iudæi ergo, (quoniam Parasceve erat) ut non remanerent in cruce corpora sabbato, (erat enim magnus dies ille Sabbati) rogaverunt Pilatum ut frangerentur eorum crura, et tollerentur.
32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
Venerunt ergo milites: et primi quidem fregerunt crura, et alterius, qui crucifixus est cum eo.
33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
Ad Iesum autem cum venissent, ut viderunt eum iam mortuum, non fregerunt eius crura,
34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
sed unus militum lancea latus eius aperuit, et continuo exivit sanguis, et aqua.
35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knows that he says true, that all of you might believe.
Et qui vidit, testimonium perhibuit: et verum est testimonium eius. Et ille scit quia vera dicit: ut et vos credatis.
36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
Facta sunt enim hæc ut Scriptura impleretur: Os non comminuetis ex eo.
37 And again another scripture says, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
Et iterum alia Scriptura dicit: Videbunt in quem transfixerunt.
38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
Post hæc autem rogavit Pilatum Ioseph ab Arimathæa, (eo quod esset discipulus Iesu, occultus autem propter metum Iudæorum) ut tolleret corpus Iesu. Et permisit Pilatus. Venit ergo, et tulit corpus Iesu.
39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
Venit autem et Nicodemus, qui venerat ad Iesum nocte primum, ferens mixturam myrrhæ, et aloes, quasi libras centum.
40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
Acceperunt ergo corpus Iesu, et ligaverunt illud linteis cum aromatibus, sicut mos est Iudæis sepelire.
41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new tomb, wherein was never man yet laid.
Erat autem in loco, ubi crucifixus est, hortus: et in horto monumentum novum, in quo nondum quisquam positus erat.
42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the tomb was nigh at hand.
Ibi ergo propter Parasceven Iudæorum, quia iuxta erat monumentum, posuerunt Iesum.
