1 Samuel 18
1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
A la suite de son entretien avec Saül, le cœur de Jonathan s’attacha à David, de sorte qu’il l’aima comme lui-même.
2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.
Saül le retint ce jour même et ne le laissa pas retourner chez son père.
3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
Pour Jonathan, il fit un pacte avec David, parce qu’il l’aimait comme lui-même;
4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.
il se dépouilla du manteau qu’il portait et le donna à David, ainsi que son costume, et jusqu’à son épée, son arc et sa ceinture.
5 And David went out anywhere Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.
David fit diverses expéditions, réussit partout où l’envoyait Saül, et celui-ci le mit à la tête des guerriers; et il se fit aimer de tout le peuple, comme des serviteurs de Saül.
6 And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with timbrels, with joy, and with instruments of music.
Or, quand on rentra, comme David revenait vainqueur du Philistin, les femmes s’avancèrent de toutes les villes d’Israël au-devant du roi Saül, chantant et dansant au son des gais tambourins et des triangles.
7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
Et elles chantaient en chœur dans leurs jeux, en disant: "Saül a battu ses mille, Et David ses myriades!"
8 And Saul was very angry, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
Saül s’en fâcha fort, trouvant la chose déplaisante; et il dit: "Elles donnent les myriades à David et à moi les mille: il ne lui manque plus que la royauté!"
9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.
Saül regarda David de mauvais œil, à partir de ce jour.
10 And it came to pass on the next day, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.
Le lendemain, le mauvais esprit envoyé par Dieu s’empara de Saül, et il allait dans la maison, en proie au délire, tandis que David touchait de ses doigts l’instrument, comme il l’avait fait précédemment; et Saül avait sa lance en main.
11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will strike David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.
Saül brandit la lance en disant: "Je clouerai David au mur"; mais David l’évita deux fois.
12 And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.
Alors Saül eut peur de David, parce que le Seigneur était avec lui, tandis qu’il avait abandonné Saül
13 Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
Saül l’éloigna donc d’auprès de lui et il en fit un chef de mille à son service, de sorte qu’il dut aller et venir à la tête du peuple.
14 And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.
David avait du succès dans toutes ses expéditions, car l’Eternel était avec lui;
15 Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.
et Saül, voyant combien il réussissait, en fut effrayé.
16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.
Mais tout Israël et Juda aimaient David, parce qu’il allait et venait à leur tête.
17 And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give you to wife: only be you valiant for me, and fight the LORD's battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.
Saül dit à David "Vois, ma fille aînée, Mérab, c’est elle que je veux te donner pour femme, sois-moi seulement un brave guerrier, combattant les combats du Seigneur." (Il ne faut pas que ma main le frappe, pensait Saül, mais plutôt celle des Philistins.)
18 And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?
David répondit à Saül: "Qui suis-je, quelle est mon existence, que vaut ma famille en Israël, pour que je devienne gendre du roi?…"
19 But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.
Or, à l’époque où Mérab, fille de Saül, devait être donnée à David, elle fut donnée en mariage à Adriel de Mehola.
20 And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
Mikhal, fille de Saül, conçut de l’amour pour David; Saül en fut informé, et la chose lui plut;
21 And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, You shall this day be my son in law in the one of the two.
car Saül se disait "Je la lui donnerai, afin qu’elle soit un piège pour lui et qu’il tombe sous la main des Philistins." Il dit donc à David: "C’Est par la seconde que tu deviendras mon gendre à présent."
22 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you: now therefore be the king's son in law.
Et Saül ordonna à ses serviteurs de dire à David en confidence: "Vois, le roi a de l’affection pour toi, tous ses serviteurs t’aiment; deviens donc gendre du roi."
23 And Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seems it to you a light thing to be a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?
Les serviteurs de Saül parlèrent dans ce sens à l’oreille de David, mais il répondit: "Est-ce peu de chose à vos yeux que de m’allier au roi, moi pauvre et chétif?"
24 And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spoke David.
Les serviteurs de Saül le lui rapportèrent, en disant: "Voilà ce qu’a répondu David."
25 And Saul said, Thus shall all of you say to David, The king desires not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
Et Saül dit: "Vous direz à David: Le roi n’exige d’autre douaire que cent prépuces de Philistins comme châtiment de ces ennemis du roi." (Saül avait pour but de faire tomber David aux mains des Philistins.)
26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired.
Ses serviteurs rapportèrent cette parole à David, à qui il plut de devenir le gendre du roi. Et le temps n’était pas encore écoulé,
27 Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.
que David se mit en campagne, partit avec ses hommes, défit deux cents Philistins et rapporta leurs prépuces, qu’on livra intégralement au roi, afin qu’il devînt son gendre; et Saül lui donna pour femme sa fille Mikhal.
28 And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal Saul's daughter loved him.
Saül vit et reconnut que Dieu était avec David, qu’il était aimé de Mikhal, sa fille.
29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually.
Et plus que jamais Saül redouta David, et il lui fut hostile sa vie durant.
30 Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
Les chefs des Philistins firent mainte incursion; mais au cours de leurs expéditions, David eut constamment du succès, plus que tous les serviteurs de Saül. Et son nom fut en grand honneur.
