Ezra 4
1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto YHWH Elohim of Israel;
ユダとベニヤミンの敵である者たちは捕囚から帰ってきた人々が、イスラエルの神、主のために神殿を建てていることを聞き、
2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your Elohim, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
ゼルバベルと氏族の長たちのもとに来て言った、「われわれも、あなたがたと一緒にこれを建てさせてください。われわれはあなたがたと同じく、あなたがたの神を礼拝します。アッスリヤの王エサル・ハドンがわれわれをここにつれて来た日からこのかた、われわれは彼に犠牲をささげてきました」。
3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our Elohim; but we ourselves together will build unto YHWH Elohim of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
しかしゼルバベル、エシュアおよびその他のイスラエルの氏族の長たちは、彼らに言った、「あなたがたは、われわれの神に宮を建てることにあずかってはなりません。ペルシャの王クロス王がわれわれに命じたように、われわれだけで、イスラエルの神、主のために建てるのです」。
4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
そこでその地の民はユダの民の手を弱らせて、その建築を妨げ、
5 And hired counsellers against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
その企てを破るために役人を買収して彼らに敵せしめ、ペルシャ王クロスの代からペルシャ王ダリヨスの治世にまで及んだ。
6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
アハスエロスの治世、すなわちその治世の初めに、彼らはユダとエルサレムの住民を訴える告訴状を書いた。
7 And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
またアルタシャスタの世にビシラム、ミテレダテ、タビエルおよびその他の同僚も、ペルシャ王アルタシャスタに手紙を書いた。その手紙の文はアラム語で書かれて訳されていた。
8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
長官レホムと書記官シムシャイはアルタシャスタ王にエルサレムを訴えて次のような手紙をしたためた。
9 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
すなわち長官レホムと書記官シムシャイおよびその他の同僚、すなわち裁判官、知事、役人、ペルシャ人、エレクの人々、バビロン人、スサの人々すなわちエラムびと、
10 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
およびその他の民すなわち大いなる尊いオスナパルが、移してサマリヤの町々および川向こうのその他の地に住ませた者どもが、
11 This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
送った手紙の写しはこれである。「アルタシャスタ王へ、川向こうのあなたのしもべども、あいさつを申し上げます。
12 Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
王よ、ご承知ください。あなたのもとから、わたしたちの所に上って来たユダヤ人らはエルサレムに来て、かのそむいた悪い町を建て直し、その城壁を築きあげ、その基礎をつくろっています。
13 Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
王よ、いまご承知ください。もしこの町を建て、城壁を築きあげるならば、彼らはみつぎ、関税、税金を納めなくなります。そうすれば王の収入が減るでしょう。
14 Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
われわれは王宮の塩をはむ者ですから、王の不名誉を見るに忍びないので、人をつかわして王にお聞かせするのです。
15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
歴代の記録をお調べください。その記録の書において、この町はそむいた町で、諸王と諸州に害を及ぼしたものであることを見、その中に古来、むほんの行われたことを知られるでしょう。この町が滅ぼされたのはこれがためなのです。
16 We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
われわれは王にお知らせいたします。もしこの町が建てられ、城壁が築きあげられたなら、王は川向こうの領地を失うに至るでしょう」。
17 Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
王は返書を送って言った、「長官レホム、書記官シムシャイ、その他サマリヤおよび川向こうのほかの所に住んでいる同僚に、あいさつをする。いま、
18 The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
あなたがたがわれわれに送った手紙を、わたしの前に明らかに読ませた。
19 And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
わたしは命令を下して調査させたところ、この町は古来、諸王にそむいた事、その中に反乱、むほんのあったことを見いだした。
20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
またエルサレムには大いなる王たちがあって、川向こうの地をことごとく治め、みつぎ、関税、税金を納めさせたこともあった。
21 Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
それであなたがたは命令を伝えて、その人々をとどめ、わたしの命令の下るまで、この町を建てさせてはならない。
22 Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
あなたがたは慎んでこのことについて怠ることのないようにしなさい。どうして損害を増して、王に害を及ぼしてよかろうか」。
23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
アルタシャスタ王の手紙の写しがレホムおよび書記官シムシャイとその同僚の前に読み上げられたので、彼らは急いでエルサレムのユダヤ人のもとにおもむき、腕力と権力とをもって彼らをやめさせた。
24 Then ceased the work of the house of Elohim which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
それでエルサレムにある神の宮の工事は中止された。すなわちペルシャ王ダリヨスの治世の二年まで中止された。
