Job 9
1 Then Job answered and said,
Alors Job prit la parole et dit:
2 I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
Je sais bien qu'il en est ainsi: comment l'homme serait-il juste vis-à-vis de Dieu?
3 If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
S'il voulait contester avec lui, sur mille choses il ne pourrait répondre à une seule.
4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who has hardened himself against him, and has prospered?
Dieu est sage en son cœur, et puissant en force: qui lui a résisté, et est demeuré en paix?
5 Which removes the mountains, and they know not: which overturns them in his anger.
Il transporte les montagnes, sans qu'elles le sachent, il les renverse dans sa colère;
6 Which shakes the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
il secoue la terre sur sa base, et ses colonnes sont ébranlées.
7 Which commands the sun, and it rises not; and seals up the stars.
Il commande au soleil, et le soleil ne se lève pas; il met un sceau sur les étoiles.
8 Which alone spreads out the heavens, and treads on the waves of the sea.
Seul, il étend les cieux, il marche sur les hauteurs de la mer.
9 Which makes Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.
Il a créé la Grande Ourse, Orion, les Pléiades, et les régions du ciel austral.
10 Which does great things past finding out; yes, and wonders without number.
Il fait des merveilles qu'on ne peut sonder, des prodiges qu'on ne saurait compter.
11 See, he goes by me, and I see him not: he passes on also, but I perceive him not.
Voici qu'il passe près de moi, et je ne le vois pas; il s'éloigne, sans que je l'aperçoive.
12 Behold, he takes away, who can hinder him? who will say to him, What do you?
S'il ravit une proie, qui s'y opposera, qui lui dira: « Que fais-tu? »
13 If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.
Dieu! Rien ne fléchit sa colère; devant lui s'inclinent les légions d'orgueil.
14 How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
Et moi je songerais à lui répondre, à choisir mes paroles pour discuter avec lui!
15 Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.
Aurais-je pour moi la justice, je ne répondrais pas; j'implorerais la clémence de mon juge.
16 If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had listened to my voice.
Même s'il se rendait à mon appel, je ne croirais pas qu'il eût écouté ma voix:
17 For he breaks me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause.
lui qui me brise comme dans un tourbillon, et multiplie mes blessures sans motif;
18 He will not suffer me to take my breath, but fills me with bitterness.
qui ne me laisse point respirer, et me rassasie d'amertume.
19 If I speak of strength, see, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?
S'agit-il de force, voici qu'il est fort, s'agit-il de droit, il dit: « Qui m'assigne? »
20 If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.
Serais-je irréprochable, ma bouche même me condamnerait; serais-je innocent, elle me déclarerait pervers.
21 Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.
Innocent! Je le suis; je ne tiens pas à l'existence, et la vie m'est à charge.
22 This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroys the perfect and the wicked.
Il m'importe après tout; c'est pourquoi j'ai dit: « Il fait périr également le juste et l'impie. »
23 If the whip slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
Si du moins le fléau tuait d'un seul coup! Hélas! il se rit des épreuves de l'innocent!
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covers the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?
La terre est livrée aux mains du méchant, Dieu voile la face de ses juges: si ce n'est pas lui, qui est-ce donc?
25 Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.
Mes jours sont plus rapides qu'un courrier, ils fuient sans avoir vu le bonheur;
26 They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hastens to the prey.
ils passent comme la barque de jonc, comme l'aigle qui fond sur sa proie.
27 If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:
Si je dis: « Je veux oublier ma plainte, quitter mon air triste, prendre un air joyeux, »
28 I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that you will not hold me innocent.
je tremble pour toutes mes douleurs, je sais que tu ne me tiendras pas pour innocent.
29 If I be wicked, why then labor I in vain?
Je serai jugé coupable: pourquoi prendre une peine inutile?
30 If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
Quand je me laverais dans la neige, quand je purifierais mes mains avec le bor,
31 Yet shall you plunge me in the ditch, and my own clothes shall abhor me.
tu me plongerais dans la fange, et mes vêtements m'auraient en horreur.
32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.
Dieu n'est pas un homme comme moi, pour que je lui réponde, pour que nous comparaissions ensemble en justice.
33 Neither is there any judge between us, that might lay his hand on us both.
Il n'y a pas entre nous d'arbitre qui pose sa main sur nous deux.
34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
Qu'il retire sa verge de dessus moi, que ses terreurs cessent de m'épouvanter:
35 Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.
alors je parlerai sans le craindre; autrement, je ne suis point à moi-même.
