Ezra 9
1 Now when these things were done, the princes drew near unto me, saying: 'The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.
Et quand ces choses furent accomplies, les chefs s'approchèrent de moi en disant: Le peuple d'Israël et les Prêtres et les Lévites ne se séparent point des populations du monde, imitant leurs abominations qui sont celles des Cananéens, des Héthiens, des Phérésiens, des Jébusites, des Ammonites, des Moabites, des Égyptiens et des Amoréens.
2 For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons; so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the peoples of the lands; yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been first in this faithlessness.'
Car ils ont pris de leurs filles pour eux et leurs fils et ont mélangé la race sainte avec les populations du monde. Et les chefs et les grands ont les premiers prêté la main à ce crime.
3 And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down appalled.
Et lorsque j'entendis ce discours, je déchirai mon habit et mon manteau, et je m'arrachai les cheveux de ma tête et la barbe, et je m'assis stupéfait.
4 Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the faithlessness of them of the captivity; and I sat appalled until the evening offering.
Et vers moi se réunirent tous ceux qui révéraient les paroles du Dieu d'Israël, à cause du crime des captifs, et je restai stupéfait jusqu'à l'oblation du soir.
5 And at the evening offering I arose up from my fasting, even with my garment and my mantle rent; and I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God;
Et à l'oblation du soir je me levai de mon état d'humiliation, avec mon habit et mon manteau déchirés, et je tombai à genoux et étendis mes mains vers l'Éternel, mon Dieu,
6 and I said: 'O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to Thee, my God; for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our guiltiness is grown up unto the heavens.
et je m'écriai: O mon Dieu, je suis honteux et confus à n'oser, ô mon Dieu, lever mon front vers toi. Car nos crimes par leur nombre dépassent notre tête, et notre iniquité par sa grandeur atteint jusqu'aux cieux.
7 Since the days of our fathers we have been exceeding guilty unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to spoiling, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
Dès les jours de nos pères jusqu'aujourd'hui nous avons été grandement coupables, et à cause de nos crimes, nous, nos rois et nos Prêtres avons été livrés aux mains des rois des nations, à l'épée, à la captivité et au pillage et à l'opprobre, comme nous le sommes aujourd'hui.
8 And now for a little moment grace hath been shown from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in His holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.
Cependant un instant de grâce nous est accordé de par l'Éternel, notre Dieu, qui nous laisse quelques réchappés et nous accorde le pilier d'une tente dans le lieu de son Sanctuaire, notre Dieu récréant ainsi nos yeux et nous faisant un peu reprendre vie dans notre servitude.
9 For we are bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the ruins thereof, and to give us a fence in Judah and in Jerusalem.
Car nous sommes esclaves; mais dans notre esclavage notre Dieu ne nous a pas abandonnés, et Il nous a concilié la faveur des rois de Perse, pour nous redonner la vie, pour relever la Maison de notre Dieu, pour restaurer ses ruines et nous permettre d'avoir des murs en Juda et à Jérusalem.
10 And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken Thy commandments,
Et maintenant, ô notre Dieu, que dirons-nous après cela? Car nous avons déserté tes commandements
11 which Thou hast commanded by Thy servants the prophets, saying: The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land through the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, through their abominations, wherewith they have filled it from one end to another with their filthiness.
que tu nous avais prescrits par tes serviteurs les prophètes en disant: Le pays où vous entrez pour l'occuper est un pays souillé de la souillure des peuples du monde, des abominations dont ils l'ont rempli d'un bout à l'autre bout par leur impureté.
12 Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity for ever; that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.
Vous ne marierez donc point vos filles à leurs fils, ni leurs filles à vos fils, et vous ne chercherez jamais ni leur amitié, ni leur prospérité, si vous voulez être forts et jouir des biens du pays et le transmettre par héritage à vos fils à jamais.
13 And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, seeing that Thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such a remnant,
Et après tout ce qui nous est advenu par suite de nos méchantes actions et de notre grande culpabilité (car, ô notre Dieu, tu nous as ménagés plus que ne le méritaient nos forfaits, et tu nous as procuré le salut de cette manière),
14 shall we again break Thy commandments, and make marriages with the peoples that do these abominations? wouldest not Thou be angry with us till Thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape?
reviendrions-nous à enfreindre tes commandements et à nous allier à ces peuples abominables? Ne t'irriteras-tu pas contre nous jusqu'à notre extinction: jusqu'à nous ôter tout reste, et tous réchappés?
15 O LORD, the God of Israel, Thou art righteous; for we are left a remnant that is escaped, as it is this day; behold, we are before Thee in our guiltiness; for none can stand before Thee because of this.'
Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, tu es juste. Car nous sommes conservés et avons échappé, comme c'est aujourd'hui: Nous voici devant ta face dans notre état de coupables; car nul ne saurait subsister devant toi dans cette condition.
