Daniel 4
1 Nebuchad-nezzar King vnto all people, nations and languages, that dwell in all the world, Peace be multiplied vnto you:
Le roi Nébucadnézar à tous les peuples, aux nations et aux hommes de toute langue qui habitent sur toute la terre. A vous grande prospérité!
2 I thought it good to declare the signes and wonders, that the hie God hath wrought toward me.
J'ai trouvé bon de publier les signes et les miracles que le Dieu suprême a opérés sur moi.
3 How great are his signes, and how mightie are his wonders! his kingdome is an euerlasting kingdome, and his dominion is from generation to generation.
Ses signes! qu'ils sont grands! et ses miracles! qu'ils sont puissants! Son empire est un empire éternel, et sa domination se perpétue à travers tous les âges.
4 I Nebuchad-nezzar being at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace,
Moi, Nébucadnézar, je vivais tranquille dans ma maison, et heureux dans mon palais:
5 Saw a dreame, which made me afraide, and the thoughtes vpon my bed, and the visions of mine head troubled me.
j'eus un songe qui m'effraya, et les pensées que j'avais sur ma couche, et les visions de mon esprit me troublaient.
6 Therefore made I a decree, that they should bring all the wise men of Babel before mee, that they might declare vnto me the interpretation of the dreame.
Et de par moi ordre fut donné d'amener devant moi tous les sages de Babel, afin qu'ils m'expliquassent le sens du songe.
7 So came the inchanters, the astrologians, the Caldeans and the sothsayers, to whom I tolde the dreame, but they could not shew me the interpretation thereof,
Alors furent introduits les devins, les enchanteurs, les Chaldéens et les mages, et je leur dis le songe, mais ils ne m'en expliquèrent point le sens.
8 Till at the last Daniel came before mee, (whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, which hath the spirite of the holy gods in him) and before him I tolde the dreame, saying,
Et enfin parut devant moi Daniel, nommé Beltsazar du nom de mon Dieu, et en qui est l'esprit des dieux saints, et je lui dis le songe:
9 O Belteshazzar, chiefe of the enchanters, because I know, that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell mee the visions of my dreame, that I haue seene and the interpretation thereof.
Beltsazar, chef des mages, en qui je sais que se trouve l'esprit des dieux saints, et pour qui aucun mystère n'est embarrassant, dis-moi les visions que j'ai vues en songe, et leur signification.
10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed. And beholde, I sawe a tree in the middes of the earth and the height thereof was great:
Or voici les visions [qui se sont présentées] à mon esprit, pendant que j'étais couché: Je regardais, et voici, il y avait au milieu de la terre un grand arbre qui était très élevé;
11 A great tree and strong, and the height thereof reached vnto heauen, and the sight thereof to the endes of all the earth.
l'arbre était grand et vigoureux, et sa hauteur atteignait au ciel, et il était aperçu jusqu'au bout de la terre.
12 The boughes thereof were faire and the fruite thereof much, and in it was meate for all: it made a shadow vnder it for the beastes of the fielde, and the foules of the heauen dwelt in the boughes thereof, and all flesh fedde of it.
Son feuillage était beau, et ses fruits abondants, et il offrait une nourriture à tous: sous lui les bêtes des champs venaient chercher l'ombre, et les oiseaux du ciel habitaient ses branches, et il y avait une nourriture pour toute chair.
13 I sawe in the visions of mine head vpon my bed, and beholde, a watchman and an holy one came downe from heauen,
Je contemplais durant les visions qui sur ma couche s'offraient à mon esprit, et voici, l'un des Saints qui veillent descendit du ciel.
14 And cried aloude, and said thus, Hew downe the tree, and breake off his branches: shake off his leaues, and scatter his fruite, that the beastes may flee from vnder it, and the foules from his branches.
Il cria avec force, et parla ainsi: Coupez l'arbre, et tronçonnez ses branches, détachez ses feuilles, et dispersez ses fruits, que les animaux fuient son abri, et les oiseaux ses branches!
15 Neuerthelesse leaue the stumpe of his rootes in the earth, and with a band of yron and brasse binde it among the grasse of the fielde, and let it be wet with the dewe of heauen, and let his portion be with the beastes among the grasse of the fielde.
Cependant laissez en terre la souche de ses racines, mais dans des chaînes de fer et d'airain, au milieu de la verdure des campagnes, et qu'il soit trempé de la rosée du ciel, et qu'avec les animaux il entre en part de l'herbe de la terre!
16 Let his heart be changed from mans nature, and let a beasts heart be giuen vnto him, and let seuen times be passed ouer him.
Son cœur sera autre que celui d'un humain, et le cœur d'une brute lui sera donné, et le temps passera sept fois sur lui.
17 The sentence is according to the decree of the watchmen, and according to the word of the holy ones: the demaunde was answered, to the intent that liuing men may knowe, that the most High hath power ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it to whomsoeuer he will, and appointeth ouer it the most abiect among men.
L'arrêt en est délibéré par ceux qui veillent, et l'événement est dans la sentence des Saints, afin que les vivants sachent que le Très-Haut a la domination sur la royauté de l'homme, et qu'il la confère à qui Il veut, et qu'il y élève le plus abject des hommes.
18 This is the dreame, that I King Nebuchad-nezzar haue seene: therefore thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof: for all the wisemen of my kingdome are not able to shewe mee the interpretation: but thou art able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.
Tel est le songe que j'eus, moi, le roi Nébucadnézar; et toi, Beltsazar, donnes-en l'interprétation, puisque tous les sages de mon empire sont incapables de m'en faire connaître le sens; mais toi, tu le peux, car l'esprit des dieux saints est en toi.
19 Then Daniel (whose name was Belteshazzar) held his peace by the space of one houre, and his thoughts troubled him, and the King spake and said, Belteshazzar, let neither the dreame, nor the interpretation thereof trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and saide, My lord, the dreame be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.
Alors Daniel, nommé Beltsazar, demeura un moment interdit, et ses pensées le troublaient. Le roi prit la parole et dit: Beltsazar, que le songe et l'interprétation ne te troublent pas! Beltsazar répondit et dit: Mon Seigneur, que le songe s'applique à tes ennemis, et son interprétation à tes adversaires!
20 The tree that thou sawest, which was great and mightie, whose height reached vnto the heauen, and the sight thereof through all the world,
L'arbre que tu as vu, qui était grand et vigoureux, et dont la hauteur atteignait au ciel, et qui était vu sur toute la terre,
21 Whose leaues were faire and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meate for all, vnder the which the beastes of the fielde dwelt, and vpon whose branches the foules of the heauen did sit,
et dont le feuillage était beau et les fruits abondants, et qui avait une nourriture pour tous, sous lequel s'abritaient les animaux des campagnes, et dont les oiseaux du ciel habitaient les branches,
22 It is thou, O King, that art great and mightie: for thy greatnesse is growen, and reacheth vnto heauen, and thy dominion to the endes of the earth.
c'est toi, ô roi qui es grand et puissant, et dont la grandeur est immense et atteint au ciel, et dont l'empire s'étend jusqu'au bout de la terre.
23 Where as the King sawe a watchman, and an holy one, that came downe from heauen, and said, Hew downe the tree and destroy it, yet leaue the stumpe of the rootes thereof in the earth, and with a bande of yron and brasse binde it among the grasse of the fielde, and let it be wette with the dewe of heauen, and let his portion be with the beastes of the fielde, till seuen times passe ouer him,
Et si le roi a vu l'un des Saints vigilants descendu du ciel et disant: Coupez l'arbre, et abîmez-le, cependant laissez en terre la souche de ses racines, mais dans des chaînes de fer et d'airain, au milieu de la verdure des campagnes, et qu'il soit trempé de la rosée du ciel, et qu'il entre en part avec les bêtes des champs, jusqu'à ce que le temps ait passé sept fois sur lui,
24 This is the interpretation, O King, and it is the decree of the most High, which is come vpon my lord the King,
voici ce que cela signifie, ô roi, et c'est ici l'arrêt du Très-Haut qui s'adresse au roi, mon Seigneur:
25 That they shall driue thee from men, and thy dwelling shalbe with the beasts of the fielde: they shall make thee to eate grasse as the oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dewe of heauen: and seuen times shall passe ouer thee, till thou knowe, that the most High beareth rule ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it to whom so euer he will.
On te chassera du milieu des hommes, et tu demeureras avec les bêtes des champs, et on te donnera, comme au bœuf, de l'herbe à manger, et tu seras trempé de la rosée du ciel, et le temps passera sept fois sur toi, jusqu'à ce que tu reconnaisses que le Très-Haut a la domination sur la royauté de l'homme, et qu'il la confère à qui Il veut.
26 Where as they sayd, that one should leaue the stumpe of the tree rootes, thy kingdome shall remaine vnto thee: after that, thou shalt knowe, that the heauens haue the rule.
Ce qui a été dit de laisser la souche des racines de l'arbre, c'est que ta royauté te sera restituée dès que tu auras reconnu qu'il règne dans le ciel.
27 Wherefore, O King, let my counsell be acceptable vnto thee, and breake off thy sinnes by righteousnes, and thine iniquities by mercy toward the poore: lo, let there be an healing of thine errour.
Aussi, ô roi, que mon conseil soit agréé de toi, et rachète tes péchés par la justice, et ton iniquité par la compassion envers les pauvres, si peut-être ta prospérité se prolonge.
28 All these things shall come vpon the King Nebuchad-nezzar.
Tout cela est arrivé au roi Nébucadnézar.
29 At the end of twelue moneths, he walked in the royall palace of Babel.
Au bout de douze mois il se promenait dans son palais royal à Babel:
30 And the King spake and sayde, Is not this great Babel, that I haue built for the house of the kingdome by the might of my power, and for the honour of my maiestie?
le roi prit la parole et dit: N'est-ce pas là cette vaste Babel que j'ai bâtie, pour être une résidence royale, par ma grande puissance, et à la gloire de ma majesté?
31 While the worde was in the Kings mouth, a voyce came downe from heauen, saying, O King Nebuchad-nezzar, to thee be it spoken, Thy kingdome is departed from thee,
Le mot était encore dans la bouche du roi, qu'une voix descendit du ciel: Il t'est dit, ô roi Nébucadnézar: La royauté t'est ôtée!
32 And they shall driue thee from men, and thy dwelling shalbe with the beastes of the fielde: they shall make thee to eate grasse, as the oxen, and seuen times shall passe ouer thee, vntill thou knowest, that the most High beareth rule ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it vnto whomsoeuer he will.
et on te chassera du milieu des hommes, et tu demeureras avec les bêtes des champs, on te donnera, comme au bœuf, de l'herbe à manger, et le temps passera sept fois sur toi, jusqu'à ce que tu reconnaisses que le Très-Haut a la domination sur la royauté de l'homme, et qu'il la confère à qui Il veut.
33 The very same houre was this thing fulfilled vpon Nebuchad-nezzar, and hee was driuen from men, and did eate grasse as the oxen, and his body was wet with the dewe of heauen, till his heares were growen as eagles feathers, and his nailes like birds clawes.
Au même instant la parole s'accomplit sur Nébucadnézar, et il fut chassé du milieu des hommes, et on lui donna, comme au bœuf, de l'herbe à manger, et son corps fut trempé de la rosée du ciel, jusqu'à ce que ses cheveux crussent, comme aux aigles, et ses ongles, comme aux oiseaux.
34 And at the ende of these dayes I Nebuchad-nezzar lift vp mine eyes vnto heauen, and mine vnderstanding was restored vnto me, and I gaue thankes vnto the most High, and I praysed and honoured him that liueth for euer, whose power is an euerlasting power, and his kingdome is from generation to generation.
Mais à l'expiration du temps, moi Nébucadnézar, j'élevai mes yeux vers le ciel, et la connaissance me revint, et je bénis le Très-Haut, et je louai et magnifiai Celui qui vit éternellement, dont l'empire est un empire éternel, et dont la royauté dure à travers tous les âges.
35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and according to his will he worketh in the armie of heauen, and in the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, nor say vnto him, What doest thou?
Auprès de lui tous les habitants de la terre sont réputés néant, et Il en agit à son gré avec l'armée du ciel et les habitants de la terre, et il n'en est aucun qui puisse retenir sa main et lui dire: Que fais-tu?
36 At the same time was mine vnderstanding restored vnto me, and I returned to the honour of my kingdome: my glory and my beautie was restored vnto me, and my counsellours and my princes sought vnto me, and I was established in my kingdome, and my glory was augmented toward me.
Dans ce temps-là, la connaissance me revint, et à la gloire de mon empire, de ma majesté et de ma splendeur elle me revint, et mes conseillers et mes grands vinrent me chercher, et je fus rétabli sur mon trône, et j'obtins un grand accroissement de grandeur.
37 Now therefore I Nebuchad-nezzar prayse and extoll and magnifie the King of heauen, whose workes are all trueth, and his wayes iudgement, and those that walke in pride, he is able to abase.
Maintenant, moi Nébucadnézar, je loue et j'exalte et je magnifie le Roi du ciel, car toute son action est vérité, et ses voies, justice, et Il peut abaisser ceux qui suivent la voie de l'orgueil.
