Titus 1
1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of the elect of God and the acknowledging of the truth, which is according to godliness:
Paul, serviteur de Dieu et apôtre de Jésus-Christ, selon la foi des élus de Dieu, et la connaissance de la vérité, qui est selon la piété,
2 Unto the hope of life everlasting, which God, who lieth not, hath promised before the times of the world: (aiōnios g166)
En espérance de la vie éternelle, que Dieu, qui ne ment point, a promise avant tous les siècles, (aiōnios g166)
3 But hath in due times manifested his word in preaching, which is committed to me according to the commandment of God our Saviour:
Et qui a manifesté en son temps sa parole dans la prédication qui m’a été confiée, d’après le commandement de Dieu notre Sauveur,
4 To Titus my beloved son, according to the common faith, grace and peace from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus our Saviour.
À Tite, son fils chéri, dans une commune foi: Grâce et paix par Dieu le Père, et par le Christ Jésus notre Sauveur.
5 For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and shouldest ordain priests in every city, as I also appointed thee:
Si je t’ai laissé en Crète, c’est pour que tu établisses les choses qui manquent, et que tu constitues des prêtres dans chaque ville, ainsi que je te l’ai prescrit,
6 If any be without crime, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of riot, or unruly.
Si donc quelqu’un est sans reproche, n’ayant épousé qu’une seule femme, et si ses enfants sont fidèles, non accusés de débauche, ou indisciplinés, choisis-le.
7 For a bishop must be without crime, as the steward of God: not proud, not subject to anger, not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre:
Car l’évêque doit être irréprochable, comme dispensateur de Dieu; nullement altier, ni colère, ni porté à boire et à frapper, ni avide d’un gain honteux;
8 But given to hospitality, gentle, sober, just, holy, continent:
Mais hospitalier, bon, sobre, juste, saint, continent;
9 Embracing that faithful word which is according to doctrine, that he may be able to exhort in sound doctrine, and to convince the gainsayers.
Fortement attaché aux vérités de la foi, qui sont conformes à la doctrine, afin de pouvoir exhorter selon la saine doctrine, et confondre ceux qui la contredisent.
10 For there are also many disobedient, vain talkers, and seducers: especially they who are of the circumcision:
Car il y a beaucoup de rebelles, beaucoup de semeurs de vaines paroles, et de séducteurs; surtout parmi les circoncis.
11 Who must be reproved, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.
Il faut leur fermer la bouche, parce qu’ils causent la subversion de toutes les familles, enseignant ce qu’il ne faut pas, pour un gain honteux;
12 One of them a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, slothful bellies.
Un d’entre eux, leur propre prophète, a dit: Les Crétois sont toujours menteurs, méchantes bêtes, ventres paresseux.
13 This testimony is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
Ce témoignage est vrai, c’est pourquoi reprends-les durement, afin qu’ils se conservent purs dans la foi,
14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men, who turn themselves away from the truth.
Sans s’arrêter à des fables judaïques, et à des ordonnances d’hommes qui se détournent de la vérité.
15 All things are clean to the clean: but to them that are defiled, and to unbelievers, nothing is clean: but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.
Or tout est pur pour ceux qui sont purs; mais, pour les impurs et les infidèles, rien n’est pur; leur esprit et leur conscience sont souillés.
16 They profess that they know God: but in their works they deny him; being abominable, and incredulous, and to every good work reprobate.
Ils confessent qu’ils connaissent Dieu, et ils le nient par leurs œuvres, étant abominables, incrédules et incapables de toute bonne œuvre.
