Titus 1

1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of the elect of God and the acknowledging of the truth, which is according to godliness:

Paul, serviteur de Dieu, apôtre de Jésus-Christ, pour annoncer la foi des élus de Dieu, pour faire connaître la vérité conforme a la piété

2 Unto the hope of life everlasting, which God, who lieth not, hath promised before the times of the world: (aiōnios g166)

et donner l'espérance de la vie éternelle, promise depuis un temps immémorial par le Dieu véridique, (aiōnios g166)

3 But hath in due times manifested his word in preaching, which is committed to me according to the commandment of God our Saviour:

révélée au temps marqué par sa parole dont il a donné l'ordre de me confier la prédication, lui, notre Dieu sauveur,

4 To Titus my beloved son, according to the common faith, grace and peace from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus our Saviour.

à Tite, mon véritable enfant dans la foi qui nous est commune. Grâce et paix te soient données par Dieu notre Père et par Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur.

5 For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and shouldest ordain priests in every city, as I also appointed thee:

Voici pourquoi je t'ai laissé en Crète: pour que tu règles ce qui reste à régler et que, dans chaque ville, tu installes des Anciens aux conditions que je t'ai indiquées:

6 If any be without crime, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of riot, or unruly.

être sans reproche, mari d'une seule femme, avoir des enfants croyants, qui ne soient ni indisciplinés, ni accusés de vivre dans le désordre.

7 For a bishop must be without crime, as the steward of God: not proud, not subject to anger, not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre:

Oui, le conducteur d'une Église doit être sans reproche, étant l'intendant de Dieu; il ne doit être ni insolent, ni colère; n'aimer ni le vin ni les querelles; ne pas être bassement intéressé;

8 But given to hospitality, gentle, sober, just, holy, continent:

mais être hospitalier, aimer à faire le bien; être modéré, juste, pieux, sobre,

9 Embracing that faithful word which is according to doctrine, that he may be able to exhort in sound doctrine, and to convince the gainsayers.

attaché à la parole authentique, conformément à la doctrine reçue, pour être capable, lui aussi, d'exhorter par un sain enseignement et de réfuter les contradicteurs.

10 For there are also many disobedient, vain talkers, and seducers: especially they who are of the circumcision:

Car ils sont nombreux, surtout parmi les circoncis, les indisciplinés, les bavards, les trompeurs

11 Who must be reproved, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.

auxquels il faut fermer la bouche. Ces gens-là mettent le désordre dans des familles entières, enseignant ce qu'il ne faut pas enseigner et cela par honteux intérêt.

12 One of them a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, slothful bellies.

Un des leurs a été leur propre prophète quand il a dit: «...Crétois, toujours menteurs, vilaines bêtes, ventres paresseux...»

13 This testimony is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

Voilà un jugement mérité; voilà le motif de les reprendre sévèrement, pour qu'ils aient une foi saine,

14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men, who turn themselves away from the truth.

qu'ils ne s'occupent pas de contes judaïques et de commandements d'hommes abandonnant la vérité.

15 All things are clean to the clean: but to them that are defiled, and to unbelievers, nothing is clean: but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

Tout est pur pour ceux qui sont purs; quant aux corrompus et aux incrédules, rien ne leur est pur; leurs pensées et leurs consciences sont corrompues.

16 They profess that they know God: but in their works they deny him; being abominable, and incredulous, and to every good work reprobate.

Ils prétendent connaître Dieu, et leurs oeuvres le renient; ils sont abominables, rebelles, incapables de rien faire de bien.
