Deuteronomy 3
1 Then we turned and went by the way of Basan: and Og the king of Basan came out to meet us with his people to fight in Edrai.
Nous étant tournés, nous montâmes par le chemin de Basan, et Og, roi de Basan, sortit à notre rencontre, avec tout son peuple, pour nous livrer bataille à Edraï.
2 And the Lord said to me: Fear him not: because he is delivered into thy hand, with all his people and his land: and thou shalt do to him as thou hast done to Sehon king of the Amorrhites, that dwelt in Hesebon.
Yahweh me dit: « Ne le crains point, car je l'ai livré entre tes mains, lui et tout son peuple, et son pays; tu le traiteras comme tu as traité Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui habitait à Hésebon. »
3 So the Lord our God delivered into our hands, Og also the king of Basan, and all his people: and we utterly destroyed them,
Et Yahweh, notre Dieu, livra aussi entre nos mains Og, roi de Basan, avec tout son peuple; nous le battîmes jusqu'à ce qu'il ne lui restât plus aucun de ses gens.
4 Wasting all his cities at one time, there was not a town that escaped us: sixty cities, all the country of Argob the kingdom of Og in Basan.
Nous prîmes alors toutes ses villes, et il n'y en eut pas une qui ne tombât entre notre pouvoir: soixante villes, toute la région d'Argob, le royaume d'Og en Basan.
5 All the cities were fenced with very high walls, and with gates and bars, besides innumerable towns that had no walls.
Toutes ces villes étaient fortifiées, avec de hautes murailles, des portes et des barres; sans compter les villes sans murailles, en très grand nombre.
6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we had done to Sehon the king of Hesebon, destroying every city, men and women and children:
Nous les dévouâmes par anathème, comme nous l'avions fait pour Séhon, roi de Hésebon, dévouant par anathème villes, hommes, femmes et enfants.
7 But the cattle and the spoils of the cities we took for our prey.
Mais nous pillâmes pour nous tout le bétail et le butin des villes.
8 And we took at that time the land out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorrhites, that were beyond the Jordan: from the torrent Amen unto the mount Hermon,
Ainsi, dans ce temps-là, nous prîmes aux deux rois des Amorrhéens le pays qui est au-delà du Jourdain, depuis le torrent de l'Arnon jusqu'à la montagne d'Hermon.
9 Which the Sidonians call Sarion, and the Amorrhites Sanir:
— Les Sidoniens appellent l'Hermon Sarion, et les Amorrhéens Sanir; —
10 All the cities that are situate in the plain, and all the land of Galaad and Basan as far as Selcha and Edrai, cities of the kingdom of Og in Basan.
toutes les villes de la plaine, tout Galaad et tout Basan, jusqu'à Selcha et Edraï, villes du royaume d'Og en Basan.
11 For only Og king of Basan remained of the race of the giants. His bed of iron is shewn, which is in Rabbath of the children of Ammon, being nine cubits long, and four broad after the measure of the cubit of a man’s hand.
Car Og, roi de Basan, était resté seul de la race des Rephaïm. Voici, son lit, un lit en fer, n'est-il pas à Rabbath, ville des enfants d'Ammon? Sa longueur est de neuf coudées, et sa largeur de quatre coudées, en coudées d'homme.
12 And we possessed the land at that time from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the torrent Amen, unto the half of mount Galaad: and I gave the cities thereof to Ruben and Gad.
Nous prîmes alors possession de ce pays. Je donnai aux Rubénites et aux Gadites le territoire à partir d'Aroër qui domine la vallée de l'Arnon, ainsi que la moitié de la montagne de Galaad avec ses villes.
13 And I delivered the other part of Galaad, and all Basan the kingdom of Og to the half tribe of Manasses, all the country of Argob: and all Basan is called the Land of giants.
Je donnai à la demi-tribu de Manassé le reste de Galaad et toute la partie de Basan formant le royaume d'Og. — Toute la contrée d'Argob, avec tout Basan, c'est ce qu'on appelle le pays des Rephaïm.
14 Jair the son of Manasses possessed all the country of Argob unto the borders of Gessuri, and Machati. And he called Basan by his own name, Havoth Jair, that is to say, the towns of Jair, until this present day.
Jaïr, fils de Manassé, obtint toute la contrée d'Argob jusqu'à la frontière des Gessuriens et des Macathiens, et il donna son nom aux bourgs de Basan, appelés Bourgs de Jaïr, jusqu'à ce jour. —
15 To Machir also I gave Galaad.
Je donnai Galaad à Machir.
16 And to the tribes of Ruben and Gad I gave of the land of Galaad as far as the torrent Amen, half the torrent, and the confines even unto the torrent Jeboc, which is the border of the children of Ammon:
Aux Rubénites et aux Gadites, je donnai une partie de Galaad et le pays jusqu'au torrent de l'Arnon, le milieu de la vallée servant de limite, et jusqu'au torrent de Jaboc, frontière des enfants d'Ammon,
17 And the plain of the wilderness, and the Jordan, and the borders of Cenereth unto the sea of the desert, which is the most salt sea, to the foot of mount Phasga eastward.
ainsi que l'Arabah, avec le Jourdain pour limite, depuis Cénéreth jusqu'à la mer de l'Arabah, la mer Salée, au pied des pentes du Phasga, vers l'Orient.
18 And I commanded you at that time, saying: The Lord your God giveth you this land for an inheritance, go ye well appointed before your brethren the children of Israel, all the strong men of you,
En ce temps-là, je vous donnai cet ordre: « Yahweh, votre Dieu, vous à donné ce pays pour qu'il soit votre propriété; vous tous, hommes forts, vous marcherez en armes devant vos frères, les enfants d'Israël.
19 Leaving your wives and children and cattle. For I know you have much cattle, and they must remain in the cities, which I have delivered to you.
Vos femmes seulement, vos petits enfants et vos troupeaux, — je sais que vous avez de nombreux troupeaux, — resteront dans les villes que je vous ai données,
20 Until the Lord give rest to your brethren, as he hath given to you: and they also possess the land, which he will give them beyond the Jordan: then shall every man return to his possession, which I have given you.
jusqu'à ce que Yahweh ait accordé le repos à vos frères comme à vous, et qu'ils possèdent, eux aussi, le pays que Yahweh, votre Dieu, leur donne de l'autre côté du Jourdain. Alors vous retournerez chacun dans l'héritage que je vous ai donné. »
21 I commanded Josue also at that time, saying: Thy eyes have seen what the Lord your God hath done to these two kings: so will he do to all the kingdoms to which thou shalt pass.
En ce temps-là, je donnai aussi des ordres à Josué, en disant: « Tes yeux ont vu tout ce que Yahweh, votre Dieu, a fait à ces deux rois: ainsi fera Yahweh à tous les royaumes contre lesquels tu vas marcher.
22 Fear them not: for the Lord your God will fight for you.
Ne les craignez point; car Yahweh, votre Dieu, combat lui-même pour vous. »
23 And I besought the Lord at that time, saying:
En ce temps-là, je suppliai Yahweh, en disant:
24 Lord God, thou hast begun to shew unto thy servant thy greatness, and most mighty hand, for there is no other God either in heaven or earth, that is able to do thy works, or to be compared to thy strength.
« Seigneur Yahweh, vous avez commencé à montrer à votre serviteur votre grandeur et votre main puissante; car quel Dieu y a-t-il, au ciel et sur la terre, qui puisse accomplir vos œuvres et vos hauts faits?
25 I will pass over therefore, and will see this excellent land beyond the Jordan, and this goodly mountain, and Libanus.
Que je passe, je vous prie, que je voie ce bon pays au-delà du Jourdain, cette belle montagne et le Liban! »
26 And the Lord was angry with me on your account and heard me not, but said to me: It is enough: speak no more to me of this matter.
Mais Yahweh s'irrita contre moi, à cause de vous, et il ne m'exauça point. Yahweh me dit: « C'est assez, ne me parle plus de cette affaire.
27 Go up to the top of Phasga, and cast thy eyes round about to the west, and to the north, and to the south, and to the east, and behold it, for thou shalt not pass this Jordan.
Monte au sommet du Phasga, porte tes regards vers l'occident, vers le nord, vers le midi et vers l'orient, et contemple de tes yeux; car tu ne passeras pas ce Jourdain.
28 Command Josue, and encourage and strengthen him: for he shall go before this people, and shall divide unto them the land which thou shalt see.
Donne des ordres à Josué, fortifie le et encourage-le, car c'est lui qui marchera devant ce peuple et qui le mettra en possession du pays que tu verras. »
29 And we abode in the valley over against the temple of Phogor.
Nous demeurâmes dans la vallée, vis-à-vis de Beth-Phogor.
