Habakkuk 1

1 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.

Sentence dont Habacuc, le prophète, eut la vision.

2 Jehovah, how long shall I cry and thou wilt not hear? I cry out unto thee, Violence! and thou dost not save.

Jusques à quand, Yahweh, t'implorerai-je, sans que tu m'entendes, crierai-je vers toi à la violence, sans que tu me délivres?

3 Why dost thou cause me to see iniquity, and lookest thou upon grievance? For spoiling and violence are before me; and there is strife, and contention riseth up.

Pourquoi me fais-tu voir l'iniquité, et contemples-tu la souffrance? La dévastation et la violence sont devant moi, il y a des querelles et la discorde s'élève;

4 Therefore the law is powerless, and justice doth never go forth; for the wicked encompasseth the righteous; therefore judgment goeth forth perverted.

à cause de cela la loi se meurt, et la justice ne voit plus le jour; car le méchant circonvient le juste; c'est pourquoi le droit sort faussé.

5 See ye among the nations, and behold, and wonder marvellously; for [I] work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be declared [to you].

Jetez les yeux sur les nations et regardez; soyez étonnés, stupéfaits. Car je vais faire en vos jours une œuvre, que vous ne croiriez pas si on vous la racontait.

6 For behold, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and impetuous nation, which marcheth through the breadth of the earth, to possess dwelling-places that are not theirs.

Car voici que je suscite les Chaldéens, peuple féroce et impétueux, qui s'avance vers les larges espaces de la terre, pour s'emparer de demeures qui ne sont pas à lui.

7 They are terrible and dreadful: their judgment and their dignity proceed from themselves.

Il est terrible et formidable, et c'est de lui-même que vient son droit et sa grandeur.

8 And their horses are swifter than the leopards, and are more agile than the evening wolves; and their horsemen prance proudly, and their horsemen come from afar: they fly as an eagle that hasteth to devour.

Ses chevaux sont plus légers que les léopards, plus ardents que les loups du soir. Ses cavaliers s'élancent, ses cavaliers viennent de loin, ils volent comme l'aigle pressé de dévorer.

9 They come all of them for violence: the crowd of their faces is forwards, and they gather captives as the sand.

Tout ce peuple vient pour exercer la violence; leurs regards avides se portent en avant; il amasse les captifs comme du sable.

10 Yea, he scoffeth at kings, and princes are a scorn unto him; he derideth every stronghold: for he heapeth up dust, and taketh it.

Lui, il se moque des rois, et les princes sont sa risée; il se rit de toutes les forteresses, il entasse de la poussière et les prend.

11 Then will his mind change, and he will pass on, and become guilty: this his power is become his god.

Puis l'ouragan s'avance et passe; et il se rend coupable; sa force à lui, voilà son Dieu!

12 — Art thou not from everlasting, Jehovah my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. Jehovah, thou hast ordained him for judgment; and thou, O Rock, hast appointed him for correction.

N'es-tu pas dès le commencement, Yahweh, mon Dieu, mon saint? Nous ne mourrons pas. Yahweh, tu as établi ce peuple pour le droit, ô mon Rocher, tu l'as affermi pour châtier.

13 [Thou art] of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on mischief: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, [and] keepest silence when the wicked swalloweth up a [man] more righteous than he?

Tes yeux sont trop purs pour voir le mal, et tu ne peux contempler la souffrance. Pourquoi regarderais-tu les perfides, et te tairais-tu, quand le méchant dévore un plus juste que lui?

14 And thou makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them.

Tu traiterais donc les hommes comme les poissons de la mer, comme les reptiles qui n'ont point de chef!...

15 He taketh up all of them with the hook, he catcheth them in his net, and gathereth them into his drag; therefore he rejoiceth and is glad:

Il prend le tout à l'hameçon, il le tire avec son filet, le rassemble dans ses rets; et c'est pourquoi il est dans la joie, il jubile.

16 therefore he sacrificeth unto his net, and burneth incense unto his drag; for by them his portion is become fat, and his meat dainty.

C'est pourquoi il sacrifie à son filet, et il offre de l'encens à ses rets; car par eux sa portion est grasse, et sa nourriture succulente.

17 Shall he therefore empty his net, and not spare to slay the nations continually?

Continuera-t-il donc de vider son filet, et toujours égorgera-t-il sans pitié les nations!
