1 Kings 22
1 And they continued three years without war between Syria and Israel.
Il y eut repos pendant trois ans; point de guerre entre Aram et Israël.
2 And it came to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel.
Or, la troisième année, Josaphat, roi de Juda, se rendit auprès du roi d’Israël.
3 And the king of Israel said to his servants, Do ye know that Ramoth in Gilead is ours, and we keep quiet without taking it out of the hand of the king of Syria?
Celui-ci dit alors à ses serviteurs: "Ramot en Galaad est à nous, vous ne l’ignorez pas; pourquoi donc nous tenir tranquilles, au lieu de l’arracher aux mains du roi de Syrie?"
4 And he said to Jehoshaphat, Wilt thou go with me to battle to Ramoth-Gilead? And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, I am as thou, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.
Puis il parla ainsi à Josaphat: "Iras-tu en guerre avec moi contre Ramot en Galaad?" Il répondit: "Nous ne faisons qu’un, toi et moi, ton peuple et mon peuple, ta cavalerie et la mienne."
5 And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, Inquire, I pray thee, this day of the word of Jehovah.
Josaphat dit encore au roi d’Israël: "De grâce, consulte donc en ce jour l’oracle du Seigneur."
6 And the king of Israel assembled the prophets, about four hundred men, and said to them, Shall I go against Ramoth-Gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up, and the Lord will give it into the king's hand.
Le roi d’Israël réunit les prophètes, au nombre d’environ quatre cents, et leur dit: "Dois-je aller en guerre contre Ramot en Galaad, ou dois-je m’abstenir?" Ils répondirent: "Va, l’Eternel livrera la ville au pouvoir du roi."
7 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah besides, that we might inquire of him?
Mais Josaphat insista: "N’Y a-t-il pas ici encore un prophète de l’Eternel que nous puissions interroger?
8 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Jehovah; but I hate him, for he prophesies no good concerning me, but evil: [it is] Micah the son of Imlah. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
Il y a bien encore un homme, dit le roi d’Israël, à qui nous pourrions demander ce que dit l’Eternel, mais je le hais, car il ne me prédit jamais rien de bon, toujours du mal. C’Est Mikhayou, fils de Yimla." Josaphat se récria: "Que le roi ne tienne pas un pareil langage!"
9 Then the king of Israel called a chamberlain, and said, Fetch quickly Micah the son of Imlah.
Le roi manda un officier et lui ordonna d’amener à la hâte Mikhayou, fils de Yimia.
10 And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, having put on their robes, sat each on his throne, in the open place at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets prophesied before them.
Cependant, le roi d’Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, revêtus de leurs insignes, étaient assis chacun sur son trône, dans une aire, à l’entrée de la porte de Samarie, et tous les prophètes prophétisaient devant eux.
11 And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made for himself horns of iron, and he said, Thus saith Jehovah: With these shalt thou push the Syrians, until thou have exterminated them.
Sédécias, fils de Kenaana, se fit des cornes de fer et dit: "Telle est la parole du Seigneur: Avec ces cornes tu terrasseras Aram, au point de l’anéantir."
12 And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramoth-Gilead, and prosper; for Jehovah will give it into the king's hand.
Tous les prophètes prédisaient de même et parlaient ainsi: "Monte contre Ramot en Galaad, et tu triompheras: l’Eternel livrera la ville au pouvoir du roi."
13 And the messenger that went to call Micah spoke to him saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets [declare] good to the king with one assent: let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak good.
De son côté, le messager qui était allé appeler Mikhayou lui avait dit: "Les prédictions des prophètes sont unanimement favorables au roi; prononce donc le même oracle qu’eux tous. Annonce le succès."
14 And Micah said, As Jehovah liveth, even what Jehovah shall say to me, that will I speak.
Mais Mikhayou avait répondu: "Vive Dieu! Ce que l’Eternel me dictera, je le dirai."
15 And he came to the king. And the king said to him, Micah, shall we go against Ramoth-Gilead to battle, or shall we forbear? And he said to him, Go up, and prosper; for Jehovah will give it into the hand of the king.
Il vint auprès du roi, qui lui dit: "Mikhayou, irons-nous en guerre contre Ramot en Galaad, ou nous abstiendrons-nous?" Il répondit: "Va, et tu triompheras; l’Eternel livrera la ville au pouvoir du roi."
16 And the king said to him, How many times shall I adjure thee that thou tell me nothing but truth in the name of Jehovah?
Le roi lui dit: "Combien de fois t’adjurerai-je de me dire uniquement la vérité au nom de l’Eternel?"
17 And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. And Jehovah said, These have no master: let them return every man to his house in peace.
Il répondit: "J’Ai vu tout Israël dispersé sur les montagnes, comme un troupeau sans pasteur; et l’Eternel disait: Plus de chefs pour les diriger; qu’ils retournent, chacun chez soi, en paix!"
18 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee that he prophesies no good concerning me, but evil?
Le roi d’Israël dit alors à Josaphat: "Ne t’avais-je pas prévenu que cet homme ne me prédit que le mal et jamais le bien?
19 And he said, Hear therefore the word of Jehovah: I saw Jehovah sitting upon his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him, on his right hand and on his left;
Ecoute donc la parole de l’Eternel, reprit Mikhayou: J’Ai vu le Seigneur assis sur son trône, tandis que toute l’armée céleste se tenait debout près de lui, à droite et à gauche.
20 and Jehovah said, Who shall entice Ahab that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-Gilead? And one said after this manner, and another said after that manner.
Et l’Eternel dit: Qui ira séduire Achab, afin qu’il monte contre Ramot en Galaad, et y succombe? Celui-ci répondit de telle façon, celui-là de telle autre.
21 And there came forth a spirit, and stood before Jehovah, and said, I will entice him.
Mais l’Esprit s’avança droit devant l’Eternel et dit: Moi, je veux l’égarer.—Et comment cela? demanda le Seigneur.
22 And Jehovah said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt entice [him], and also succeed: go forth, and do so.
Il répondit: J’Irai, et je serai un esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de tous ses prophètes.—Tu réussiras à le tromper, reprit le Seigneur; va donc et fais cela.
23 And now, behold, Jehovah has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and Jehovah has spoken evil concerning thee.
Et maintenant, oui, l’Eternel a mis un esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de tous tes prophètes que voici, parce qu’il a résolu ta perte."
24 Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near, and smote Micah upon the cheek, and said, Where now went the Spirit of Jehovah from me to speak to thee?
Alors Sédécias, fils de Kenaana s’approcha de Mikhayou et le frappa au visage, en disant: "Comment l’esprit divin a-t-il passé de moi à toi pour te parler?"
25 And Micah said, Behold, thou shalt see on that day when thou shalt go from chamber to chamber to hide thyself.
Mikhayou répondit: "Tu le verras le jour où tu iras te réfugier de chambre en chambre pour te mettre à l’abri."
26 And the king of Israel said, Take Micah and carry him back to Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king's son;
Le roi d’Israël ordonna aussitôt de conduire Mikhayou auprès d’Amôn, le gouverneur de la ville, et du prince royal Joas,
27 and thou shalt say, Thus says the king: Put this [man] in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace.
à qui il fit dire: "Suivant l’ordre du roi, jetez cet homme en prison et nourrissez-le du pain et de l’eau de misère jusqu’à mon heureux retour.
28 And Micah said, If thou return at all in peace, Jehovah has not spoken by me. And he said, Hearken, O peoples, all of you!
—Ah! Si tu reviens en paix, s’écria Mikhayou, ce n’est pas l’Eternel qui m’aura inspiré." Il ajouta: "Soyez-en témoins, vous tous ici réunis!"
29 And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-Gilead.
Cependant, le roi d’Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, montèrent contre Ramot en Galaad.
30 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and will enter into the battle; but put thou on thy robes. And the king of Israel disguised himself, and went into the battle.
Le roi d’Israël dit à Josaphat: "Moi, je vais me déguiser pour aller au combat, mais toi, revêts ton costume royal," et il alla en guerre, déguisé.
31 And the king of Syria commanded the thirty-two captains of his chariots saying, Fight neither with small nor great, but with the king of Israel only.
Or, le roi de Syrie avait donné l’ordre suivant aux commandants de sa cavalerie, qui étaient au nombre de trente-deux: "Ne dirigez vos coups contre petit ni grand, mais visez uniquement le roi d’Israël.
32 And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, Surely that is the king of Israel; and they turned against him to fight; and Jehoshaphat cried out.
Lorsque les chefs de la cavalerie aperçurent Josaphat, ils se dirent: "Ce n’est autre que le roi d’Israël," et ils marchèrent sur lui pour le frapper. Josaphat poussa des cris.
33 And it came to pass that when the captains of the chariots perceived that it was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him.
Alors, les chefs de la cavalerie reconnurent que ce n’était pas le roi d’Israël et ils se détournèrent.
34 And a man drew a bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel between the fastenings and the corslet. And he said to his charioteer, Turn thy hand, and drive me out of the camp; for I am wounded.
Mais un soldat tira de l’arc au hasard, et atteignit le roi d’Israël au défaut de la cuirasse. Achab dit à son conducteur: "Tourne bride et fais-moi sortir de la mêlée, car je suis grièvement blessé."
35 And the battle increased that day; and the king was stayed up in his chariot against the Syrians, and he died at even; and the blood of the wound ran out into the hollow of the chariot.
La bataille fut rude en ce jour. Cependant le roi était resté debout sur son char en face du Syrien, mais au soir il expira. Le sang de la plaie avait coulé jusqu’au fond du char.
36 And there went the cry throughout the host at the going down of the sun, saying, Every man to his city, and every man to his own country!
Au coucher du soleil, la proclamation suivante passa dans les rangs: "Que chacun retourne dans sa ville et dans son pays!"
37 And the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria.
On ramena Achab mort à Samarie, où il fut enseveli.
38 And one washed the chariot in the pool of Samaria; and the dogs licked his blood, where the harlots bathed: according to the word of Jehovah, which he had spoken.
Tandis qu’on lavait son char auprès de la piscine de Samarie, les chiens léchèrent son sang, et les prostituées se baignaient. Ainsi se réalisa la parole du Seigneur.
39 And the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all that he did, and the ivory house that he built, and all the cities that he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
Le reste de l’histoire d’Achab et tous les faits accomplis par lui, la construction du palais d’ivoire et des villes qu’il avait bâties, tout cela est consigné dans les annales des rois d’Israël.
40 And Ahab slept with his fathers; and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.
Achab s’endormit avec ses pères, et Achazia, son fils, lui succéda.
41 And Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel.
Josaphat, fils d’Asa, était monté sur le trône de Juda la quatrième année du règne d’Achab en Israël.
42 Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Azubah, the daughter of Shilhi.
Il avait trente-cinq ans, à son avènement, et il régna vingt-cinq ans à Jérusalem. Il avait pour mère Azouba, fille de Chilhi.
43 And he walked in all the way of Asa his father; he turned not aside from it, doing what was right in the sight of Jehovah. Only, the high places were not removed: the people offered and burned incense still on the high places.
Il suivit en tout la voie d’Asa, son père, sans s’en détourner; il fit le bien aux yeux de l’Eternel. Toutefois, les hauts-lieux ne disparurent pas; le peuple continua à y offrir les sacrifices et l’encens.
44 And Jehoshaphat was at peace with the king of Israel.
Josaphat fut en paix avec le roi d’Israël.
45 And the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, and his might which he shewed, and how he warred, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
Le reste de l’histoire de Josaphat, ses exploits et ses guerres sont relatés dans les annales des rois de Juda.
46 And the remainder of the sodomites, which were left in the days of his father Asa, he put away from out of the land.
C’Est lui qui extirpa du pays les dernières traces de la prostitution mâle qui subsistait encore du temps d’Asa, son père.
47 And there was no king in Edom: a deputy reigned.
L’Idumée n’avait pas de roi; c’est un gouverneur qui en tint lieu.
48 Jehoshaphat made Tarshish-ships to go to Ophir for gold; but they went not, for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber.
Josaphat avait fait construire la flotte de Tarsis qui devait aller chercher de l’or à Ofir, mais qui n’y parvint pas, car elle fit naufrage à Ecion-Ghéber.
49 Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab to Jehoshaphat, Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships. But Jehoshaphat would not.
Achazia, fils d’Achab, dit alors à Josaphat: "Laissons nos équipages naviguer de conserve," mais il refusa.
50 And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father; and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.
Josaphat s’endormit avec ses pères, et fut enseveli près de ses ancêtres, dans la Cité de son aïeul David. Son fils Joram lui succéda.
51 Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah; and he reigned two years over Israel.
Achazia, fils d’Achab, monta sur le trône d’Israël, à Samarie, la dix-septième année du règne de Josaphat en Juda; il régna deux ans sur Israël.
52 And he did evil in the sight of Jehovah, and walked in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
Il fit le mal aux yeux de l’Eternel, marchant dans la voie de son père et de sa mère, et de Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, qui avait induit Israël au péché.
53 And he served Baal, and worshipped him, and provoked Jehovah the God of Israel to anger, according to all that his father had done.
Il servit Baal et lui rendit hommage, provoquant le courroux de l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, tout comme avait fait son père.
