Genesis 4
1 Truly, Adam knew his wife Eve, who conceived and gave birth to Cain, saying, “I have obtained a man through God.”
Adam connut Eve, sa femme; elle conçut et enfanta Caïn, et elle dit: " J'ai acquis un homme avec le secours de Yahweh! "
2 And again she gave birth to his brother Abel. But Abel was a pastor of sheep, and Cain was a farmer.
Elle enfanta encore Abel, son frère. Abel fut pasteur de brebis, et Caïn était laboureur.
3 Then it happened, after many days, that Cain offered gifts to the Lord, from the fruits of the earth.
Au bout de quelque temps, Caïn offrit des produits de la terre en oblation à Yahweh;
4 Abel likewise offered from the firstborn of his flock, and from their fat. And the Lord looked with favor on Abel and his gifts.
Abel, de son côté, offrit des premiers-nés de son troupeau et de leur graisse. Yahweh regarda Abel et son offrande;
5 Yet in truth, he did not look with favor on Cain and his gifts. And Cain was vehemently angry, and his countenance fell.
mais il ne regarda pas Caïn et son offrande. Caïn en fut très irrité et son visage fut abattu.
6 And the Lord said to him: “Why are you angry? And why is your face fallen?
Yahweh dit à Caïn: " Pourquoi es-tu irrité, et pourquoi ton visage est-il abattu?
7 If you behave well, will you not receive? But if you behave badly, will not sin at once be present at the door? And so its desire will be within you, and you will be dominated by it.”
Si tu fais bien, ne seras-tu pas agréé? Et si tu ne fais pas bien, le péché ne se couche-t-il pas à ta porte? Son désir se tourne vers toi; mais toi, tu dois dominer sur lui. "
8 And Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go outside.” And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and he put him to death.
Caïn dit à Abel, son frère: " Allons aux champs. " Et, comme ils étaient dans les champs, Caïn s'éleva contre Abel, son frère, et le tua.
9 And the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” And he responded: “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Et Yahweh dit à Caïn: " Où est Abel, ton frère? " Il répondit: " Je ne sais pas; suis-je le gardien de mon frère? "
10 And he said to him: “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the land.
Yahweh dit: " Qu'as-tu fait? La voix du sang de ton frère crie de la terre jusqu'à moi.
11 Now, therefore, you will be cursed upon the land, which opened its mouth and received the blood of your brother at your hand.
Maintenant tu es maudit de la terre, qui a ouvert sa bouche pour recevoir de ta main le sang de ton frère.
12 When you work it, it will not give you its fruit; a vagrant and a fugitive shall you be upon the land.”
Quand tu cultiveras la terre, elle ne donnera plus ses fruits; tu seras errant et fugitif sur la terre. "
13 And Cain said to the Lord: “My iniquity is too great to deserve kindness.
Caïn dit à Yahweh: " Ma peine est trop grande pour que je la puisse supporter.
14 Behold, you have cast me out this day before the face of the earth, and from your face I will be hidden; and I will be a vagrant and a fugitive on the earth. Therefore, anyone who finds me will kill me.”
Voici que vous me chassez aujourd'hui de cette terre, et je serai caché loin de votre face; je serai errant et fugitif sur la terre, et quiconque me trouvera me tuera. "
15 And the Lord said to him: “By no means will it be so; rather, whoever would kill Cain, will be punished sevenfold.” And the Lord placed a seal upon Cain, so that anyone who found him would not put him to death.
Yahweh lui dit: " Eh bien, si quelqu'un tue Caïn, Caïn sera vengé sept fois. " Et Yahweh mit un signe sur Caïn, afin que quiconque le rencontrerait ne le tuât pas.
16 And so Cain, departing from the face of the Lord, lived as a fugitive on the earth, toward the eastern region of Eden.
Puis Caïn s'éloigna de devant Yahweh, et il habita dans le pays de Nod, à l'orient d'Eden.
17 Then Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. And he built a city, and he called its name by the name of his son, Enoch.
Caïn connut sa femme; elle conçut et enfanta Hénoch. Et il se mit à bâtir une ville qu'il appela Hénoch, du nom de son fils.
18 Thereafter, Enoch conceived Irad, and Irad conceived Mahujael, and Mahujael conceived Mathusael, and Mathusael conceived Lamech.
Irad naquit à Hénoch, et il engendra Maviaël; Maviaël engendra Mathusaël, et Mathusaël engendra Lamech.
19 Lamech took two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.
Lamech prit deux femmes; le nom de l'une était Ada, et celui de la seconde Sella.
20 And Adah conceived Jabel, who was the father of those who live in tents and are shepherds.
Ada enfanta Jabel: il a été le père de ceux qui habitent sous des tentes et au milieu de troupeaux.
21 And the name of his brother was Jubal; he was the father of those who sing to the harp and the organ.
Le nom de son frère était Jubal: il a été le père de tous ceux qui jouent de la harpe et du chalumeau.
22 Zillah also conceived Tubalcain, who was a hammerer and artisan in every work of brass and iron. In fact, the sister of Tubalcain was Noema.
Sella, de son côté, enfanta Tubal-Caïn, qui forgeait toute espèce d'instruments tranchants d'airain et de fer. La sœur de Tubal-Caïn était Noéma.
23 And Lamech said to his wives Adah and Zillah: “Listen to my voice, you wives of Lamech, pay attention to my speech. For I have killed a man to my own harm, and an adolescent to my own bruising.
Lamech dit à ses femmes: Ada et Sella, entendez ma voix, femmes de Lamech, écoutez ma parole: J'ai tué un homme pour ma blessure, et un jeune homme pour ma meurtrissure.
24 Sevenfold vengeance will be given for Cain, but for Lamech, seventy-seven times.”
Caïn sera vengé sept fois, et Lamech soixante-dix-sept fois.
25 Adam also knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and she called his name Seth, saying, “God has given me another offspring, in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.”
Adam connut encore sa femme; elle enfanta un fils et l'appela Seth, car, dit-elle, " Dieu m'a donné une postérité à la place d'Abel, que Caïn a tué. "
26 But to Seth also was born a son, whom he called Enos. This one began to invoke the name of the Lord.
Seth eut aussi un fils, qu'il appela Enos. Ce fut alors que l'on commença à invoquer le nom de Yahweh.
