Amos 5

1 Listen to this word, which I lift over you in lamentation. The house of Israel has fallen, and it will no longer rise again.

Ecoutez cette parole, chant lugubre que j’entonne sur vous: La maison d’Israël est tombée, elle ne se relèvera plus.

2 The virgin of Israel has been thrown onto her land, there is no one who can raise her up.

La vierge d’Israël a été jetée par terre, et il n’y a personne qui la rétablisse.

3 For thus says the Lord God: In the city from which a thousand departed, a hundred will remain, and in that from which a hundred departed, ten will remain, in the house of Israel.

Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu: Dans la ville de laquelle sortaient mille hommes, il en restera cent; et dans celle de laquelle sortaient cent, il en restera dix, dans la maison d’Israël.

4 For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel: Seek me and you will live.

Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur à la maison d’Israël: Cherchez-moi et vous vivrez.

5 But do not be willing to seek Bethel, and do not be willing to enter Gilgal, and you will not cross into Beer-sheba. For Gilgal will be led into captivity, and Bethel will be useless.

Et ne cherchez point Béthel, et n’allez point à Galgala, et vous ne passerez point à Bersabée, parce que Galgala sera emmenée captive, et Béthel sera réduite à rien.

6 Seek the Lord and live. Otherwise, the house of Joseph may be destroyed with fire, and it will devour, and there will be no one who can extinguish Bethel.

Cherchez le Seigneur, et vivez; de peur que la maison de Joseph ne s’embrase comme un feu; et le feu la dévorera, et il n’y aura personne qui éteigne Béthel.

7 You turn judgment into wormwood, and you abandon justice on earth.

C’est vous qui changez en absinthe le jugement, et qui abandonnez la justice sur la terre.

8 The Maker of Arcturus and Orion, who turns darkness into daybreak and who changes day into night; who calls forth the waters of the sea and who pours them out over the face of the earth: The Lord is his name.

Cherchez qui a fait Arcturus et Orion, qui convertit les ténèbres en lumière du matin, et qui change le jour en nuit, qui appelle les eaux de la mer et la répand sur la face de la terre; le Seigneur est son nom.

9 It is he who smiles destruction on the healthy, and who brings pillaging upon the powerful.

Il sourit en amenant la ruine sur le fort, et il porte le ravage sur le puissant.

10 They held hatred for the one who corrects at the gate, and they have abhorred the one who speaks perfectly.

Ils ont eu en haine celui qui les reprenait à la porte; celui qui parlait à bon droit, ils l’ont abominé.

11 Therefore, on his behalf, because you have torn apart the poor and stolen choice prey from him: you will build houses with square stones and you will not dwell in them; you will plant the most delightful vineyards, and you will not drink wine from them.

C’est pourquoi, parce que vous dépouilliez le pauvre, que vous lui enleviez un butin précieux, vous bâtirez des maisons en pierre de taille, et vous n’y habiterez pas; vous planterez des vignes délicieuses, et vous n’en boirez pas le vin.

12 For I know your many wicked deeds and the strength of your sins, you enemies of the just, accepting bribes, and depriving the poor at the gate.

Parce que j’ai connu vos nombreux crimes, et vos graves péchés; ennemis du juste, vous recevez des présents, et vous déprimez les pauvres à la porte.

13 Therefore, the prudent will be silent at that time, for it is an evil time.

C’est pour cela que l’homme prudent en ce temps-là se tiendra en silence, parce que le temps est mauvais.

14 Seek good and not evil, so that you may live. And the Lord God of hosts will be with you, just as you have asked.

Cherchez le bien et non le mal, afin que vous viviez, et le Seigneur Dieu des armées sera avec vous, comme vous avez dit.

15 Hate evil and love good, and establish judgment at the gate. Perhaps then the Lord God of hosts may have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.

Haïssez le mal, et aimez le bien, et établissez à la porte de la ville le jugement; peut-être que le Seigneur Dieu des armées aura pitié des restes de Joseph.

16 Therefore, thus says the Lord God of hosts, the Sovereign: In all the streets, there will be wailing. And in every place where they are outdoors, they will say, “Woe, woe!” And they will call the farmer to mourn, and those who know mourning to lamentation.

À cause de ceci, voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu des armées, le dominateur: Sur toutes les places publiques, lamentations, et dans tous les lieux qui sont hors de la ville, on dira: Malheur! malheur! et on appellera le laboureur au deuil, et aux lamentations ceux qui savent se lamenter.

17 And in all the vineyards there will be wailing. For I will cross through your midst, says the Lord.

Et dans toutes les vignes il y aura des lamentations, parce que je passerai au milieu de toi, dit le Seigneur.

18 Woe to those who desire the day of the Lord. What is it to you? The day of the Lord is this: darkness and not light.

Malheur à ceux qui désirent le jour du Seigneur! pourquoi le désirer pour vous? Ce jour du Seigneur sera pour vous ténèbres et non lumière.

19 It is as if a man flees from the face of a lion, only to have a bear meet him; or, he enters a house and leans with his hand against the wall, only to have a snake bite him.

Comme si un homme fuit à la face du lion, et qu’il rencontre l’ours; et qu’il entre dans la maison, et appuie de sa main sur la muraille, et que le serpent le morde.

20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it?

Est-ce que le jour du Seigneur ne sera pas ténèbres et non lumière; obscurité et non splendeur?

21 I hate and have rejected your feasts; and I will not accept the odor from your gatherings.

Je hais, et j’ai rejeté vos fêtes; je ne respirerai pas l’odeur de vos assemblées.

22 For if you offer me holocausts and your gifts, I will not receive them; and I will not look upon the vows of your fatness.

Que si vous m’offrez des holocaustes et des présents, je ne les recevrai pas; et les grasses victimes qui accompagneront vos vœux, je ne les regarderai pas.

23 Take away from me the tumult of your songs, and I will not listen to the canticles of your lyre.

Eloigne de moi le tumulte de tes cantiques; et les airs de ta lyre, je ne les écouterai pas.

24 And judgment will be revealed like water, and justice like a mighty torrent.

Et le jugement se découvrira comme l’eau, et la justice comme un torrent violent.

25 Was it you who offered victims and sacrifices to me in the desert for forty years, house of Israel?

Est-ce que vous m’avez offert des hosties et des sacrifices dans le désert pendant quarante ans, maison d’Israël?

26 And you carried a tabernacle for your Moloch and the image of your idols: the star of your god, which you made for yourselves.

Et vous avez porté le tabernacle de votre Moloch, et l’image de vos idoles, l’étoile de votre dieu, que vous vous êtes fait.

27 And I will cause you to go into captivity across Damascus, says the Lord. The God of hosts is his name.

Aussi je vous ferai émigrer au-delà de Damas, dit le Seigneur; car le Dieu des armées est son nom.
