Acts 14

1 Now it happened in Iconium that they entered together into the synagogue of the Jews, and they spoke in such a way that a copious multitude of both Jews and Greeks believed.

A Iconium, Paul et Barnabas entrèrent ensemble dans la synagogue des Juifs, et ils parlèrent de telle sorte qu'il y eut une grande multitude de Juifs et de Grecs qui devinrent croyants.

2 Yet truly, the Jews who were unbelieving had incited and enflamed the souls of the Gentiles against the brothers.

Mais les Juifs restés incrédules excitèrent et aigrirent l'esprit des Païens contre les frères.

3 And so, they remained for a long time, acting faithfully in the Lord, offering testimony to the Word of his grace, providing signs and wonders done by their hands.

Cependant, Paul et Barnabas séjournèrent là assez longtemps, pleins de courage et de confiance dans le Seigneur, qui rendait témoignage à la parole de sa grâce, en faisant par leurs mains des miracles et des prodiges.

4 Then the multitude of the city was divided. And certainly, some were with the Jews, yet truly others were with the Apostles.

Mais le peuple de la ville se divisa; les uns étaient pour les Juifs, les autres pour les apôtres.

5 Now when an assault had been planned by the Gentiles and the Jews with their leaders, so that they might treat them with contempt and stone them,

Et comme les Païens et les Juifs, avec leurs chefs, se soulevaient pour les maltraiter et les lapider,

6 they, realizing this, fled together to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the entire surrounding region.

les apôtres, en ayant eu connaissance, se réfugièrent dans les villes de la Lycaonie, à Lystre, à Derbe, et dans les environs,

7 And they were evangelizing in that place.

et ils y annoncèrent l'Évangile.

8 And a certain man was sitting at Lystra, disabled in his feet, lame from his mother’s womb, who had never walked.

Il y avait à Lystre un homme paralysé des jambes, impotent de naissance, et qui n'avait jamais marché.

9 This man heard Paul speaking. And Paul, gazing at him intently, and perceiving that he had faith, so that he might be healed,

Il était assis, et il écoutait parler Paul. Celui-ci, ayant arrêté les yeux sur lui et voyant qu'il avait la foi pour être guéri,

10 said with a loud voice, “Stand upright upon your feet!” And he leaped up and walked around.

dit d'une voix forte: Lève-toi, et tiens-toi droit sur tes pieds. Il se leva d'un saut, et il se mit à marcher.

11 But when the crowds had seen what Paul had done, they lifted up their voice in the Lycaonian language, saying, “The gods, having taken the likenesses of men, have descended to us!”

Le peuple, ayant vu ce que Paul avait fait, s'écria en langue lycaonienne: Les dieux, ayant pris une forme humaine, sont descendus vers nous!

12 And they called Barnabas, ‘Jupiter,’ yet truly they called Paul, ‘Mercury,’ because he was the lead speaker.

Et ils appelaient Barnabas Jupiter, et Paul Mercure, parce que c'était lui qui portait la parole.

13 Also, the priest of Jupiter, who was outside the city, in front of the gate, bringing in oxen and garlands, was willing to offer sacrifice with the people.

Le prêtre de Jupiter, dont le temple est à l'entrée de la ville, vint devant les portes avec des taureaux et des couronnes, et il voulait, d'accord avec la foule, offrir un sacrifice.

14 And as soon as the Apostles, Barnabas and Paul, had heard this, tearing their tunics, they leapt into the crowd, crying out

Mais les apôtres, Barnabas et Paul, l'ayant appris, déchirèrent leurs vêtements et se jetèrent au milieu de la foule en s'écriant:

15 and saying: “Men, why would you do this? We also are mortals, men like yourselves, preaching to you to be converted, from these vain things, to the living God, who made heaven and earth and the sea and all that is in them.

Amis, pourquoi faites-vous cela? Nous ne sommes que des hommes, de la même nature que vous; et nous vous annonçons l'Évangile, afin que vous vous détourniez de ces vaines idoles, et que vous vous convertissiez au Dieu vivant, qui a fait le ciel, la terre, la mer, et tout ce qui s'y trouve.

16 In previous generations, he permitted all nations to walk in their own ways.

Il a laissé dans les siècles passés toutes les nations suivre leurs propres voies.

17 But certainly, he did not leave himself without testimony, doing good from heaven, giving rains and fruitful seasons, filling their hearts with food and gladness.”

Néanmoins, il n'a cessé, par ses bienfaits, de donner des témoignages de ce qu'il est, en vous envoyant du ciel des pluies et les saisons fertiles, en vous accordant la nourriture avec abondance, et en remplissant vos coeurs de joie.

18 And by saying these things, they were barely able to restrain the crowds from immolating to them.

Malgré ces paroles, ils ne parvinrent que difficilement à empêcher le peuple de leur offrir un sacrifice.

19 Now certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium arrived there. And having persuaded the crowd, they stoned Paul and dragged him outside of the city, thinking him to be dead.

Cependant, il survint, d'Antioche et d' Iconium, des Juifs qui gagnèrent le peuple; et, ayant lapidé Paul, ils le traînèrent hors de la ville, pensant qu'il était mort.

20 But as the disciples were standing around him, he got up and entered the city. And the next day, he set out with Barnabas for Derbe.

Mais, les disciples s'étant réunis autour de lui, il se releva et entra dans la ville. Le lendemain, il s'en alla avec Barnabas à Derbe.

21 And when they had evangelized that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,

Après avoir annoncé l'Évangile dans cette ville, et y avoir fait un assez grand nombre de disciples, ils retournèrent à Antioche de Pisidie. Lystre, Iconie et Antioche,

22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them that they should remain always in the faith, and that it is necessary for us to enter into the kingdom of God through many tribulations.

fortifiant l'âme des disciples, les exhortant à persévérer dans la foi, et les avertissant que c'est par beaucoup d'afflictions qu'il nous faut entrer dans le royaume de Dieu.

23 And when they had established priests for them in each church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, in whom they believed.

Ils nommèrent des anciens dans chaque Église; et, après avoir prié et jeûné, ils les recommandèrent au Seigneur, en qui ils avaient cru.

24 And traveling by way of Pisidia, they arrived in Pamphylia.

Ayant traversé la Pisidie, ils vinrent en Pamphylie.

25 And having spoken the word of the Lord in Perga, they went down into Attalia.

Puis, après avoir annoncé la parole à Perge, ils descendirent à Attalie.

26 And from there, they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work which they had now accomplished.

De là, ils firent voile vers Antioche d'où ils étaient partis, recommandés à la grâce de Dieu pour l'oeuvre qu'ils venaient d'accomplir.

27 And when they had arrived and had gathered together the church, they related what great things God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

Quand ils furent arrivés, et qu'ils eurent assemblé l'Eglise, ils racontèrent toutes les choses que Dieu avait faites par eux, et comment il avait ouvert aux Païens la porte de la foi.

28 And they remained for no small amount of time with the disciples.

Et ils demeurèrent là longtemps avec les disciples.
