Exodus 18

1 And Jothor the priest of Madiam, the father-in-law of Moses, heard of all that the Lord did to his people Israel; for the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt.

Ora Jethro, sacerdote de Midian, sogro de Moisés, ouviu todas as coisas que Deus tinha feito a Moisés e a Israel seu povo: como o Senhor tinha tirado a Israel do Egito.

2 And Jothor the father-in-law of Moses, took Sepphora the wife of Moses after she had been sent away,

E Jethro, sogro de Moisés, tomou a Zippora, a mulher de Moisés, depois que ele lha enviara,

3 and her two sons: the name of the one was Gersam, [his father] saying, I was a sojourner in a strange land; —

Com seus dois filhos, dos quais um se chamava Gerson; porque disse: Eu fui peregrino em terra estranha;

4 and the name of the second Eliezer, saying, For the God of my father [is] my helper, and he has rescued me out of the hand of Pharao.

E o outro se chamava Eliezer; porque disse: O Deus de meu pai foi por minha ajuda, e me livrou da espada de faraó.

5 And Jothor the father-in-law of Moses, and his sons and his wife, went forth to Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped on the mount of God.

Vindo pois Jethro, o sogro de Moisés, com seus filhos e com sua mulher, a Moisés no deserto, ao monte de Deus, onde se tinha acampado,

6 And it was told Moses, saying, Behold, your father-in-law Jothor is coming to you, and your wife and two sons with him.

Disse a Moisés: Eu, teu sogro Jethro, venho a ti, com tua mulher, e seus dois filhos com ela.

7 And Moses went forth to meet his father-in-law, and did him reverence, and kissed him, and they embraced each other, and he brought them into the tent.

Então saiu Moisés ao encontro de seu sogro, e inclinou-se, e beijou-o, e perguntaram um ao outro como estavam, e entraram na tenda.

8 And Moses related to his father-in-law all things that the Lord did to Pharao and all the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the labour that had befallen them in the way, and that the Lord had rescued them out of the hand of Pharao, and out of the hand of the Egyptians.

E Moisés contou a seu sogro todas as coisas que o Senhor tinha feito a faraó e aos egípcios por amor de Israel, e todo o trabalho que passaram no caminho, e como o Senhor os livrara.

9 And Jothor was amazed at all the good things which the Lord did to them, forasmuch as he rescued them out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharao.

E alegrou-se Jethro de todo o bem que o Senhor tinha feito a Israel, livrando-o da mão dos egípcios.

10 And Jothor said, Blessed be the Lord, because he has rescued them out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharao.

E Jethro disse: bendito seja o Senhor, que vos livrou das mãos dos egípcios e da mão de faraó; que livrou a este povo de debaixo da mão dos egípcios.

11 Now know I that the Lord is great above all gods, because of this, wherein they attacked them.

Agora sei que o Senhor é maior que todos os deuses: porque na coisa, em que se ensoberbeceram, os sobrepujou.

12 And Jothor the father-in-law of Moses took whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for God, for Aaron and all the elders of Israel came to eat bread with the father-in-law of Moses before God.

Então tomou Jethro, o sogro de Moisés, holocausto e sacrifícios para Deus: e veio Aarão, e todos os anciãos de Israel, para comerem pão com o sogro de Moisés diante de Deus.

13 And it came to pass after the morrow that Moses sat to judge the people, and all the people stood by Moses from morning till evening.

E aconteceu que, ao outro dia, Moisés assentou-se para julgar o povo; e o povo estava em pé diante de Moisés desde a manhã até à tarde

14 And Jothor having seen all that [Moses] did to the people, says, What is this that you do to the people? therefore sit you alone, and all the people stand by you from morning till evening?

Vendo pois o sogro de Moisés tudo o que ele fazia ao povo, disse: Que é isto, que tu fazes as povo? porque te assentas só, e todo o povo está em pé diante de ti, desde a manhã até à tarde?

15 And Moses says to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to seek judgement from God.

Então disse Moisés a seu sogro: É porque este povo vem a mim, para consultar a Deus:

16 For whenever there is a dispute amongst them, and they come to me, I give judgement upon each, and I teach them the ordinances of God and his law.

Quando tem algum negócio vem a mim, para que eu julgue entre um e outro, e lhes declare os estatutos de Deus, e as suas leis.

17 And the father-in-law of Moses said to him, You do not this thing rightly,

O sogro de Moisés porém lhe disse: Não é bom o que fazes.

18 you will wear away with intolerable weariness, both those and all this people which is with you: this thing is hard, you will not be able to endure it yourself alone.

Totalmente desfalecerás, assim tu, como este povo que está contigo: porque este negócio é mui difícil para ti; tu só não o podes fazer.

19 Now then listen to me, and I will advise you, and God shall be with you: be you to the people in the things pertaining to God, and you shall bring their matters to God.

Ouve agora minha voz, eu te aconselharei, e Deus será contigo: Sê tu pelo povo diante de Deus, e leva tu as coisas a Deus;

20 And you shall testify to them the ordinances of God and his law, and you shall show to them the ways in which they shall walk, and the works which they shall do.

E declara-lhes os estatutos e as leis, e faze-lhes saber o caminho em que devem andar, e a obra que devem fazer.

21 And do you look out for yourself out of all the people able men, fearing God, righteous men, hating pride, and you shall set over the people captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens.

E tu dentre todo o povo procura homens capazes, tementes a Deus, homens de verdade, que aborrecem a avareza; e põe-nos sobre eles por maiorais de mil, maiorais de cento, maiorais de cincoênta, e maiorais de dez;

22 And they shall judge the people at all times, and the too burdensome matter they shall bring to you, but they shall judge the smaller cases; so they shall relieve you and help you.

Para que julguem este povo em tempo; e seja que todo o negócio pequeno eles o julguem: assim a ti mesmo te aliviarás da carga, e eles a levarão contigo.

23 If you will do this thing, God shall strengthen you, and you shall be able to attend, and all this people shall come with peace into their own place.

Se isto fizeres, e Deus to mandar, poderás então subsistir: assim também todo este povo em paz virá ao seu lugar.

24 And Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did whatever he said to him.

E Moisés deu ouvidos à voz de seu sogro, e fez tudo quanto tinha dito;

25 And Moses chose out able men out of all Israel, and he made them captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties and captains of tens over the people.

E escolheu Moisés homens capazes, de todo o Israel, e os pôs por cabeças sobre o povo: maiorais de mil, maiorais de cento, maiorais de cincoênta, e maiorais de dez.

26 And they judged the people at all times; and every too burdensome matter they brought to Moses, but every light matter they judged themselves.

E eles julgaram o povo em todo o tempo; o negócio árduo trouxeram a Moisés, e todo o negócio pequeno julgaram eles.

27 And Moses dismissed his father-in-law, and he returned to his own land.

Então despediu Moisés o seu sogro, o qual se foi à sua terra.
