Psalms 78
1 [A Psalm] of instruction for Asaph. Give heed, O my people, to my law: incline your ear to the words of my mouth.
Cantique d'Asaph. Ecoute, ô mon peuple, mon enseignement; prête l'oreille aux paroles de ma bouche.
2 I will open my mouth in parables: I will utter dark sayings [which have been] from the beginning.
Je vais ouvrir ma bouche pour dire des sentences, je publierai les mystères des temps anciens.
3 All which we have heard and known, and our fathers have declared to us.
Ce que nous avons entendu, ce que nous avons appris, ce que nos pères nous ont raconté,
4 They were not hid from their children to a second generations; [the fathers] declaring the praises of the Lord, and his mighty acts, and his wonders which he wrought.
nous ne le cacherons pas à leurs enfants; nous dirons à la génération future les louanges de Yahweh, et sa puissance, et les prodiges qu'il a opérés.
5 And he raised up a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, to make it known to their children:
Il a mis une règle en Jacob, il a établi une loi en Israël, qu'il a enjoint à nos pères d'apprendre à leurs enfants,
6 that another generation might know, even the sons which should be born; and they should arise and declare them to their children.
pour qu'elles soient connues des générations suivantes, des enfants qui naîtraient et qui se lèveraient, pour les raconter à leur tour à leurs enfants.
7 That they might set their hope on God, and not forget the works of God, but diligently seek his commandments.
Ainsi ils mettraient en Dieu leur confiance, ils n'oublieraient point les œuvres de Dieu, et ils observeraient ses préceptes;
8 That they should not be as their fathers, a perverse and provoking generation; a generation which set not its heart aright, and its spirit was not steadfast with God.
ils ne seraient point, comme leurs pères, une race indocile et rebelle, une race au cœur volage, dont l'esprit n'est pas fidèle à Dieu.
9 The children of Ephraim, bending and shooting [with] the bow, turned [back] in the day of battle.
Les fils d'Ephraïm, archers habiles à tirer de l'arc, ont tourné le dos au jour du combat;
10 They kept not the covenant of God, and would not walk in his law.
ils n'ont pas gardé l'alliance de Dieu, ils ont refusé de marcher selon sa loi;
11 And they forgot his benefits, and his miracles which he [had] shewed them;
ils ont mis en oubli ses grandes œuvres, et les merveilles qu'il leur avait montrées.
12 the miracles which he wrought before their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the plain of Tanes.
Devant leurs pères, il avait fait des prodiges, au pays de l'Egypte, dans les campagnes de Tanis.
13 He clave the sea, and led them through: he made the waters to stand as [in] a bottle.
Il ouvrit la mer pour les faire passer; Il retint les eaux dressées comme un monceau
14 And he guided them with a cloud by day, and all the night with a light of fire.
Il les conduisit le jour par la nuée, et toute la nuit par un feu brillant.
15 he clave a rock in the wilderness, and made them drink as in a great deep.
Il fendit les rochers dans le désert, et il donna à boire comme des flots abondants.
16 And he brought water out of the rock, and caused waters to flow down as rivers.
Du rocher il fit jaillir des ruisseaux, et couler l'eau par torrents.
17 And they sinned yet more against him; they provoked the Most High in the wilderness.
Mais ils continuèrent de pécher contre lui, de se révolter contre le Très-Haut dans le désert.
18 And they tempted God in their hearts, in asking meat for [the desire of] their souls.
Ils tentèrent Dieu dans leur cœur, en demandant de la nourriture selon leur convoitise.
19 They spoke also against God, and said, Will God be able to prepare a table in the wilderness?
Ils parlèrent contre Dieu et dirent: " Dieu pourra-t-il dresser une table dans le désert?
20 Forasmuch as he smote the rock, and the waters flowed, and the torrents ran abundantly; will he be able also to give bread, or prepare a table for his people?
Voici qu'il a frappé le rocher, et des eaux ont coulé, et des torrents se sont répandus; pourra-t-il aussi nous donner du pain ou bien procurer de la viande à son peuple? "
21 Therefore the Lord heard, and was provoked: and fire was kindled in Jacob, and wrath went up against Israel.
Yahweh entendit et il fut irrité, un feu s'alluma contre Jacob, et la colère s'éleva contre Israël,
22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation.
parce qu'ils n'avaient pas eu foi en Dieu et n'avaient pas espéré en son secours.
23 Yet he commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
Cependant il commanda aux nuées d'en haut, et il ouvrit les portes du ciel;
24 and rained upon them manna to eat, and gave them the bread of heaven.
il fit pleuvoir sur eux la manne pour les nourrir, et leur donna le froment du ciel.
25 Man ate angels' bread; he sent them provision to the full.
Chacun mangea le pain des forts, Il leur envoya de la nourriture à satiété.
26 He removed the south wind from heaven; and by his might he brought in the south-west wind.
Il fit souffler dans le ciel le vent d'orient, il amena par sa puissance le vent du midi;
27 And he rained upon them flesh like dust, and feathered birds like the sand of the seas.
il fit pleuvoir sur eux la viande comme de la poussière, et les oiseaux ailés comme le sable des mers.
28 And they fell into the midst of their camp, round about their tents.
Il les fit tomber au milieu de leur camp, autour de leurs tentes.
29 So they ate, and were completely filled; and he gave them their desire.
Ils mangèrent et se rassasièrent à l'excès; Dieu leur donna ce qu'ils avaient désiré.
30 They were not disappointed of their desire: [but] when their food was yet in their mouth,
Ils n'avaient pas encore satisfait leur convoitise, et leur nourriture était encore à leur bouche,
31 then the indignation of God rose up against them, and slew the fattest of them, and overthrew the choice men of Israel.
quand la colère de Dieu s'éleva contre eux; il frappa de mort les mieux repus, il abattit les jeunes hommes d'Israël.
32 In the midst of all this they sinned yet more, and believed not his miracles.
Après tout cela, ils péchèrent encore, et n'eurent pas foi dans ses prodiges.
33 And their days were consumed in vanity, and their years with anxiety.
Alors il dissipa leurs jours comme un souffle, et leurs années par une fin soudaine.
34 When he slew them, they sought him: and they returned and called betimes upon God.
Quand il les frappait de mort, ils le cherchaient, ils revenaient, empressés à retrouver Dieu,
35 And they remembered that God was their helper, and the most high God was their redeemer.
ils se rappelaient que Dieu était leur rocher, et le Dieu Très-Haut leur libérateur.
36 Yet they loved him [only] with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue.
Mais ils le trompaient par leurs paroles, et leur langue lui mentait;
37 For their heart [was] not right with him, neither were they steadfast in his covenant.
leur cœur n'était pas ferme avec lui, ils n'étaient pas fidèles à son alliance.
38 But he is compassionate, and will forgive their sins, and will not destroy [them]: yea, he will frequently turn away his wrath, and will not kindle all his anger.
Mais lui est miséricordieux: il pardonne le péché et ne détruit pas; souvent il retint sa colère, et ne se livra pas à toute sa fureur.
39 And he remembered that they are flesh; a wind that passes away, and returns not.
Il se souvenait qu'ils n'étaient que chair, un souffle qui s'en va et ne revient plus.
40 How often did they provoke him in the wilderness, [and] anger him in a dry land!
Que de fois ils se révoltèrent contre lui dans le désert, ils l'irritèrent dans la solitude!
41 Yea, they turned back, and tempted God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
Ils ne cessèrent de tenter Dieu et de provoquer le Saint d'Israël.
42 They remembered not his hand, the day in which he delivered them from the hand of the oppressor.
Ils ne se souvinrent plus de sa puissance, du jour où il les délivra de l'oppresseur,
43 How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Tanes:
où il montra ses prodiges en Egypte, ses actions merveilleuses dans les campagnes de Tanis.
44 and had changed their rivers into blood; and their streams, that they should not drink.
Il changea leurs fleuves en sang, et ils ne purent boire à leurs ruisseaux.
45 He sent against them the dog-fly, and it devoured them; and the frog, and it spoiled them.
Il envoya contre eux le moucheron qui les dévora, et la grenouille qui les fit périr.
46 And he gave their fruit to the canker worm, and their labours to the locust.
Il livra leurs récoltes à la sauterelle, le produit de leur travail à ses essaims.
47 He killed their vines with hail, and their sycamores with frost.
Il détruisit leurs vignes par la grêle, et leurs sycomores par les grêlons.
48 And he gave up their cattle to hail, and their substance to the fire.
Il abandonna leur bétail à la grêle, et leurs troupeaux aux coups de la foudre.
49 He sent out against them the fury of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and affliction, a message by evil angels.
Il déchaîna contre eux le feu de son courroux, la fureur, la rage et la détresse, toute une armée d'anges de malheur.
50 He made a way for his wrath; he spared not their souls from death, but consigned their cattle to death;
Il donna libre carrière à sa colère, il ne sauva pas leur âme de la mort, il livra leur vie à la destruction.
51 and smote every first-born in the land of Egypt; the first-fruits of their labours in the tents of Cham.
Il frappa tous les premiers-nés en Egypte, les prémices de la force sous les tentes de Cham.
52 And he removed his people like sheep; he led them as a flock in the wilderness.
Il fit partir son peuple comme des brebis, il les mena comme un troupeau dans le désert.
53 And he guided them with hope, and they feared not: but the sea covered their enemies.
Il les dirigea sûrement, sans qu'ils eussent rien à craindre, et la mer engloutit leurs ennemis.
54 And he brought them in to the mountain of his sanctuary, this mountain which his right hand had purchased.
Il les fit arriver jusqu'à sa frontière sainte, jusqu'à la montagne que sa droite a conquise.
55 And he cast out the nations from before them, and made them to inherit by a line of inheritance, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
Il chassa les nations devant eux, leur assigna par le sort leur part d'héritage, et fit habiter dans leurs tentes les tribus d'Israël.
56 Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies.
Cependant ils ont encore tenté et provoqué le Dieu Très-Haut, et ils n'ont pas observé ses ordonnances.
57 And they turned back, and broke covenant, even as also their fathers: they became like a crooked bow.
Ils se sont détournés et ont été infidèles comme leurs pères, ils se sont détournés comme un arc trompeur.
58 And they provoked him with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.
Ils l'ont irrité par leurs hauts lieux, ils ont excité sa jalousie par leurs idoles.
59 God heard and lightly regarded [them], and greatly despised Israel.
Dieu entendit et s'indigna, il prit Israël en grande aversion.
60 And he rejected the tabernacle of Selom, his tent where he dwelt among men.
Il dédaigna la demeure de Silo, la tente où il habitait parmi les hommes.
61 And he gave their strength into captivity, and their beauty into the enemy's hand.
Il livra sa force à la captivité, et sa majesté aux mains de l'ennemi.
62 And he gave his people to the sword; and disdained his inheritance.
Il abandonna son peuple au glaive, et il s'indigna contre son héritage.
63 Fire devoured their young men; and their virgins mourned not.
Le feu dévora ses jeunes hommes, et ses vierges n'entendirent point le chant nuptial.
64 Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows shall not be wept for.
Ses prêtres tombèrent par l'épée, et ses veuves ne se lamentèrent point.
65 So the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, [and] as a mighty man who has been heated with wine.
Le Seigneur se réveilla, comme un homme endormi, pareil au guerrier subjugué par le vin.
66 And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he brought on them a perpetual reproach.
Il frappa ses ennemis par derrière, il leur infligea une honte éternelle.
67 And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim;
Mais il prit en aversion la tente de Joseph, et il répudia la tribu d'Ephraïm.
68 but chose the tribe of Juda, the mount Sion which he loved.
Il choisit la tribu de Juda, la montagne de Sion qu'il aimait.
69 And he built his sanctuary as [the place] of unicorns; he founded it for ever on the earth.
Et il bâtit son sanctuaire comme les hauteurs du ciel, comme la terre qu'il a fondée pour toujours.
70 He chose David also his servant, and took him up from the flocks of sheep.
Il choisit David, son serviteur, et le tira des bergeries;
71 He took him from following the ewes great with young, to be the shepherd of Jacob his servant, and Israel his inheritance.
Il le prit derrière les brebis mères, pour paître Jacob, son peuple, et Israël, son héritage.
72 So he tended them in the innocency of his heart; and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.
Et David les guida dans la droiture de son cœur, et il les conduisit d'une main habile.
