< Proverbs 10 >

1 A wise son makes [his] father glad: but a foolish son is a grief to his mother.
Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son causeth a father to rejoice, And a foolish son [is] an affliction to his mother.
2 Treasures shall not profit the lawless: but righteousness shall deliver from death.
Treasures of wickedness profit not, And righteousness delivereth from death.
3 The Lord will not famish a righteous soul: but he will overthrow the life of the ungodly.
Jehovah causeth not the soul of the righteous to hunger, And the desire of the wicked He thrusteth away.
4 Poverty brings a man low: but the hands of the vigorous make rich. A son who is instructed shall be wise, and shall use the fool for a servant.
Poor [is] he who is working — a slothful hand, And the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
5 A wise son is saved from heat: but a lawless son is blighted of the winds in harvest.
Whoso is gathering in summer [is] a wise son, Whoso is sleeping in harvest [is] a son causing shame.
6 The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the just: but untimely grief shall cover the mouth of the ungodly.
Blessings [are] for the head of the righteous, And the mouth of the wicked cover doth violence.
7 The memory of the just is praised; but the name of the ungodly [man] is extinguished.
The remembrance of the righteous [is] for a blessing, And the name of the wicked doth rot.
8 A wise man in heart will receive commandments; but he that is unguarded in his lips shall be overthrown in his perverseness.
The wise in heart accepteth commands, And a talkative fool kicketh.
9 He that walks simply, walks confidently; but he that perverts his ways shall be known.
Whoso is walking in integrity walketh confidently, And whoso is perverting his ways is known.
10 He that winks with his eyes deceitfully, procures griefs for men; but he that reproves boldly is a peacemaker.
Whoso is winking the eye giveth grief, And a talkative fool kicketh.
11 [There is] a fountain of life in the hand of a righteous man; but destruction shall cover the mouth of the ungodly.
A fountain of life [is] the mouth of the righteous, And the mouth of the wicked cover doth violence.
12 Hatred stirs up strife; but affection covers all that do not love strife.
Hatred awaketh contentions, And over all transgressions love covereth.
13 He that brings forth wisdom from his lips smites the fool with a rod.
In the lips of the intelligent is wisdom found, And a rod [is] for the back of him who is lacking understanding.
14 The wise will hide discretion; but the mouth of the hasty draws near to ruin.
The wise lay up knowledge, and the mouth of a fool [is] near ruin.
15 The wealth of rich men is a strong city; but poverty is the ruin of the ungodly.
The wealth of the rich [is] his strong city, The ruin of the poor [is] their poverty.
16 The works of the righteous produce life; but the fruits of the ungodly [produce] sins.
The wage of the righteous [is] for life, The increase of the wicked for sin.
17 Instruction keeps the right ways of life; but instruction unchastened goes astray.
A traveller to life [is] he who is keeping instruction, And whoso is forsaking rebuke is erring.
18 Righteous lips cover enmity; but they that utter railings are most foolish.
Whoso is covering hatred with lying lips, And whoso is bringing out an evil report is a fool.
19 By a multitude of words thou shalt not escape sin; but if thou refrain thy lips thou wilt be prudent.
In the abundance of words transgression ceaseth not, And whoso is restraining his lips [is] wise.
20 The tongue of the just is tried silver; but the heart of the ungodly shall fail.
The tongue of the righteous [is] chosen silver, The heart of the wicked — as a little thing.
21 The lips of the righteous know sublime [truths]: but the foolish die in want.
The lips of the righteous delight many, And fools for lack of heart die.
22 The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the righteous; it enriches [him], and grief of heart shall not be added to [it].
The blessing of Jehovah — it maketh rich, And He addeth no grief with it.
23 A fool does mischief in sport; but wisdom brings forth prudence for a man.
To execute inventions [is] as play to a fool, And wisdom to a man of understanding.
24 The ungodly is engulphed in destruction; but the desire of the righteous is acceptable.
The feared thing of the wicked it meeteth him, And the desire of the righteous is given.
25 When the storm passes by, the ungodly vanishes away; but the righteous turns aside and escapes for ever.
As the passing by of a hurricane, So the wicked is not, And the righteous is a foundation age-during.
26 As a sour grape is hurtful to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, so iniquity hurts those that practise it.
As vinegar to the teeth, And as smoke to the eyes, So [is] the slothful to those sending him.
27 The fear of the Lord adds [length] of days: but the years of the ungodly shall be shortened.
The fear of Jehovah addeth days, And the years of the wicked are shortened.
28 Joy rests long with the righteous: but the hope of the ungodly shall perish.
The hope of the righteous [is] joyful, And the expectation of the wicked perisheth.
29 The fear of the Lord is a strong hold of the saints: but ruin [comes] to them that work wickedness.
The way of Jehovah [is] strength to the perfect, And ruin to workers of iniquity.
30 The righteous shall never fail: but the ungodly shall not dwell in the earth.
The righteous to the age is not moved, And the wicked inhabit not the earth.
31 The mouth of the righteous drops wisdom: but the tongue of the unjust shall perish.
The mouth of the righteous uttereth wisdom, And the tongue of frowardness is cut out.
32 The lips of just men drop grace: but the mouth of the ungodly is perverse.
The lips of the righteous know a pleasing thing, And the mouth of the wicked perverseness!
