Jeremias 4
1 If Israel will return to me, saith the Lord, he shall return: and if he will remove his abominations out of his mouth, and fear before me, and swear,
Si tu reviens, ô Israël, dit l’Éternel, reviens à moi; et si tu ôtes tes abominations de devant moi, tu ne seras plus errant,
2 The Lord lives, with truth, in judgment and righteousness, then shall nations bless by him, and by him they shall praise God in Jerusalem.
et tu jureras en vérité, en jugement et en justice: L’Éternel est vivant! Et les nations se béniront en lui, et en lui elles se glorifieront.
3 For thus saith the Lord to the men of Juda, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Break up fresh ground for yourselves, and sow not among thorns.
Car ainsi dit l’Éternel aux hommes de Juda et à Jérusalem: Défrichez pour vous un terrain neuf, et ne semez pas au milieu des épines.
4 Circumcise yourselves to your God, and circumcise your hardness of heart, ye men of Juda, and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my wrath go forth as fire, and burn, and there be none to quench it, because of the evil of your devices.
Circoncisez-vous pour l’Éternel, et ôtez le prépuce de vos cœurs, hommes de Juda et habitants de Jérusalem, de peur que ma fureur ne sorte comme un feu et ne brûle, sans qu’il y ait personne pour l’éteindre, à cause de l’iniquité de vos actions.
5 Declare ye in Juda, and let it be heard in Jerusalem: say ye, Sound the trumpet in the land; cry ye aloud: say ye, Gather yourselves together, and let us enter into the fortified cities.
Annoncez en Juda, et faites entendre dans Jérusalem, et dites, … et sonnez de la trompette dans le pays; criez à plein gosier et dites: Assemblez-vous, et entrons dans les villes fortes.
6 Gather up [your wares] and flee to Sion: hasten, stay not: for I will bring evils from the north, and great destruction.
Élevez l’étendard vers Sion, fuyez, et ne vous arrêtez pas; car je fais venir du nord le mal et une grande ruine.
7 The lion is gone up from his lair, he has roused [himself] to the destruction of the nations, and has gone forth out of his place, to make the land desolate; and the cities shall be destroyed, so as to be without inhabitant.
Le lion est monté de son fourré, et le destructeur des nations s’est mis en chemin; il est sorti de son lieu pour mettre ton pays en désolation: tes villes seront dévastées, de sorte qu’il n’y aura pas d’habitant.
8 For these things gird yourselves with sackclothes, and lament, and howl: for the anger of the Lord is not turned away from you.
C’est pourquoi ceignez-vous de sacs, lamentez-vous, et hurlez; car l’ardeur de la colère de l’Éternel ne s’est point détournée de nous.
9 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord, that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be amazed, and the prophets shall wonder.
Et il arrivera en ce jour-là, dit l’Éternel, que le cœur du roi défaillira et le cœur des princes, et que les sacrificateurs seront étonnés, et les prophètes stupéfaits.
10 And I said, O sovereign Lord, verily thou hast deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, There shall be peace; whereas behold, the sword has reached even to their soul.
Et je dis: Ah, Seigneur Éternel! certainement tu as bien trompé ce peuple et Jérusalem, en disant: Vous aurez la paix!… et l’épée est venue jusqu’à l’âme.
11 At that time they shall say to this people and to Jerusalem, [There is] a spirit of error in the wilderness: the way of the daughter of my people is not to purity, nor to holiness.
En ce temps-là, il sera dit à ce peuple et à Jérusalem: Un vent sec [vient] des hauteurs du désert, dans le chemin de la fille de mon peuple, non pour vanner, ni pour purifier.
12 [But] a spirit of full vengeance shall come upon me; and now I declare my judgments against them.
Un vent plus véhément que celui-là viendra de par moi; maintenant, moi aussi je prononcerai [mes] jugements sur eux.
13 Behold, he shall come up as a cloud, and his chariots as a tempest: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are in misery.
Voici, il monte comme des nuées, et ses chars sont comme un tourbillon; ses chevaux, plus rapides que les aigles. Malheur à nous! car nous sommes détruits.
14 Cleanse thine heart from wickedness, O Jerusalem, that thou mayest be saved: how long will thy grievous thoughts be within thee?
Lave ton cœur de l’iniquité, Jérusalem, afin que tu sois sauvée! Jusques à quand tes vaines pensées demeureront-elles au-dedans de toi?
15 For a voice of one publishing from Dan shall come, and trouble out of mount Ephraim shall be heard of.
Car une voix annonce de Dan, et, de la montagne d’Éphraïm, publie l’affliction.
16 Remind ye the nations; behold, they are come: proclaim [it] in Jerusalem, that bands are approaching from a land afar off, and have uttered their voice against the cities of Juda.
Faites savoir aux nations; voici, faites entendre à Jérusalem: Des assiégeants viennent d’un pays lointain et font retentir leur voix contre les villes de Juda.
17 As keepers of a field, they have surrounded her; because thou, saith the Lord, has neglected me.
Ils sont tout autour d’elle comme ceux qui gardent un champ; car elle s’est rebellée contre moi, dit l’Éternel.
18 Thy ways and thy devices have brought these things upon thee; this is thy wickedness, for [it is] bitter, for it has reached to thy heart.
Ta voie et tes actions ont amené sur toi ces choses, c’est là ton iniquité; oui, c’est [une chose] amère; oui, elle pénètre jusqu’à ton cœur.
19 I am pained in my bowels, my bowels, and the sensitive powers of my heart; my soul is in great commotion, my heart is torn: I will not be silent, for my soul has heard the sound of a trumpet, the cry of war, and of distress: it calls on destruction;
Mes entrailles! mes entrailles! je suis dans la douleur! Les parois de mon cœur! Mon cœur bruit au-dedans de moi, je ne puis me taire; car, mon âme, tu entends le son de la trompette, la clameur de la guerre!
20 for all the land is distressed: suddenly [my] tabernacle is distressed, my curtains have been rent asunder.
Ruine sur ruine se fait entendre, car tout le pays est dévasté: soudain mes tentes sont dévastées, en un moment, mes courtines.
21 How long shall I see fugitives, and hear the sound of the trumpet?
Jusques à quand verrai-je l’étendard, entendrai-je la voix de la trompette?
22 For the princes of my people have not known me, they are foolish and unwise children: they are wise to do evil, but [how] to do good they have not known.
Car mon peuple est fou, ils ne m’ont pas connu; ce sont des fils insensés, ils n’ont pas d’intelligence; ils sont sages pour faire le mal, mais ils ne savent pas faire le bien.
23 I looked upon the earth, and, behold, [it was] not; and to the sky, an there was no light in it.
J’ai regardé la terre, et voici, elle était désolation et vide, et vers les cieux, et leur lumière n’était pas.
24 I beheld the mountains, and they trembled, and [I saw] all the hills in commotion.
J’ai regardé les montagnes, et voici, elles se remuaient, et toutes les collines branlaient.
25 I looked, and behold, there was no man, and all the birds of the sky were scared.
J’ai regardé, et voici, il n’y avait pas d’homme, et tous les oiseaux des cieux avaient fui.
26 I saw, and, behold, Carmel was desert, and all the cities were burnt with fire at the presence of the Lord, and at the presence of his fierce anger they were utterly destroyed.
J’ai regardé, et voici, le Carmel était un désert, et toutes ses villes étaient renversées devant l’Éternel, devant l’ardeur de sa colère.
27 Thus saith the Lord, The whole land shall be desolate; but I will not make a full end.
Car ainsi dit l’Éternel: Tout le pays sera une désolation, mais je ne le détruirai pas entièrement.
28 For these things let the earth mourn, and let the sky be dark above: for I have spoken, and I will not repent; I have purposed, and I will not turn back from it.
À cause de cela, la terre mènera deuil, et, au-dessus, les cieux seront noirs, parce que je l’ai dit, je l’ai pensé, et je ne m’en repentirai point et je n’en reviendrai point.
29 The whole land has recoiled from the noise of the horseman and the bent bow; they have gone into the caves, and have hidden themselves in the groves, and have gone up upon the rocks: every city was abandoned, no man dwelt in them.
Devant le bruit des cavaliers et des tireurs d’arc toute ville fuit: ils entrent dans les fourrés et montent sur les rochers; toute ville est abandonnée, et aucun homme n’y habite.
30 And what wilt thou do? Though thou clothe thyself with scarlet, and adorn thyself with golden ornaments; though thou adorn thine eyes with stibium, thy beauty [will be] in vain: thy lovers have rejected thee, they seek thy life.
Et toi, dévastée, que feras-tu? Tu as beau te revêtir d’écarlate, te parer d’ornements d’or, te déchirer les yeux avec du fard, tu te fais belle en vain: les amants te méprisent, ils cherchent ta vie.
31 For I have heard thy groaning as the voice of a woman in travail, as of her that brings forth her first child; the voice of the daughter of Zion shall fail through weakness, and she shall lose the strength of her hands, [saying], Woe is me! for my soul faints because of the slain.
Car j’ai entendu une voix comme celle d’une femme en travail, une angoisse comme d’une femme enfantant son premier-né, la voix de la fille de Sion; elle soupire, elle étend ses mains: Malheur à moi! car mon âme a défailli à cause des meurtriers!
