< Jeremiah 2 >

1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
Pea naʻe toe hoko ʻae folofola ʻa Sihova kiate au, ʻo pehē,
2 Go and say in the ears of Jerusalem, The Lord says, I still keep the memory of your kind heart when you were young, and your love when you became my bride; how you went after me in the waste of sand, in an unplanted land.
“ʻAlu ʻo kalanga ki he telinga ʻo Selūsalema, ʻo pehē, ‘ʻOku pehē mai ʻe Sihova; “ʻOku ou manatuʻi koe, ko e angalelei naʻe fai kiate koe ʻi hoʻo kei siʻi, mo e ʻofa naʻe fakahā ʻi hoʻo fakanofo, ʻi hoʻo muimui kiate au ʻi he toafa, ʻi he fonua naʻe ʻikai tūtuuʻi.
3 Israel was holy to the Lord, the first-fruits of his increase: all who made attacks on him were judged as wrongdoers, evil came on them, says the Lord.
Naʻe fakatapui ʻa ʻIsileli kia Sihova, ko e ʻuluaki fua ʻo hono tupu: ʻe halaia ʻakinautolu kotoa pē ʻoku fakaʻauha ia;’” ʻoku pehē ʻe Sihova, “ʻE hoko ʻae kovi kiate kinautolu.”
4 Give ear to the words of the Lord, O sons of Jacob and all the families of Israel:
‌ʻE fale ʻo Sēkope, pea mo e faʻahinga kotoa pē ʻoe fale ʻo ʻIsileli, mou fanongo ki he folofola ʻa Sihova.
5 These are the words of the Lord: What evil have your fathers seen in me that they have gone far from me, and, walking after what is false, have become false?
ʻOku pehē ʻe Sihova, “Ko e hā ʻae kovi kuo ʻiloʻi ʻe hoʻomou ngaahi tamai ʻiate au, koeʻuhi kuo nau liʻaki au, pea muimui ki he meʻa noa pe, pea kuo nau hoko ʻo vale?
6 And they never said, Where is the Lord, who took us up out of the land of Egypt; who was our guide through the waste of sand, through an unplanted land full of deep holes, through a dry land of deep shade, which no one went through and where no man was living?
Pea naʻe ʻikai te nau pehē, ‘Ko e fē ʻa Sihova, ʻaia naʻa ne ʻomi ʻakimautolu mei he fonua ko ʻIsipite, ʻaia naʻa ne tataki ʻakimautolu ʻi he toafa; ʻi he fonua lala pea luoluo, ʻi he fonua mōmoa, mo e malumalu ʻoe mate, ʻi he fonua kuo ʻikai fononga ki ai ha tangata, pea ʻoku ʻikai nofo ai ha tangata?’
7 And I took you into a fertile land, where you were living on its fruit and its wealth; but when you came in, you made my land unclean, and made my heritage a disgusting thing.
Pea naʻaku ʻomi ʻakimoutolu ki he fonua mahu, ke kai hono fua, mo hono lelei ʻo ia; ka ʻi hoʻomou hū ki ai, kuo mou fakakoviʻi hoku fonua, pea ngaohi hoku tofiʻa ko e meʻa fakalielia.
8 The priests did not say, Where is the Lord? and those who were expert in the law had no knowledge of me: and the rulers did evil against me, and the prophets became prophets of the Baal, going after things without value.
Naʻe ʻikai pehē ʻe he kau taulaʻeiki, ‘Ko e fē ʻa Sihova?’ Pea naʻe ʻikai ʻiloʻi au ʻekinautolu naʻe maheni ai ʻi he fono: pea naʻe angatuʻu kiate au ʻae kau tauhi foki, pea naʻe kikite ʻae kau palōfita ʻi he hingoa ʻo Peali, pea nau muimui ki he ngaahi meʻa taʻeʻaonga.”
9 For this reason, I will again put forward my cause against you, says the Lord, even against you and against your children's children.
Ko ia ʻoku pehē mai ʻe Sihova, “Te u toe lea kiate kimoutolu, pea te u kole ki hoʻomou fānau, pea mo e fānau ʻa hoʻomou fānau.
10 For go over to the sea-lands of Kittim and see; send to Kedar and give deep thought to it; and see if there has ever been such a thing.
Koeʻuhi, ke mou ʻalu ki he ngaahi motu ʻo Kitimi, ʻo mamata; pea fekau ki Keta, pea fakakaukau lahi, pea vakai, pe ʻoku ai ha meʻa pehē.
11 Has any nation ever made a change in their gods, though they are no gods? but my people have given up their glory in exchange for what is of no profit.
‌ʻOku ai ha kakai kuo fetongi honau ngaahi ʻotua, ʻaia naʻe ʻikai ko e ʻotua? Ka kuo fetongi ʻa hoku kakai honau nāunau ki he meʻa taʻeʻaonga.”
12 Be full of wonder, O heavens, at this; be overcome with fear, be completely waste, says the Lord.
‌ʻOku pehē mai ʻe Sihova, “ʻE ngaahi langi mou ofo ki he meʻa ni, pea mou manavahē fakailifia; pea tetetete lahi ʻaupito,
13 For my people have done two evils; they have given up me, the fountain of living waters, and have made for themselves water-holes, cut out from the rock, broken water-holes, of no use for storing water.
“He kuo fai ʻe hoku kakai ʻae meʻa kovi ʻe ua: kuo nau liʻaki au ko e matavai moʻui, pea kuo nau tā kiate kinautolu ʻae ngaahi ʻaiʻanga vai, ko e ngaahi ʻaiʻanga vai mafōfoa, ʻaia ʻoku ʻikai faʻa maʻu ai ha vai.
14 Is Israel a servant? has he been a house-servant from birth? why has he been made waste?
“Ko e tamaioʻeiki ʻa ʻIsileli? Pe ko e hako ia ʻoe tamaioʻeiki? Ka ko e hā kuo fakamālohi ai ia?
15 The young lions have made an outcry against him with a loud voice: they have made his land waste; his towns are burned up, with no one living in them.
Naʻe ngungulu kiate ia ʻae fanga laione mui, kuo nau tangi ʻaki ʻae leʻo lahi, kuo nau fakalala ʻae fonua: kuo tutu hono ngaahi kolo pea ʻoku ʻikai ha kakai.
16 Even the children of Noph and Tahpanhes have put shame on you.
Pea kuo fakavolu foki ho tumuʻaki, ʻe he fānau ʻo Nofi mo Tapanesi.
17 Has not this come on you because you have given up the Lord your God, who was your guide by the way?
“ʻIkai kuo hoko ʻae meʻa ni kiate koe ʻiate koe pe, ʻi hoʻo liʻaki ʻa Sihova ko ho ʻOtua, ʻi heʻene tataki koe ʻi he hala?
18 And now, what have you to do on the way to Egypt, to get your drink from the waters of the Nile? or what have you to do on the way to Assyria, to get your drink from the waters of the River?
Pea ko eni, ko e hā ʻaʻau te ke ʻalu ai ʻi he hala ki ʻIsipite, ke inu ʻi he ngaahi vai ʻo Sihoa? Pea ko e hā te ke ʻalu ai koe ʻi he hala ki ʻAsilia, ke inu ʻi he vai ʻoe vaitafe?
19 The evil you yourselves have done will be your punishment, your errors will be your judge: be certain then, and see that it is an evil and a bitter thing to give up the Lord your God, and no longer to be moved by fear of me, says the Lord, the Lord of armies.
“ʻE tautea koe ʻe hoʻo angahala ʻaʻau, pea ʻe valokiʻi koe ʻe hoʻo fakaholomui: ko ia ke ke ʻilo mo vakai, ko e meʻa kovi mo fakamamahi, ʻa hoʻo liʻaki ʻa Sihova ko ho ʻOtua, pea ʻoku ʻikai te ke manavahē kiate au,” ʻoku pehē ʻe he ʻEiki ko Sihova ʻoe ngaahi kautau.
20 For in the past, your yoke was broken by your hands and your cords parted; and you said, I will not be your servant; for on every high hill and under every branching tree, your behaviour was like that of a loose woman
“He talu mei muʻa kuo u maumauʻi hoʻo haʻamonga, pea motuhi ho ngaahi haʻi; pea naʻa ke pehē, ‘ʻE ʻikai te u fai kovi;’ ka kuo ke ʻeveʻeva ʻi he ngaahi moʻunga māʻolunga kotoa pē, pea ʻi he lolo ʻakau mata kotoa pē ʻo fai angahala.
21 But when you were planted by me, you were a noble vine, in every way a true seed: how then have you been changed into the branching plant of a strange vine?
Ka naʻaku tō koe, ko e vaine lelei, ko e tenga lelei ʻaupito: pea ʻoku fēfē ai haʻo liliu ko e ʻakau kovi, ko e vaine kehe kiate au?”
22 For even if you are washed with soda and take much soap, still your evil-doing is marked before me, says the Lord God.
He ʻoku pehē mai ʻe he ʻEiki ko Sihova, “Kapau te ke fufulu koe ʻaki ʻae naita, pea toʻo kiate koe ʻae koa lahi, ka ʻoku kei ʻilonga ʻa hoʻo hia ʻi hoku ʻao.
23 How are you able to say, I am not unclean, I have not gone after the Baals? see your way in the valley, be clear about what you have done: you are a quick-footed camel twisting her way in and out;
“ʻE fēfē koā ʻa hoʻo pehē, ‘ʻOku ʻikai te u ʻuli, ʻoku ʻikai te u muimui kia Peali’? Vakai ki hoʻo ʻulungāanga ʻi he teleʻa, ke ke ʻilo ʻaia kuo ke fai: ko e kāmeli veʻe vave koe, ʻoku feʻaluʻaki ʻi hono ngaahi hala;
24 An untrained ass, used to the waste land, breathing up the wind in her desire; at her time, who is able to send her away? all those who are looking for her will have no need to make themselves tired; in her month they will get her.
Ko e ʻasi hehengi ʻoku maheni ai mo e toafa, ʻaia ʻoku ne folohifo ʻae matangi ʻi heʻene holi; pea ʻi heʻene pehē ko hai ʻoku faʻa fakafoki ia? ʻE ʻikai kumi fakafiuʻi ia ʻe ha taha; ka te nau ʻilo ia ʻi hono māhina.
25 Do not let your foot be without shoes, or your throat dry from need of water: but you said, There is no hope: no, for I have been a lover of strange gods, and after them I will go.
“Taʻofi ho vaʻe mei he taʻetopuvaʻe, pea mo ho kia mei he fieinu: ka naʻa ke pehē, ‘ʻOku ʻikai ha ʻamanaki:’ ʻoku ʻikai; he kuo u ʻofa ki he kau muli, pea te u muimui pe kiate kinautolu.’
26 As the thief is shamed when he is taken, so is Israel shamed; they, their kings and their rulers, their priests and their prophets;
Hangē ʻoku mā ʻae kaihaʻa ʻi hono ʻiloʻi ia, ʻoku pehē ʻae mā ʻae fale ʻo ʻIsileli; ko kinautolu, mo honau ngaahi tuʻi, mo honau houʻeiki, mo honau kau taulaʻeiki, mo honau kau palōfita.
27 Who say to a tree, You are my father; and to a stone, You have given me life: for their backs have been turned to me, not their faces: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Up! and be our saviour.
Ko kinautolu ʻoku pehē ki he ʻakau, ‘Ko ʻeku tamai koe;’ pea ki he maka, ‘Naʻa ke fāʻeleʻi au:’ he kuo nau fulituʻa kiate au, pea ʻoku ʻikai hanga mai honau mata: ka ʻi he ʻaho ʻo ʻenau mamahi te nau lea, ʻo pehē mai, ‘Tuʻu hake, ʻo fakamoʻui ʻakimoutolu.’
28 But where are the gods you have made for yourselves? let them come, if they are able to give you salvation in the time of your trouble: for the number of your gods is as the number of your towns, O Judah.
“Kā ko e fē ho ngaahi ʻotua kuo ke ngaohi moʻou? Ke tuʻu hake ʻakinautolu, kapau te nau faʻa fakamoʻui koe ʻi he ʻaho ʻoe mamahi: he ʻoku hangē ko hono lahi ʻo hoʻo ngaahi kolo, ʻE Siuta, ʻoku pehē hono tokolahi ʻo ho ngaahi ʻotua.
29 Why will you put forward your cause against me? You have all done evil against me, says the Lord.
“Ko e hā te mou tukuakiʻi ai au? ʻOku pehē ʻe Sihova, “Kuo angatuʻu kiate au ʻakimoutolu kotoa pē.”
30 I gave your children blows to no purpose; they got no good from training: your sword has been the destruction of your prophets, like a death-giving lion.
“Kuo taʻeʻaonga ʻeku taaʻi hoʻomou fānau; he ʻoku ʻikai te nau poto ai: kuo fakaʻauha homou kau palōfita, ʻaki hoʻomou heletā ʻamoutolu, ʻo hangē ko e laione fakaʻauha.
31 O generation, see the word of the Lord. Have I been a waste land to Israel? or a land of dark night? why do my people say, We have got loose, we will not come to you again?
‌ʻAe toʻutangata, mou tokanga ki he folofola ʻa Sihova. He naʻaku hoko ko e toafa ki ʻIsileli? Pe ko e fonua fakapoʻuli? Pea ko e hā ʻoku pehē ai ʻa hoku kakai, ‘Ko e houʻeiki ʻakimautolu; pea ʻe ʻikai te mau toe haʻu kiate koe?’
32 Is it possible for a virgin to put out of her memory her ornaments, or a bride her robes? but my people have put me out of their memories for unnumbered days.
“ʻE faʻa fakangaloʻi ʻe he tāupoʻou ʻa ʻene teunga, pe ko e taʻahine taʻane ʻa ʻene teuteu? Kā kuo fakangalongaloʻi au ʻe hoku kakai ʻi he ngaahi ʻaho taʻefaʻalaua.
33 With what care are your ways ordered when you are looking for love! so ... your ways.
Ko e hā ʻoku ke teuteu ai ho hala ke kumi ʻae ʻofa? Ko ia kuo ke akonaki ʻaki ho ngaahi hala ki he kau angahala foki.
34 And in the skirts of your robe may be seen the life-blood of those who have done no wrong: ...
Kuo ʻiloʻi foki ʻae toto ʻoe ngaahi laumālie taʻehalaia ʻi he kapa ʻo ho kofu: ʻoku ʻikai te u ʻilo ia ʻi he kumi lahi, ka ʻoku fakahāhā pe ia ʻiate kinautolu ni kotoa pē.
35 And still you said, I have done no wrong; truly, his wrath is turned away from me. See, I will take up the cause against you, because you say, I have done no wrong.
“Ka ʻoku ke pehē ʻe koe, ‘ʻOku ou taʻehalaia, pea ko ia ʻe fakaafe ʻa hono houhau ʻiate au.’ “Vakai, te u fakamaauʻi koe, koeʻuhi ʻoku ke pehē, ‘Naʻe ʻikai te ke fai kovi.’
36 Why do you go about so much for the purpose of changing your way? you will be shamed on account of Egypt, as you were shamed on account of Assyria.
Ko e hā ʻoku ke ʻalu fano ai pe ke fetongi ho hala? Te ke mā foki ki ʻIsipite, ʻo hangē ko hoʻo mā ki ʻAsilia.
37 Truly, you will go out from him with your hands on your head: for the Lord has given up those in whom you have put your faith, and they will be of no help to you.
‌ʻIo, te ke ʻalu meiate ia, kuo ʻai ho nima ki ho ʻulu: he kuo liʻaki ʻe Sihova ho ngaahi falalaʻanga, pea ʻe ʻikai te ke monūʻia ai.”
