Numbers 24

1 When Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go, as at the other times, to use divination, but he set his face toward the wilderness.

バラムはイスラエルを祝福することが主の心にかなうのを見たので、今度はいつものように行って魔術を求めることをせず、顔を荒野にむけ、

2 Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came on him.

目を上げて、イスラエルがそれぞれ部族にしたがって宿営しているのを見た。その時、神の霊が臨んだので、

3 He took up his parable, and said, “Balaam the son of Beor says, the man whose eyes are open says;

彼はこの託宣を述べた。「ベオルの子バラムの言葉、目を閉じた人の言葉、

4 he says, who hears the words of God, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down, and having his eyes open:

神の言葉を聞く者、全能者の幻を見る者、倒れ伏して、目の開かれた者の言葉。

5 How goodly are your tents, Jacob, and your dwellings, Israel!

ヤコブよ、あなたの天幕は麗しい、イスラエルよ、あなたのすまいは、麗しい。

6 As valleys they are spread out, as gardens by the riverside, as aloes which the LORD has planted, as cedar trees beside the waters.

それは遠くひろがる谷々のよう、川べの園のよう、主が植えられた沈香樹のよう、流れのほとりの香柏のようだ。

7 Water shall flow from his buckets. His seed shall be in many waters. His king shall be higher than Agag. His kingdom shall be exalted.

水は彼らのかめからあふれ、彼らの種は水の潤いに育つであろう。彼らの王はアガグよりも高くなり、彼らの国はあがめられるであろう。

8 God brings him out of Egypt. He has as it were the strength of the wild ox. He shall consume the nations his adversaries, shall break their bones in pieces, and pierce them with his arrows.

神は彼らをエジプトから導き出された、彼らは野牛の角のようだ。彼らは敵なる国々の民を滅ぼし、その骨を砕き、矢をもって突き通すであろう。

9 He couched, he lay down as a lion, as a lioness; who shall rouse him up? Everyone who blesses you is blessed. Everyone who curses you is cursed.”

彼らは雄じしのように身をかがめ、雌じしのように伏している。だれが彼らを起しえよう。あなたを祝福する者は祝福され、あなたをのろう者はのろわれるであろう」。

10 Balak’s anger burned against Balaam, and he struck his hands together. Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have altogether blessed them these three times.

そこでバラクはバラムにむかって怒りを発し、手を打ち鳴らした。そしてバラクはバラムに言った、「敵をのろうために招いたのに、あなたはかえって三度までも彼らを祝福した。

11 Therefore, flee to your place, now! I thought to promote you to great honor; but, behold, the LORD has kept you back from honor.”

それで今あなたは急いで自分のところへ帰ってください。わたしはあなたを大いに優遇しようと思った。しかし、主はその優遇をあなたに得させないようにされました」。

12 Balaam said to Balak, “Did not I also tell your messengers whom you sent to me, saying,

バラムはバラクに言った、「わたしはあなたがつかわされた使者たちに言ったではありませんか、

13 ‘If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the LORD’s word, to do either good or bad from my own mind. I will say what the LORD says’?

『たといバラクがその家に満ちるほどの金銀をわたしに与えようとも、主の言葉を越えて心のままに善も悪も行うことはできません。わたしは主の言われることを述べるだけです』。

14 Now, behold, I go to my people. Come, I will inform you what this people shall do to your people in the latter days.”

わたしは今わたしの民のところへ帰って行きます。それでわたしはこの民が後の日にあなたの民にどんなことをするかをお知らせしましょう」。

15 He took up his parable, and said, “Balaam the son of Beor says, the man whose eyes are open says;

そしてこの託宣を述べた。「ベオルの子バラムの言葉、目を閉じた人の言葉。

16 he says, who hears the words of God, knows the knowledge of the Most High, and who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down, and having his eyes open:

神の言葉を聞く者、いと高き者の知識をもつ者、全能者の幻を見、倒れ伏して、目の開かれた者の言葉。

17 I see him, but not now. I see him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob. A scepter will rise out of Israel, and shall strike through the corners of Moab, and crush all the sons of Sheth.

わたしは彼を見る、しかし今ではない。わたしは彼を望み見る、しかし近くではない。ヤコブから一つの星が出、イスラエルから一本のつえが起り、モアブのこめかみと、セツのすべての子らの脳天を撃つであろう。

18 Edom shall be a possession. Seir, his enemy, also shall be a possession, while Israel does valiantly.

敵のエドムは領地となり、セイルもまた領地となるであろう。そしてイスラエルは勝利を得るであろう。

19 Out of Jacob shall one have dominion, and shall destroy the remnant from the city.”

権を執る者がヤコブから出、生き残った者を町から断ち滅ぼすであろう」。

20 He looked at Amalek, and took up his parable, and said, “Amalek was the first of the nations, but his latter end shall come to destruction.”

バラムはまたアマレクを望み見て、この託宣を述べた。「アマレクは諸国民のうちの最初のもの、しかし、ついに滅び去るであろう」。

21 He looked at the Kenite, and took up his parable, and said, “Your dwelling place is strong. Your nest is set in the rock.

またケニびとを望み見てこの託宣を述べた。「お前のすみかは堅固だ、岩に、お前は巣をつくっている。

22 Nevertheless Kain shall be wasted, until Asshur carries you away captive.”

しかし、カインは滅ぼされるであろう。アシュルはいつまでお前を捕虜とするであろうか」。

23 He took up his parable, and said, “Alas, who shall live when God does this?

彼はまたこの託宣を述べた。「ああ、神が定められた以上、だれが生き延びることができよう。

24 But ships shall come from the coast of Kittim. They shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber. He also shall come to destruction.”

キッテムの海岸から舟がきて、アシュルを攻めなやまし、エベルを攻めなやますであろう。そして彼もまたついに滅び去るであろう」。

25 Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place; and Balak also went his way.

こうしてバラムは立ち上がって、自分のところへ帰っていった。バラクもまた立ち去った。
