Numbers 21
1 The Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the South, heard that Israel came by the way of Atharim. He fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.
時にネゲブに住んでいたカナンびとアラデの王は、イスラエルがアタリムの道をとおって来ると聞いて、イスラエルを攻撃し、そのうちの数人を捕虜にした。
2 Israel vowed a vow to the LORD, and said, “If you will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”
そこでイスラエルは主に誓いを立てて言った、「もし、あなたがこの民をわたしの手にわたしてくださるならば、わたしはその町々をことごとく滅ぼしましょう」。
3 The LORD listened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities. The name of the place was called Hormah.
主はイスラエルの言葉を聞きいれ、カナンびとをわたされたので、イスラエルはそのカナンびとと、その町々とをことごとく滅ぼした。それでその所の名はホルマと呼ばれた。
4 They traveled from Mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. The soul of the people was very discouraged because of the journey.
民はホル山から進み、紅海の道をとおって、エドムの地を回ろうとしたが、民はその道に堪えがたくなった。
5 The people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, there is no water, and our soul loathes this disgusting food!”
民は神とモーセとにむかい、つぶやいて言った、「あなたがたはなぜわたしたちをエジプトから導き上って、荒野で死なせようとするのですか。ここには食物もなく、水もありません。わたしたちはこの粗悪な食物はいやになりました」。
6 The LORD sent venomous snakes among the people, and they bit the people. Many people of Israel died.
そこで主は、火のへびを民のうちに送られた。へびは民をかんだので、イスラエルの民のうち、多くのものが死んだ。
7 The people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.” Moses prayed for the people.
民はモーセのもとに行って言った、「わたしたちは主にむかい、またあなたにむかい、つぶやいて罪を犯しました。どうぞへびをわたしたちから取り去られるように主に祈ってください」。モーセは民のために祈った。
8 The LORD said to Moses, “Make a venomous snake, and set it on a pole. It shall happen that everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”
そこで主はモーセに言われた、「火のへびを造って、それをさおの上に掛けなさい。すべてのかまれた者が仰いで、それを見るならば生きるであろう」。
9 Moses made a serpent of bronze, and set it on the pole. If a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked at the serpent of bronze, he lived.
モーセは青銅で一つのへびを造り、それをさおの上に掛けて置いた。すべてへびにかまれた者はその青銅のへびを仰いで見て生きた。
10 The children of Israel traveled, and encamped in Oboth.
イスラエルの人々は道を進んでオボテに宿営した。
11 They traveled from Oboth, and encamped at Iyeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrise.
またオボテから進んで東の方、モアブの前にある荒野において、イエアバリムに宿営した。
12 From there they traveled, and encamped in the valley of Zered.
またそこから進んでゼレデの谷に宿営し、
13 From there they traveled, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites; for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
さらにそこから進んでアルノン川のかなたに宿営した。アルノン川はアモリびとの境から延び広がる荒野を流れるもので、モアブとアモリびととの間にあって、モアブの境をなしていた。
14 Therefore it is said in The Book of the Wars of the LORD, “Vaheb in Suphah, the valleys of the Arnon,
それゆえに、「主の戦いの書」にこう言われている。「スパのワヘブ、アルノンの谷々、
15 the slope of the valleys that incline toward the dwelling of Ar, leans on the border of Moab.”
谷々の斜面、アルの町まで傾き、モアブの境に寄りかかる」。
16 From there they traveled to Beer; that is the well of which the LORD said to Moses, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”
彼らはそこからベエルへ進んで行った。これは主がモーセにむかって、「民を集めよ。わたしはかれらに水を与えるであろう」と言われた井戸である。
17 Then Israel sang this song: “Spring up, well! Sing to it,
その時イスラエルはこの歌をうたった。「井戸の水よ、わきあがれ、人々よ、この井戸のために歌え、
18 the well, which the princes dug, which the nobles of the people dug, with the scepter, and with their poles.” From the wilderness they traveled to Mattanah;
笏とつえとをもってつかさたちがこの井戸を掘り、民のおさたちがこれを掘った」。そして彼らは荒野からマッタナに進み、
19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;
マッタナからナハリエルに、ナハリエルからバモテに、
20 and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks down on the desert.
バモテからモアブの野にある谷に行き、荒野を見おろすピスガの頂に着いた。
21 Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,
ここでイスラエルはアモリびとの王シホンに使者をつかわして言わせた、
22 “Let me pass through your land. We will not turn away into field or vineyard. We will not drink of the water of the wells. We will go by the king’s highway, until we have passed your border.”
「わたしにあなたの国を通らせてください。わたしたちは畑にもぶどう畑にも、はいりません。また井戸の水も飲みません。わたしたちはあなたの領地を通り過ぎるまで、ただ王の大路を通ります」。
23 Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his border, but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz. He fought against Israel.
しかし、シホンはイスラエルに自分の領地を通ることを許さなかった。そしてシホンは民をことごとく集め、荒野に出て、イスラエルを攻めようとし、ヤハズにきてイスラエルと戦った。
24 Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was fortified.
イスラエルは、やいばで彼を撃ちやぶり、アルノンからヤボクまで彼の地を占領し、アンモンびとの境に及んだ。ヤゼルはアンモンびとの境だからである。
25 Israel took all these cities. Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages.
こうしてイスラエルはこれらの町々をことごとく取った。そしてイスラエルはアモリびとのすべての町々に住み、ヘシボンとそれに附属するすべての村々にいた。
26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even to the Arnon.
ヘシボンはアモリびとの王シホンの都であって、シホンはモアブの以前の王と戦って、彼の地をアルノンまで、ことごとくその手から奪い取ったのである。
27 Therefore those who speak in proverbs say, “Come to Heshbon. Let the city of Sihon be built and established;
それゆえに歌にうたわれている。「人々よ、ヘシボンにきたれ、シホンの町を築き建てよ。
28 for a fire has gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon. It has devoured Ar of Moab, The lords of the high places of the Arnon.
ヘシボンから火が燃え出し、シホンの都から炎が出て、モアブのアルを焼き尽し、アルノンの高地の君たちを滅ぼしたからだ。
29 Woe to you, Moab! You are undone, people of Chemosh! He has given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, to Sihon king of the Amorites.
モアブよ、お前はわざわいなるかな、ケモシの民よ、お前は滅ぼされるであろう。彼は、むすこらを逃げ去らせ、娘らをアモリびとの王シホンの捕虜とならせた。
30 We have shot at them. Heshbon has perished even to Dibon. We have laid waste even to Nophah, Which reaches to Medeba.”
彼らの子らは滅び去った、ヘシボンからデボンまで。われわれは荒した、火はついてメデバに及んだ」。
31 Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.
こうしてイスラエルはアモリびとの地に住んだが、
32 Moses sent to spy out Jazer. They took its villages, and drove out the Amorites who were there.
モーセはまた人をつかわしてヤゼルを探らせ、ついにその村々を取って、そこにいたアモリびとを追い出し、
33 They turned and went up by the way of Bashan. Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.
転じてバシャンの道に上って行ったが、バシャンの王オグは、その民をことごとく率い、エデレイで戦おうとして出迎えた。
34 The LORD said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have delivered him into your hand, with all his people, and his land. You shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”
主はモーセに言われた、「彼を恐れてはならない。わたしは彼とその民とその地とを、ことごとくあなたの手にわたす。あなたはヘシボンに住んでいたアモリびとの王シホンにしたように彼にもするであろう」。
35 So they struck him, with his sons and all his people, until there were no survivors; and they possessed his land.
そこで彼とその子とすべての民とを、ひとり残らず撃ち殺して、その地を占領した。
