Matthew 5
1 Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain. When he had sat down, his disciples came to him.
Jésus, voyant la foule, alla sur la montagne; et, quand il se fut assis, ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui.
2 He opened his mouth and taught them, saying,
Alors, ouvrant la bouche, il se mit à les enseigner, en disant:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Heureux les pauvres en esprit; car le royaume des cieux est à eux!
4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Heureux ceux qui pleurent; car ils seront consolés!
5 Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
Heureux les débonnaires; car ils hériteront la terre!
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Heureux ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice; car ils seront rassasiés!
7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Heureux les miséricordieux; car ils obtiendront miséricorde!
8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Heureux ceux qui ont le coeur pur; car ils verront Dieu!
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.
Heureux ceux qui procurent la paix; ils seront appelés fils de Dieu!
10 Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Heureux ceux qui sont persécutés pour la justice; car le royaume des cieux est à eux!
11 “Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Vous serez heureux, lorsqu'on vous outragera, qu'on vous persécutera, et qu'on dira faussement contre vous toute sorte de mal à cause de moi.
12 Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Réjouissez-vous et tressaillez de joie, parce que votre récompense sera grande dans les cieux; car c'est ainsi qu'on a persécuté les prophètes qui sont venus avant vous.
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.
Vous êtes le sel de la terre; mais, si le sel perd sa saveur, avec quoi la lui rendra-t-on? Il n'est plus bon qu'à être jeté dehors et foulé aux pieds par les hommes.
14 You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden.
Vous êtes la lumière du monde: une ville située sur une montagne ne peut être cachée,
15 Neither do you light a lamp and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house.
et on n'allume pas une lampe pour la mettre sous le boisseau; mais on la met sur un support, et elle éclaire tous ceux qui sont dans la maison.
16 Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Que votre lumière luise ainsi devant les hommes, afin qu'ils voient vos bonnes oeuvres, et qu'ils glorifient votre Père qui est dans les cieux.
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
Ne pensez pas que je sois venu abolir la loi ou les prophètes: je suis venu, non pour abolir, mais pour accomplir.
18 For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished.
En effet, je vous le dis en vérité, avant que le ciel et la terre aient passé, il ne passera de la loi ni un iota ni un trait de lettre, jusqu'à ce que tout soit accompli.
19 Therefore, whoever shall break one of these least commandments and teach others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Celui donc qui violera l'un de ces plus petits commandements, et qui enseignera aux hommes à les violer, sera appelé le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux; mais celui qui les observera et qui les enseignera, celui-là sera appelé grand dans le royaume des cieux!
20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
Car je vous dis que si votre justice ne surpasse pas celle des scribes et des pharisiens, vous n'entrerez point dans le royaume des cieux.
21 “You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, ‘You shall not murder;’ and ‘Whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’
Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit aux anciens: «Tu ne tueras point»; et: «Celui qui aura tué sera jugé par le tribunal»
22 But I tell you that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment. Whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!' will be in danger of the council. Whoever says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna (Geenna g1067).
Mais moi, je vous dis: Quiconque se met en colère contre son frère, sera jugé par le tribunal. Celui qui dira à son frère: Raca, sera jugé par le Sanhédrin; et celui qui lui dira: Fou, sera passible de la géhenne du feu. (Geenna g1067)
23 “If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you,
— Si donc tu apportes ton offrande à l'autel, et que là tu te souviennes que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi,
24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
laisse là ton offrande devant l'autel, et va premièrement te réconcilier avec ton frère; après cela, viens et présente ton offrande.
25 Agree with your adversary quickly while you are with him on the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.
Accorde-toi au plus tôt avec, ton adversaire, pendant que tu es en chemin avec lui, de peur qu'il ne te livre au juge, que le juge ne te livre au sergent, et que tu ne sois mis en prison.
26 Most certainly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there until you have paid the last penny.
En vérité, je te le dis, tu ne sortiras pas de là, que tu n'aies payé jusqu'à la dernière obole.
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery;’
Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit: «Tu ne commettras point d'adultère.»
28 but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Mais moi, je vous dis: Quiconque jette sur une femme un regard de convoitise, a déjà commis l'adultère avec elle dans son coeur.
29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna (Geenna g1067).
Si donc ton oeil droit te fait tomber dans le péché, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi; car il vaut mieux pour toi qu'un de tes membres périsse, que si tout ton corps était jeté dans la géhenne. (Geenna g1067)
30 If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna (Geenna g1067).
Si ta main droite te fait tomber dans le péché, coupe-la et jette-la loin de toi; car il vaut mieux pour toi qu'un de tes membres périsse, que si tout ton corps allait dans la géhenne. (Geenna g1067)
31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,’
Il a été dit: «Si quelqu'un répudie sa femme, qu'il lui donne une lettre de divorce.»
32 but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery.
Mais moi, je vous dis: Quiconque répudie sa femme, si ce n'est pour cause d'inconduite, l'expose à devenir adultère; et quiconque aura épousé une femme répudiée, commet un adultère.
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to the Lord your vows,’
Vous avez encore entendu qu'il a été dit aux anciens: «Tu ne te parjureras point; mais tu t'acquitteras envers le Seigneur de tes serments.»
34 but I tell you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;
Mais moi, je vous dis de ne point jurer du tout: ni par le ciel, car c'est le trône de Dieu;
35 nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
ni par la terre, car c'est son marchepied; ni par Jérusalem, car c'est la ville du grand Roi.
36 Neither shall you swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.
Ne jure pas non plus par ta tête, car tu ne peux rendre un seul de tes cheveux blanc ou noir.
37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.
Mais que votre parole soit: oui, oui; non, non. Ce qu'on dit de plus vient du Malin.
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’
Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit; «Oeil pour oeil, et dent pour dent.»
39 But I tell you, do not resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Mais moi, je vous dis de ne pas résister au méchant. Au contraire, si quelqu'un te frappe à la joue droite, présente-lui aussi l'autre.
40 If anyone sues you to take away your coat, let him have your cloak also.
Si quelqu'un veut plaider contre toi pour t'enlever ta tunique, laisse-lui encore le manteau;
41 Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
et si quelqu'un veut te contraindre de faire un mille avec lui, fais-en deux.
42 Give to him who asks you, and do not turn away him who desires to borrow from you.
Donne à celui qui te demande, et ne te détourne pas de celui qui veut emprunter de toi.
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit: «Tu aimeras ton prochain», et tu haïras ton ennemi.
44 But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,
Mais moi, je vous dis: Aimez vos ennemis, et priez pour ceux qui vous persécutent,
45 that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.
afin que vous soyez les fils de votre Père qui est dans les cieux; car il fait lever son soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons, et il fait pleuvoir sur les justes et sur les injustes.
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
Si vous n'aimez que ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense en aurez-vous? Les péagers n'en font-ils pas autant?
47 If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
Et si vous ne faites accueil qu'à vos frères, que faites-vous d'extraordinaire? Les Païens même n'en font-ils pas autant?
48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
Soyez donc parfaits, comme votre Père céleste est parfait.
