< James 2 >

1 My brothers, do not hold the faith of our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with partiality.
ⲁ̅ⲛⲁ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲣⲭⲁ ⲡⲓⲛⲁϩϯ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⳿ⲡⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲉⲛ⳪ Ⲓⲏ̅ⲥ̅ Ⲡⲭ̅ⲥ̅ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲛ ⲑⲏⲛⲟⲩ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲙⲉⲧⲣⲉϥϫⲟⲩϣⲧ ⳿ⲉϩⲟ.
2 For if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your synagogue, and a poor man in filthy clothing also comes in,
ⲃ̅ⲉϣⲱⲡ ⲅⲁⲣ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉϥ⳿ⲓ ⳿ⲉϧⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲥⲩⲛⲁⲅⲱⲅⲏ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲣⲱⲙⲓ ⲉⲣⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲟⲩ⳿ϣϭ ⲟⲩⲣ ⳿ⲛⲛⲟⲩⲃ ⲧⲟⲓ ⳿ⲉⲡⲉϥⲧⲏⲃ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩϩⲉⲃⲥⲱ ⲉⲥⲫⲟⲣⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉϥ⳿ⲓ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲉϧⲟⲩⲛ ϩⲱϥ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲟⲩϩⲏⲕⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩϩⲉⲃⲥⲱ ⲉⲥⲁⲑⲓⲱⲟⲩ.
3 and you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing and say, “Sit here in a good place;” and you tell the poor man, “Stand there,” or “Sit by my footstool”
ⲅ̅ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛϫⲟⲩϣⲧ ⳿ⲉⲫⲏⲉⲧⲉ ϯ ϩⲉⲃⲥⲱ ⲉⲧⲫⲟⲣⲓ ⲧⲟⲓ ϩⲓⲱⲧϥ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛϫⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲛⲑⲟⲕ ϩⲉⲙⲥⲓ ⲛⲁⲕ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲓⲙⲁ ⳿ⲛⲕⲁⲗⲱⲥ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛϫⲟⲥ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓϩⲏⲕⲓ ϩⲱϥ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲛⲑⲟⲕ ⲟϩⲓ ⳿ⲉⲣⲁⲧⲕ ϩⲁⲙⲛⲏ ⲓⲉ ϩⲉⲙⲥⲓ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲓⲙⲁ ϧⲁⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲫⲙⲁ ⳿ⲛⲭⲁ ⲛⲓϭⲁⲗⲁⲩϫ.
4 have not you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
ⲇ̅ⲙⲏ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛⲭⲁ ⲟⲩϣⲓⲃϯ ⳿ⲛ⳿ϩⲣⲏⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ⲑⲏⲛⲟⲩ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲁⲣⲉⲧⲉⲛⲉⲣⲣⲉϥϯϩⲁⲡ ⳿ⲛ⳿ϧⲣⲏⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ϩⲁⲛⲙⲉⲩⲓ ⲉⲩϩⲱⲟⲩ.
5 Listen, my beloved brothers. Did not God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?
ⲉ̅ⲥⲱⲧⲉⲙ ⲛⲁ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⲛⲁⲙⲉⲛⲣⲁϯ ⲙⲏ ⲫϯ ⲛⲁϥⲥⲱⲧⲡ ⳿ⲛⲛⲓϩⲏⲕⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲓⲕⲟⲥⲙⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛⲣⲁⲙⲁ⳿ⲟ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲓⲛⲁϩϯ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲛ⳿ⲕⲗⲏⲣⲟⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ϯ ⲙⲉⲧⲟⲩⲣⲟ ⲑⲏ ⲉⲧⲁϥⲱϣ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛⲛⲏⲉⲑⲛⲁⲙⲉⲛⲣⲓⲧϥ.
6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and personally drag you before the courts?
ⲋ̅⳿ⲛⲑⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲁⲣⲉⲧⲉⲛϣⲉϣ ⲡⲓϩⲏⲕⲓ ⲙⲏ ⲛⲓⲣⲁⲙⲁⲱⲟⲩ ⲁⲛ ⲉⲧⲟⲓ ⳿ⲛϫⲱⲣⲓ ⳿ⲉⲣⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲛⲑⲱⲟⲩ ⲉⲧⲥⲱⲕ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲉϩⲁⲛⲙⲁ⳿ⲛϯϩⲁⲡ.
7 Do not they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?
ⲍ̅ⲙⲏ ⳿ⲛⲑⲱⲟⲩ ⲁⲛ ⲉⲧϫⲉⲟⲩ⳿ⲁ ⳿ⲉⲡⲓⲣⲁⲛ ⲉⲑⲛⲁⲛⲉϥ ⲉⲧⲁⲩⲙⲟⲩϯ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⳿ⲉϫⲉⲛ ⲑⲏⲛⲟⲩ.
8 However, if you fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well.
ⲏ̅ⲓⲥϫⲉ ⲙⲉⲛ ⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛϫⲱⲕ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩⲣⲟ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ ⲛⲓ⳿ⲅⲣⲁⲫⲏ ϫⲉ ⲉⲕ⳿ⲉⲙⲉⲛⲣⲉ ⲡⲉⲕ⳿ϣⲫⲏⲣ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲕⲣⲏϯ ⲕⲁⲗⲱⲥ ⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲣⲁ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ.
9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.
ⲑ̅ⲓⲥϫⲉ ⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛϫⲟⲩϣⲧ ⳿ⲉϩⲟ ⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲉⲣϩⲱⲃ ⳿ⲉ⳿ⲫⲛⲟⲃⲓ ⲉⲣⲉ ⳿ⲫⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲥⲟϩⲓ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲉⲛ ϩⲱⲥ ⲡⲁⲣⲁⲃⲁⲧⲏⲥ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲓⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ.
10 For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
ⲓ̅ⲫⲏ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲉⲑⲛⲁ⳿ⲁⲣⲉϩ ⳿ⲉ⳿ⲫⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉϥϩⲉⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲁⲓ ⲁϥϣⲱⲡⲓ ⲉϥⲟⲓ ⳿ⲛⲉⲛⲟⲭⲟⲥ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲟⲩ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ.
11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
ⲓ̅ⲁ̅ⲫⲏ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲉⲧⲁϥϫⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲛⲛⲉⲕⲉⲣⲛⲱⲓⲕ ⳿ⲛⲑⲟϥ ⲟⲛ ⲁϥϫⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲛⲛⲉⲕϧⲱⲧⲉⲃ ⲓⲥϫⲉ ⳿ⲕⲟⲓ ⳿ⲛⲛⲱⲓⲕ ⲁⲛ ⳿ⲕϧⲱⲧⲉⲃ ⲇⲉ ⲁⲕϣⲱⲡⲓ ⲉⲕⲟⲓ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲣⲁⲃⲁⲧⲏⲥ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲓⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ.
12 So speak and so do as men who are to be judged by the law of freedom.
ⲓ̅ⲃ̅ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲓⲣⲏϯ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲁⲣⲓⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲓⲣⲏϯ ϩⲱⲥ ⲉⲩⲛⲁϯϩⲁⲡ ⳿ⲉⲣⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲫⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ϯⲙⲉⲧⲣⲉⲙϩⲉ.
13 For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
ⲓ̅ⲅ̅ⲡⲓϩⲁⲡ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲟⲩⲁⲑⲛⲁⲓ ⲡⲉ ⳿ⲙⲫⲏⲉⲧⲉ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉϥ⳿ⲓⲣⲓ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲛⲁⲓ ϣⲁⲣⲉ ⳿ⲫⲛⲁⲓ ⲅⲁⲣ ϣⲟⲩϣⲟⲩ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⳿ⲉϫⲉⲛ ⲡⲓϩⲁⲡ.
14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?
ⲓ̅ⲇ̅ⲟⲩ ⲡⲉ ⳿ⲡϩⲏⲟⲩ ⲛⲁ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⲉϣⲱⲡ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲟⲩⲁⲓ ϫⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛϯ ⲛⲁϩϯ ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲛ ⳿ⲛⲧⲁϥ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲛϩⲁⲛ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⲙⲏ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⳿ϣϫⲟⲙ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲓⲛⲁϩϯ ⲛⲁϩⲙⲉϥ ⲁϭⲛⲉ ⲛⲓ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩⲓ.
15 And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food,
ⲓ̅ⲉ̅ⲉϣⲱⲡ ⲇⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲟⲩⲥⲟⲛ ⲓⲉ ⲟⲩⲥⲱⲛⲓ ⲉⲩⲃⲏϣ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲉⲩϣⲁⲧ ⳿ⲛ⳿ⲧ⳿ϧⲣⲉ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲓ⳿ⲉϩⲟⲟⲩ.
16 and one of you tells them, “Go in peace. Be warmed and filled;” yet you did not give them the things the body needs, what good is it?
ⲓ̅ⲋ̅⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲟⲩⲁⲓ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲑⲏⲛⲟⲩ ϫⲟⲥ ⲛⲱⲟⲩ ϫⲉ ⲙⲁϣⲉ ⲛⲱⲧⲉⲛ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩϩⲓⲣⲏⲛⲏ ⳿ϧⲙⲟⲙ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲥⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛ⳿ϣⲧⲉⲙϯ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛ⳿ⲧ⳿ⲭⲣⲓⲁ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲓⲥⲱⲙⲁ ⲟⲩ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲓϩⲏⲟⲩ.
17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.
ⲓ̅ⲍ̅ⲡⲁⲓⲣⲏϯ ϩⲱϥ ⲡⲓⲛⲁϩϯ ⲉϣⲱⲡ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲛ ϩⲱⲃ ⳿ⲛϧⲏⲧϥ ⳿ϥⲙⲱⲟⲩⲧ ϧⲁⲣⲓ ϧⲁⲣⲟϥ.
18 Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
ⲓ̅ⲏ̅ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⳿ϥⲛⲁϫⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲁⲓ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲛⲑⲟⲕ ⲟⲩⲟⲛⲧⲁⲕ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩⲛⲁϩϯ ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲇⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛⲧⲏⲓ ⳿ⲛϩⲁⲛ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⲙⲁⲧⲁⲙⲟⲓ ⳿ⲉⲡⲉⲕⲛⲁϩϯ ⲭⲱⲣⲓⲥ ⲛⲓ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩⲓ ⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲛⲧⲁⲧⲁⲙⲟⲕ ⳿ⲉⲡⲁⲛⲁϩϯ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲛⲁ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ.
19 You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe—and shudder.
ⲓ̅ⲑ̅⳿ⲛⲑⲟⲕ ⳿ⲭⲛⲁϩϯ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲁⲓ ⲡⲉ ⲫϯ ⲕⲁⲗⲱⲥ ⲕⲣⲁ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲓⲕⲉⲇⲉⲙⲱⲛ ϩⲱⲟⲩ ⲥⲉⲛⲁϩϯ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲥⲉ⳿ⲥⲑⲉⲣⲧⲉⲣ.
20 But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?
ⲕ̅⳿ⲭⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲉ⳿ⲉⲙⲓ ⲱ ⳿ⲫⲣⲱⲙⲓ ⲉⲧϣⲟⲩⲓⲧ ϫⲉ ⲡⲓⲛⲁϩϯ ⲭⲱⲣⲓⲥ ⲛⲓ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩⲓ ⳿ϥⲙⲱⲟⲩⲧ.
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?
ⲕ̅ⲁ̅ⲁⲃⲣⲁⲁⲙ ⲡⲉⲛⲓⲱⲧ ⲙⲏ ⲛⲉⲧⲁⲩ⳿ⲑⲙⲁⲓⲟϥ ⲁⲛ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲛⲓ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩⲓ ⲉⲧⲁϥ⳿ⲉⲛ ⳿ Ⲓⲥⲁⲁⲕ ⲡⲉϥϣⲏⲣⲓ ϩⲓϫⲉⲛ ⲡⲓⲙⲁ⳿ⲛⲉⲣϣⲱⲟⲩϣⲓ.
22 You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected.
ⲕ̅ⲃ̅⳿ⲭⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲛⲁⲣⲉ ⲡⲓⲛⲁϩϯ ⲉⲣϩⲱⲃ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲛⲓ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩⲓ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ϧⲉⲛ ⲛⲓ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩⲓ ⲁ ⲡⲓⲛⲁϩϯ ϫⲱⲕ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ.
23 So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God.
ⲕ̅ⲅ̅ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲁⲥϫⲱⲕ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ϯ⳿ⲅⲣⲁⲫⲏ ϫⲉ ⲁϥⲛⲁϩϯ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲁⲃⲣⲁⲁⲙ ⳿ⲉⲫϯ ⲁⲩⲟⲡⲥ ⲛⲁϥ ⳿ⲉⲟⲩⲙⲉⲑⲙⲏⲓ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲁⲩⲙⲟⲩϯ ⳿ⲉⲣⲟϥ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲡ⳿ϣⲫⲏⲣ ⳿ⲙⲫϯ.
24 You see then that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.
ⲕ̅ⲇ̅ⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲁⲩⲛⲁ⳿ⲑⲙⲁⲓⲉ ⲡⲓⲣⲱⲙⲓ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲛⲓ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩⲓ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲛⲉ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲓⲛⲁϩϯ ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩⲁⲧϥ ⲁⲛ.
25 In the same way, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
ⲕ̅ⲉ̅ⲡⲁⲓⲣⲏϯ ⲟⲛ ⲣⲁⲁⲃ ϯⲡⲟⲣⲛⲏ ⲙⲏ ⲛⲉⲧⲁⲩ⳿ⲑⲙⲁⲓⲟⲥ ⲁⲛ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲛⲓ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩⲓ ⲉⲧⲁⲥϣⲉⲡ ⲛⲓϫⲏⲣ ⳿ⲉⲣⲟⲥ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲁⲥϯⲧⲟⲧⲟⲩ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲉⲛ ⲕⲉⲙⲱⲓⲧ.
26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
ⲕ̅ⲋ̅⳿ⲙ⳿ⲫⲣⲏϯ ⲅⲁⲣ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲥⲱⲙⲁ ⲭⲱⲣⲓⲥ ⲡⲓⲡ͞ⲛⲁ̅ ⳿ϥⲙⲱⲟⲩⲧ ⲡⲁⲓⲣⲏϯ ϩⲱϥ ⲡⲓⲛⲁϩϯ ⲭⲱⲣⲓⲥ ⲛⲓ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩⲓ ⳿ϥⲙⲱⲟⲩⲧ
