Numeri 12

1 Eens maakten Mirjam en Aäron Moses een verwijt over zijn koesjietische vrouw, die hij zich had genomen; want hij had een vrouw uit Koesj gehuwd.

And Mariam and Aaron spoke against Moses, because of the Ethiopian woman whom Moses took; for he had taken an Ethiopian woman.

2 Zij zeiden: Heeft Jahweh soms alleen tot Moses gesproken; heeft Hij ook niet tot ons gesproken? Jahweh hoorde het.

And they said, Has the Lord spoken to Moses only? has he not also spoken to us? and the Lord heard it.

3 En daar Moses een zeer deemoedig man was, meer dan iemand ter wereld,

And the man Moses was very meek beyond all the men that were upon the earth.

4 sprak Jahweh ogenblikkelijk tot Moses, Aäron en Mirjam: Gaat met uw drieën naar de openbaringstent. En zij gingen er met hun drieën heen.

And the Lord said immediately to Moses and Aaron and Mariam, Come forth all three of you to the tabernacle of witness.

5 Toen daalde Jahweh in de wolkkolom neer, en ging bij de ingang van de Tent staan. Hij riep Aäron en Mirjam, en toen beiden naar voren waren getreden,

And the three came forth to the tabernacle of witness; and the Lord descended in a pillar of a cloud, and stood at the door of the tabernacle of witness; and Aaron and Mariam were called; and both came forth.

6 sprak Jahweh: Hoort mijn woord! Zo er een profeet onder u is, Openbaar Ik Mij aan hem in een visioen, En spreek tot hem in een droom;

And he said to them, Hear my words: If there should be of you a prophet to the Lord, I will be made known to him in a vision, and in sleep will I speak to him.

7 Zo niet met Moses, mijn dienaar, Die getrouw is bevonden in heel mijn huis;

My servant Moses [is] not so; he is faithful in all my house.

8 Tot hem spreek Ik van mond tot mond, Niet in visioenen en raadsels: Hij aanschouwt Jahweh in eigen persoon! Waarom vreest ge dan niet, Mijn dienaar Moses verwijten te doen?

I will speak to him mouth to mouth apparently, and not in dark speeches; and he has seen the glory of the Lord; and why were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?

9 Ziedend van gramschap ging Jahweh heen.

And the great anger of the Lord [was] upon them, and he departed.

10 En toen de wolk boven de openbaringstent was opgetrokken, was Mirjam melaats, en wit als sneeuw en toen Aäron zich tot Mirjam wendde: daar stond een melaatse.

And the cloud departed from the tabernacle; and, behold, Mariam was leprous, [white] as snow; and Aaron looked upon Mariam, and, behold, she [was] leprous.

11 Nu sprak Aäron tot Moses: Ach, heer; wil toch op ons de zonde niet wreken, die wij in onze dwaasheid hebben begaan.

And Aaron said to Moses, I beseech you, my lord, do not lay sin upon us, for we were ignorant wherein we sinned.

12 Laat haar niet op een doodgeborene lijken, wiens vlees voor de helft al verteerd is, als hij uit de moederschoot komt.

Let her not be as it were like death, as an abortion coming out of his mother's womb, when [the disease] devours the half of the flesh.

13 En Moses smeekte Jahweh: Ach neen; wil haar genezen!

And Moses cried to the Lord, saying, O God, I beseech you, heal her.

14 Jahweh gaf Moses ten antwoord: Als haar vader haar in het gelaat had gespuwd, zou ze zich dan niet zeven dagen lang hebben geschaamd? Zo zal ze zeven dagen lang buiten de legerplaats worden gesloten; daarna mag ze weer worden toegelaten.

And the Lord said to Moses, If her father had only spit in her face, would she not be ashamed seven days? let her be set apart seven days without the camp, and afterwards she shall come in.

15 Mirjam werd dus zeven dagen lang buiten de legerplaats gesloten; en het volk trok niet op, voor Mirjam weer was toegelaten.

And Mariam was separated without the camp seven days; and the people moved not forward till Mariam was cleansed.

16 Daarna brak het volk op van Chaserot, en legerde zich in de woestijn Paran.

And afterwards the people set forth from Aseroth, and encamped in the wilderness of Pharan.
