Ezra 5

1 Maar toen de profeten Aggeus en Zakarias, de zoon van Iddo, onder de Joden, die in Juda en Jerusalem woonden, in de naam van Israëls God profeteerden,

Then Haggai a Prophet and Zechariah the sonne of Iddo a Prophet prophecied vnto the Iewes that were in Iudah, and Ierusalem, in the name of the God of Israel, euen vnto them.

2 hervatten Zorobabel, de zoon van Salatiël, en Jesjóea, de zoon van Josadak, de bouw van de tempel te Jerusalem, en Gods profeten ondersteunden hen daarbij.

Then Zerubbabel the sonne of Shealtiel, and Ieshua the sonne of Iozadak arose, and began to builde the house of God at Ierusalem, and with them were the Prophetes of God, which helped them.

3 Maar aanstonds kwamen Tattenai, de stadhouder van het gebied aan de overzijde van de Rivier, en Sjetar-Bozenai en hun ambtgenoten naar hen toe, en zeiden tot hen: Wie heeft u verlof gegeven, dit huis te bouwen en zijn muren te herstellen?

At the same time came to them Tatnai, which was captaine beyonde the Riuer, and Shether-boznai and their companions, and sayd thus vnto them, Who hath giuen you commandement to buylde this house, and to lay the foundations of these walles?

4 En ze vroegen hun nog: Hoe heten de mannen, die deze bouw zijn begonnen?

Then sayde we vnto them after this maner, What are the names of the men that buylde this buylding?

5 Maar het oog van hun God rustte op de oudsten der Joden; men dwong ze niet, de werkzaamheden te staken, voordat er een beslissing van Darius zou zijn afgekomen. Daarom zouden zij over deze aangelegenheid een schrijven verzenden.

But the eye of their God was vpon the Elders of the Iewes, that they coulde not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they answered by letters thereunto.

6 (Tekst van de brief, die Tattenai, de stadhouder van het gebied aan de overzijde van de Rivier, en Sjetar-Bozenai met hun ambtsgenoten, de generaals van de overzijde der Rivier, aan koning Darius hebben gezonden).

The copie of the letter, that Tatnai captaine beyond the Riuer, and Shether-boznai and his companions, Apharsechaie, (which were beyond the Riuer) sent vnto King Darius.

7 Zij zonden hem een verslag van de volgende inhoud: Aan koning Darius, alle heil!

They sent a letter vnto him, wherein it was written thus, VNTO DARIVS the king, all peace.

8 Het zij den koning bekend, dat wij ons naar de landstreek Juda hebben begeven, naar de tempel van den groten God. Deze wordt opgebouwd met steenblokken, en de wanden worden met hout bekleed; het werk wordt met zorg uitgevoerd, en vordert onder hun hand.

Be it knowen vnto the King, that we went into the prouince of Iudea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and beames are layde in the walles, and this worke is wrought speedily, and prospereth in their hands.

9 Wij hebben toen de oudsten daar ondervraagd, en hun gezegd: Wie heeft u verlof gegeven, dit huis te bouwen en deze muren te herstellen?

Then asked we those Elders, and sayd vnto them thus, Who hath giuen you commandement to buylde this house, and to lay the foundation of these walles?

10 Wij hebben hen ook naar hun namen gevraagd, om u op de hoogte te brengen, en u schriftelijk de namen der mannen op te geven, die aan hun hoofd staan.

We asked their names also, that we might certifie thee, and that we might write the names of the men that were their rulers.

11 Zij hebben ons het volgende geantwoord: Wij zijn de dienaren van den God van hemel en aarde, en wij herbouwen het huis, dat vele jaren geleden gebouwd werd, en door een groot koning van Israël werd opgetrokken en voltooid.

But they answered vs thus, and sayd, We are the seruants of the God of heauen and earth, and buylde the house that was buylt of olde and many yeeres ago, which a great King of Israel builded, and founded it.

12 Maar omdat onze vaderen den God des hemels hadden vertoornd, heeft Hij hen aan den Chaldeër Nabukodonosor, den koning van Babel, overgeleverd, en deze heeft deze tempel verwoest en het volk naar Babel weggevoerd.

But after that our fathers had prouoked the God of heauen vnto wrath, he gaue them ouer into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar King of Babel the Caldean, and he destroyed this house, and caryed the people away captiue vnto Babel.

13 Maar in het eerste jaar van Cyrus, den koning van Babel, heeft koning Cyrus een bevel uitgevaardigd, om dit huis weer op te bouwen.

But in the first yere of Cyrus King of Babel, King Cyrus made a decree to buylde this house of God.

14 Bovendien heeft koning Cyrus de gouden en zilveren vaten van het Godshuis, welke Nabukodonosor uit de tempel van Jerusalem had weggenomen en naar de tempel van Babel had overgebracht, uit de tempel van Babel laten halen en aan Sjesjbassar overhandigen, dien hij tot stadhouder had aangesteld.

And the vessels of golde and siluer of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar tooke out of the Temple, that was in Ierusalem, and brought them into the Temple of Babel, those did Cyrus the king take out of the Temple of Babel, and they gaue them vnto one Sheshbazzar by his name, whome he had made captaine.

15 Hij zeide hem: Neem deze vaten, ga ze terugbrengen naar de tempel van Jerusalem, en laat het huis van God op zijn vroegere plaats herbouwen.

And he sayde vnto him, Take these vessels and goe thy way, and put them in the Temple that is in Ierusalem, and let the house of God be buylt in his place.

16 Toen is Sjesjbassar hierheen gekomen, heeft de grondslagen van Jerusalems tempel gelegd, en van die tijd af is er tot nu toe aan gebouwd, zonder dat hij werd voltooid.

Then came the same Sheshbazzar and layde the foundation of the house of God, which is in Ierusalem, and since that time euen vntill nowe, hath it bene in buylding, yet is it not finished.

17 Indien de koning het goedvindt, laat men dan een onderzoek instellen in het koninklijk archief te Babel, of er inderdaad door koning Cyrus verlof is gegeven, om deze tempel van Jerusalem te herbouwen. Dan moge de koning ons zijn beslissing doen toekomen.

Nowe therefore if it please the King, let there be searche made in the house of the Kings treasures, which is there in Babel, whether a decree hath bene made by King Cyrus, to build this house of God in Ierusalem, and let the King send his minde concerning this.
