Ezechiël 31

1 In het elfde jaar, op de eerste van de derde maand, werd het woord van Jahweh tot mij gericht.

And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first [day] of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

2 Mensenkind, ge moet tot Farao en tot zijn drommen zeggen: Aan wie waart ge in uw grootheid gelijk?

Son of man, say to Pharao king of Egypt, and to his multitude; To whom have you compared yourself in your haughtiness?

3 Zie, Ik maakte u tot een Libanon-ceder, Met mooie takken, schaduwrijk loof en rijzige stam; Tussen de wolken reikte zijn kruin.

Behold, the Assyrian was a cypress in Libanus, and was fair in shoots, and high in stature: his top reached to the midst of the clouds.

4 Water deed hem gedijen, De oceaan liet hem groeien; Die liet zijn stromen vloeien over zijn wortels, Liet zijn kanalen lopen over het hele veld.

The water nourished him, the depth made him grow tall; she led her rivers round about his plants, and she sent forth her streams to all the trees of the field.

5 Daarom rees zijn stam Boven alle bomen des velds, Kreeg hij veel takken, lange twijgen: Van het vele water in zijn scheuten.

Therefore was his stature exalted above all the trees of the field, and his branches spread far by the help of much water.

6 In zijn takken nestelden alle vogels uit de lucht, Onder zijn twijgen wierpen alle wilde dieren haar jongen; En in zijn schaduw zetten Allerlei talrijke volken zich neer.

All the birds of the sky made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches all the wild beasts of the field bred; the whole multitude of nations lived under his shadow.

7 Hij was een prachtige boom om zijn hoogte, En door de lengte van zijn takken; Want zijn wortels stonden Aan overvloedige wateren.

And he was fair in his height by reason of the multitude of his branches: for his roots were amidst much water.

8 De ceders in Gods tuin evenaarden hem niet, Cypressen konden niet op tegen zijn twijgen; Geen plataan had zulke takken als hij, Geen boom in Gods tuin bereikte zijn pracht!

And such cypresses [as this] were in the paradise of God; and there were no pines like his shoots, and there were no firs like his branches: no tree in the paradise of God was like him in his beauty,

9 Ik had hem heerlijk gemaakt, Met zijn talloze takken; Hij werd door alle bomen van Eden benijd, Die in Gods tuin staan.

because of the multitude of his branches: and the trees of God's paradise of delight envied him.

10 Daarom zegt Jahweh, de Heer: Omdat hij groot ging op zijn stam, Omdat hij zijn kruin tussen de wolken stak, En hij trots werd op zijn lengte:

Therefore thus says the Lord; Because you are grown great, and have set your top in the midst of the clouds, and I saw when he was exalted;

11 Daarom geef Ik hem in de macht Van een geweldige onder de volken; Die zal de hand aan hem slaan; Ik ruk hem uit om zijn boosheid.

therefore I delivered him into the hands of the prince of the nations, and he wrought his destruction.

12 Vreemde, barbaarse volken houwen hem om, En smakken hem neer op de bergen; In alle dalen vallen zijn takken, Zijn geknakte twijgen in alle kloven der aarde. Alle volken der aarde vluchten weg uit zijn schaduw, En smijten hem weg;

And ravaging strangers from the nations have destroyed him, and have cast him down upon the mountains: his branches fell in all the valleys, and his boughs were broken in every field of the land; and all the people of the nations are gone down from their shelter, and have laid him low.

13 Op zijn gevelde stam laten allerlei vogels uit de lucht zich neer, Allerlei wilde dieren zitten op zijn twijgen.

All the birds of the sky have settled on his fallen trunk, and all the wild beasts of the field came upon his boughs:

14 Zo gaat geen rijkbevloeide boom meer groot op zijn stam, Steekt zijn kroon niet meer tussen de wolken; En geen zal er zich meer op zijn grootheid verheffen, Van alles wat water opzuigt. Want ze zijn allen bestemd voor de dood, Voor de diepten der aarde; Temidden van de kinderen der mensen, Die al in het graf zijn gedaald.

in order that none of the trees by the water should exalt themselves by reason of their size: whereas they set their top in the midst of the clouds, yet they continued not in their high state in their place, all that drank water, all were consigned to death, to the depth of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.

15 Dit zegt Jahweh, de Heer: Op de dag dat hij naar de onderwereld afdaalde, Liet Ik de oceaan in rouwkleed om hem treuren, Heb Ik zijn oevers verstopt, En het overvloedige water hield op. Ik hulde om hem de Libanon in rouw, En alle bomen van het veld verlepten; (Sheol h7585)

Thus says the Lord God; In the day wherein he went down to Hades, the deep mourned for him: and I stayed her floods, and restrained her abundance of water: and Libanus saddened for him, all the trees of the field fainted for him. (Sheol h7585)

16 Door de dreun van zijn val heb Ik volken verschrikt, Toen Ik hem de diepte instiet, bij hen die in het graf zijn gedaald. Nu troosten zich in de diepte der aarde Alle bomen van Eden, Het puik en de keur van de Libanon, Alles wat water opzuigt. (Sheol h7585)

At the sound of his fall the nations quaked, when I brought him down to Hades with them that go down to the pit: and all the trees of Delight comforted him in the heart, and the choice of [plants] of Libanus, all that drink water. (Sheol h7585)

17 Ook zij moesten met hem mee, het dodenrijk in, Naar hen, die door het zwaard zijn getroffen: Naar zijn bondgenoten, die in zijn schaduw zaten Te midden der volken. (Sheol h7585)

For they went down to hell with him amongst the slain with the sword; and his seed, [even] they that lived under his shadow, perished in the midst of their life. (Sheol h7585)

18 Op wien gelijkt ge nu nog in pracht En in grootheid onder de bomen van Eden? Gij zijt neergesmakt met de bomen van Eden, In de diepten der aarde. Tussen onbesnedenen ligt ge nu neer, Bij hen, die door het zwaard zijn getroffen. Zo gaat het Farao met al zijn drommen, Is de godsspraak van Jahweh, den Heer!

To whom are you compared? descend, and be you debased with the trees of paradise to the depth of the earth: you shall lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that are slain by the sword. Thus shall Pharao be, and the multitude of his host, says the Lord God.
